  • The Korea Port Economics Association was established in 1985 and has been operated for academic research on port economics and research on port logistics. Marking the 35th anniversary of its establishment, it is necessary to establish a new development strategy for academic societies and academic journals. This study analyzed the current status of publication of the Journal of Korea Port Economic Association, from the first issue of 2017 to the December issue of 2019, the utilization and systematic nature of this journal, and the efforts implemented to improve the quality of the journal. The recognition, utilization, and subject inconsistencies were analyzed to determine the academic value of the journal. The findings suggested the journal's academic excellence, as evidenced by its highest ranking by Journal Impact Factor among agro-oceanography journals (among 77 journals) and marine transport journals (among four journals). Further, the direction of development for this academic journal was presented with reference to research characteristics and specialization efforts.

In the case of Busan the regional I-O model shows the port and port related industries account for more than one fifth of regional production, more than one fifth of value added and more than one seventh of employment at least. The port and port related industries are the most important sector in Busan economy as well as other major ports such as Rotterdam and Singapore. The impact estimation of port and port related industries is compared by the previously held survey study. The compilation of regional I-O table makes more diverse analysis on regional economic variables available and a few sample cases are reported in this paper.

However, there have been no research that classified and organized the results comprehensively. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the results of studies related to Korean port economics. For the purpose, we carried out a meta-analysis targeting 659 articles published in Journal of Korea Port Economic Association from 1991 to 2010. For the meta-analysis on themes of port economics and methods, the study presented a total of three items to be analysed: First, we analysed characteristics of researchers, discussed themes and identified contents by analysing research methods used for the studies. As a result, port economics have shown great growth in volume and recently, more attentions have been paid to ports along with increase of researchers, and themes and methods of research have been sub-categorized and diversified. Therefore, based on the results of the study, comparative studies should be added.

  • Korea has achieved a remarkable growth by pursuing externally-oriented growth policy since 1960s. That is, we imported raw materials and spare parts, manufactured them into products and exported them, which led to successful economic development. Therefore, our marine business has played an important roles as one of key industries. The development of marine business has contributed to efficient distribution and cost reduction in addition to production of added value and creation of employment creation, which improved external competitive power. In spite of economic importance of marine business, national perception on it is in general low and its developmental conditions are considerably poor. Therefore, this study aims to speculate the effect of Port-related business on regional economy using regional input-output tables.

  • In accordance with the environmental changes that surrounds the port, there seems to be a trend of increasing interest in a sustainable development and operation of port. Considering that sustainability assessment utilizing Triple Bottome Line(TBL) has been conducted actively in various fields of research, it is essential to evaluate port sustainability including not only economic aspect but also social as well as environmental ones. In this regard, this study aims to measure the relative importance of port sustainability index using AHP. Moreover, sustainability of Korean four major ports has been tested by adopting the newly developed index in this study. From the results, it can be concluded that in addition to securing high value cargoes, increasing efficiency of port operation and infrastructure together with capital investment are essential. Growth harmonized with surrounding area of port and environment-friendly port operation should not be disregarded.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate and forecast the marine trading volumes based on the structural model. We employ GPH cointegration test since the structural model must be stationary to get the accurate predicted values. The empirical results show that our model is stationary. This paper also applies variance decompositions and impulse-response functions to the structural model composed of exchange rate, domestic industrial activity, and world business. The results indicate that while both loading and unloading volumes respond positively to the shocks in income and then decay very slowly, their responses are different to the shocks in exchange tate.
