The geologic structure of Gongju Basin, which is a Cretaceous sedimentary basin located on the boundary of Gyeonggi Massif and Ogcheon Belt, is modeled by using gravity data and interpreted in relation with basin forming tectonism. The electrical survey with dipole-dipole array was also conducted to uncover the development of fractures in the two fault zones which form the boundaries of the basin. In the process of gravity data reduction, the terrain correction was performed by using the conic prism model, which showed better results specially for topography having a steep slope. The gravity model of the geologic structure of Gongju basin is obtained by forward modeling based on the surface geology and density inversion. It reveals that the width of the basin at its central part is about $4{\cal}km$ and about $2.5{\cal}km$ at the southern part. The depth of crystalline basement beneath sedimentary rocks of the basin is about $700{\~}400{\cal}m$ below the sea level and it is thinner in the center than in margin. The fault of the southeastern boundary appears more clearly than that of the northwestern boundary, and its fracture zone may extended to the depth of more than $1{\cal}km$. Therefore, it is thought that the tectonic movement along the fault in the southeastern boundary was much stronger. These results coincide with the appearance of broad low resistivity anomaly at the southeastern boundary of the basin in the resistivity section. The fracture zones having low density are also recognized inside the basin from the gravity model. The swelling feature of basement and the fractures in sedimentary rocks of the basin suggest that the compressional tectonic stress had also involved after the deposition of the Cretaceous sediments.

The feeding habits of the Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus were studied using 620 specimens collected by bottom trawl and pound net in the Southeast sea of Korea, from February 2012 to June 2013. Of 620 specimens, 192 contained food and 428 were empty. The total length (TL) of individuals used in this study ranged from 20.4 to 95.2 cm. Pacific cod mainly consumed Pisces, Macrura, and Cephalopoda. Its diet also included small quantities of Anomura, Brachyura, Mysidacea, Isopoda and Amphipoda. The proportion of Pisces in prey items increased with increasing Pacific cod length, but seasonal difference was not observed. The proportion of Macrura and Cephalopoda decreased with growth, and seasonal differences were apparent. Macrura were taken there mainly from autumn to winter, whereas Cephalopoda were consumed from spring to summer.
Volcanic rocks in Jeju Island indicate the differences in geological and mechanical characteristics from region to region, and have vesicular structure caused by various environmental factors. In this study, triaxial compressive strength tests were conducted for intact rocks sampled in northeastern onshore and offshore, southeastern offshore and northwestern offshore of Jeju Island. The estimated cohesion and internal friction angle from the results of triaxial compression tests were compared and analyzed with absorption, a parameter representing the vesicular properties of basalts in Jeju Island. As a result, it was found that the relationship between cohesion and absorption could be classified clearly, considering two different linear relationships in bulk specific gravity and absorption. As the absorption increases, the cohesion decreases exponentially. In addition, the internal friction angle decreases almost linearly with increasing in the absorption, regardless of the relationships in bulk specific gravity and absorption.
This study was carried out to investigate the distribution and characteristics of off-type rice plant in farmer's paddy field. The ratio of the field contaminated by off-type rice was highest in the southwestern area, followed by the southeastern area, the central area in Korea. The occurrence density of off-type rice was higher in the southern area than the central area. The short-grain red rice was the most dominant off-type rice group, followed by extremely late and sterile rice group and long-grain red rice group in Korea. The long-grain red rice group was dominant in Jeonnam and Kyongnam, and the extremely late and sterile rice group was dominant in Jeonbuk, and the short-grain red rice group in the other provinces. The culm length of most off-type rice groups growing in the farmer's paddy fields was longer than the farmer's cultivars, and the long-grain red rice group and the short-grain red rice group were especially longer. The number of spikelets per panicle of the off-type rice groups were generally greater than the farmer's cultlvars, and in particular, the extremely late and sterile rice group and the long-grain normal rice group had more spikelet per panicle. Most of the off-type rice groups were extremely sterile.
Cheju Island formed by Quarternary volcanism provides highly permeable hydrogeological environment. To meet the increasing demand of water in the island, many groundwater wells have been developed. The environmental isotopes(oxygen-18, deuterium, tritium) and chemical analysis of water samples from the eastern part of the island were carried out to ascertain whether groundwater in the eastern part of the island was contaminated by sea water. The result of tritium analysis indicated fast infiltration of meteoric water into underground and rapid mixing process between rain water and groundwater. The results of oxygen-18 and deuterium analysis demonstrated that most of the wells in the eastern part of the island were influenced by sea water intrusion. Chemical analysis of water samples revealed that most groundwater in study area were classified into Na-Cl type and showed high chloride/bicarbonate ratios. Sea water intrusion in the northeastern part of the island has proceeded at least 3 km within the coastaline, and in the south eastern part about 700m.
The nucleotide sequences of six markers, including nuclear ITS, chloroplast matK, rbcL, atpF-H, psbK-I and psbA-trnH, were analyzed for the plants known as Melia toosendan collected in Southwest China; M. azadarach planted in Southeast China, Korea and India; and species related to Sapindaceae in order to clarify the species boundary between M. toosendan and M. azadarach. The result of a phylogenetic analysis using the nuclear ITS and five chloroplast marker sequences determined that the plants known as M. toosendan and M. azadarach are the same species. These two species have been treated as a single species or as two different species depending on the researcher. The result of the present study supports the contention that the two species are the same. In addition, a sister species to M. azadarach registered in various countries with various basionyms is Azadirachta indica, a well-known medicinal plant. It has previously been classified as a member of the genus Melia.
In this study, a series of triaxial compressive strength tests were conducted for basaltic intact rocks sampled in the northeastern onshore and offshore, southeastern offshore and northwestern offshore of Jeju Island. Hoek-Brown constants $m_i$ were estimated from the results of the triaxial compression tests, and the properties of the Hoek-Brown constants $m_i$ were investigated. In addition, the cohesion and internal friction angle, strength parameters of Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, obtained from the results of the triaxial compression tests were compared and analyzed with those estimated from Hoek-Brown failure criterion, respectively. As results, it was found that the Hoek-Brown constant $m_i$ is deeply related to the internal friction angle. As the internal friction grows, the Hoek-Brown constant $m_i$ increases exponentially. The cohesions estimated from the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, on average, are approximately 24% higher than those obtained from the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The internal friction angles estimated from the Hoek-Brown failure criterion are similar to those obtained from the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion.
Regarding the developmental plans for the coastal areas and marine architectures, this study deal with the overall planning of apartment complexes in waterfront areas, focusing upon the analysis of their comfort and convenience factors from the perspective of the potential residence. It also analysis the intra-complex comfort and satisfaction conditions in terms of their floor-by-floor, directional. and location factors. The results of the study are as follows: 1) The order of respondents' preference on directional factor has been found to be: South > Southeast > Southwest > East > others. 2) 67% of the people surveyed on scenery responded that outward view is considered more significant than the directional factor. 3) A comprehensive analysis of floor zone-specific view preference shared that there were only minor differences among quay wall, arc, and river-seashore types. The impact of the characteristics of the marine environments turned out to be a greater point of consideration; showing that the other of floor-preference is: high-level > ultra-high level > middle level > low level.
We studied the mineral composition and mineral distribution pattern of 131 surface sediments collected at the cruise in 2000 and 2007 from Southeastern Yellow Sea, South Sea of Korea and Southern part of Jeju Island. Mineral compositions of surface sediments were determined using the quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. Surface sediments were composed of rock forming minerals (quartz 37.4%, plagioclase 11.7%, alkali feldspar 5.5%, hornblende 3.1%), clay minerals (illite 19.2%, chlorite 4.7%, kaolinite 1.8%) and carbonate minerals (calcite 10.7%, aragonite 3.4%). Distribution of clay minerals is very similar with fine-grained sediments, and especially same as the distribution of HSMD (Hucksan Mudbelt Deposit), SSKMD (South Sea of Korea Mudbelt Deposit) and JJMD (Jeju Mudbelt Deposit). The coarse sediment seemed to be relic sediment during the last glacial maximum and mainly consisted of rock forming minerals. Whereas the fine sediments mainly composed of clay minerals. Based on the clay mineral composition, main ocean current and geographical factor, HSMD and SSKMD might have derived from the rivers around the Korean Peninsula. However, JJMD is complex mudbelt deposit, which formed by Korean rivers and oceanic sediments.
This study is aimed at elucidating the source rocks of the Hayang strata in the northeastern part of the Gyeongsang Basin. Zircon morphology was analyzed for sandstones from the Iljig, Hupyeongdong, and Jeomgog formations of the Hayang Group and Precambrian gneisses and Jurassic granites. Generally, the composite zircon crystals extracted from the basement rocks and the Hayang Group sandstones show short prismatic to middle prismatic shapes. {110)={100) prism type is dominant and (101) pyramid is the average of the zircon morphology data. Zircon index@) and the shape trend characteristics clearly show that the zircon crystal forms of the Iljig and Hupyeongdong sandstones are dominantly similar to those of the biotite banded gneiss and granite gneiss of Precambrian age. Zircon morphology of the Jeomgog sandstones is dominantly similar to those of the Jurassic granites. Referring to the reported paleocurrent result, the source rocks of the Iljig and Hupyeongdong formations are mainly the Precambrian gneisses distributed in the southeastern and northeastern parts, respectively. And Jeomgog sandstones were mainly derived from Cheongsong granite at Cheongsong uplift region in the eastern part. At the time of completion of the Hupyeongdong sedimentation, the Precambrian basement rocks were severely eroded and formed low topography. During the Jeomgog period, the Jurassic granites which intruded the Precambrian basement began to crop out on the surface. The basin widely extended toward the east and the exposed Jurassic granite of Cheongsong uplift region actively supplied the sediments to the basin.
