Satisfaction with major and view of profession among dental hygiene students (치위생 전공 대학생의 전공만족도와 전문직관 연구)

  • 치위생과 학생의 전공만족도는 인식만족이 가장 높았으며, 교과만족이 가장 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 전공만족도는 3.51점으로 나타났으며, 성적이 높은 학생일수록, 종합병원 및 대학병원에 취업을 원하는 학생일수록 전공만족도가 높은 것으로 나타났다(p<0.01, p<0.05). 치위생과 학생의 전문직관은 치위생의 독자성이 가장 높았으며, 사회적 인식이 가장 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 전문직관은 3.48점으로 나타났으며, 성적이 높은 학생일수록 전문직관이 높은 것으로 나타났다(p<0.05). 전공만족도와 전문직관의 관계는 전공만족도가 높을수록 전문직관이 높은 것으로 나타났다(p<0.001). 결론적으로 치위생과 학생들의 긍정적인 전문직관의 확립을 위해 전공만족도를 높일 수 있도록 학생들의 학업성취도 향상과 졸업 후 취업에 대한 비젼을 제시할 수 있는 다양한 노력이 필요하다고 사료된다.

The Professionalization of American Dental Hygienist (미국치과위생사의 전문직화에 대한 고찰)

  • In 2013, dental hygienist is in its 100th year. As Dr. Fones opened two year dental hygiene training program at Bridgeport Junior College in 1913. 'Dental Hygienist', the profession that specializes in oral disease prevention and health science, was first used. Since 'Dental Hygienist' was first introduced in the States, looking back through the America's development of dental hygienist would be the basis of checking development process of the international dental hygiene system and comparing the system of each country. This study focused on the contemplation of how America's dental hygienist became professional through 'development of dental hygienist', 'development of dental hygiene education system', 'development of dental hygienist's license and related qualification system', 'Dental hygienist laws and ethics', and 'dental hygienists' role and scope'. America's dental hygienist has requirements to become professional and also dental hygienist is socially recognized as professional. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the process of American dental hygienist professionalization. Thus, references and literature were gathered and analyzed.

Survey on the working environment of national clinical dental hygienists (전국 임상치과위생사의 근무환경 실태조사)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the regional distribution and working environment of clinical dental hygienists in Korea. Methods: From 2015 to October 2016, a questionnaire was completed by 5,708 participants and the data were analyzed. Results: The region with the largest increase in clinical dental hygienist employees compared to graduates is Seoul. More than 50.0% of clinical dental hygienists working for less than 1.8 million won in the payroll period of 4-6 years were working in the Gwangju Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, and Gangwon regions. In addition, incentives and bonuses were rarely provided by localities and agencies. Although 43.4% provided both parental leave and maternity leave. Conclusions: In order to solve the fundamental problem of inter-regional movement and employee turnover rate of clinical dental hygienists, as well as address the regional imbalance in labor supply and demand, efforts should be made for institutional improvement to strengthen management and implementation.

Influencing factors on turnover intention in clinical dental hygienist (일부 임상치과위생사의 이직의도 영향요인)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to provide a reference material for improving the work environment to reduce the turnover intention of clinical dental hygienists in the future by identifying the problem of the turnover phenomenon of clinical dental hygienists in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Methods: The method of this study used the raw data of 'A Survey on the Current Work Environment of Clinical Dental Hygienists' from August 29 to September 28, 2017, and 2,974 clinical dental hygienists in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do were finally selected as the study subjects. Results: The results showed that excessive workload, inadequate pay, and hierarchical organizational culture of a workplace were the main factors influencing the turnover intention of clinical dental hygienists, and the lack of welfare system, low wage and practical experience also affected their turnover intention. Conclusions: In order to reduce the turnover intention of clinical dental hygienists, it is important to create a working atmosphere where the members of an organization can freely share and communicate suggestions and improvements, and to pay their salary appropriate to the duties and roles of dental hygienists, and accordingly they will be able to carry out the duties with responsibility for a long time without moving to another organization.

Relative competitiveness of department of dental hygiene and the effectiveness of admission promotion using the YouTube platform (국내 치위생(학)과의 경쟁력과 유튜브 플랫폼을 이용한 학과홍보의 효용성)

  • Objectives: As the school-age population continues to decline in Korea, the consolidation and abolition of departments continues with the economic logic. This study aimed to analyze the relative competitiveness of the department of dental hygiene and to investigate the effectiveness of the YouTube platform being used to promote admission. Methods: Using the admission result data provided by the Korea council for university education, the new student competition rate and recruitment rate of the department of dental hygiene were compared with those of the departments of natural sciences and all other departments. Also, the effect of YouTube channel operation on them was analyzed. Results: The department of dental hygiene showed a slight advantage but it was not particularly the case compared to other departments of natural sciences. The promotion using YouTube did not have any significant effects. Conclusions: Considering that the school-age population will rapidly decrease in the future, more active strategies are needed.

The Convergence Effect of Major Satisfaction, Resilience on Clinical Practice Satisfaction of Dental Hygiene Students (치위생(학)과 학생의 전공만족도, 회복탄력성이 임상실습만족도에 미치는 융합적 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the degree of major satisfaction, resilience and clinical practice satisfaction of dental hygiene students, and to find out factors affecting clinical practice satisfaction. A survey was conducted for students from the dental hygiene department with clinical practice experience, and a total of 256 questionnaires were finally analyzed. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis were performed according to the purpose of the study. As a result of the study, it was found that relational of major satisfaction had a significant positive effect on the variables affecting clinical practice satisfaction. Based on these results, in order to improve clinical practice satisfaction, it is important to increase relationship satisfaction as a sub-factor of major satisfaction.

Analysis of dental hygiene instructions based on the importance and satisfaction of dental hygiene students (치위생과 학생이 인식하는 좋은 수업에 대한 중요도와 만족도 차이분석)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to suggest an effective instruction method for dental hygiene students by determining the degree of importance and satisfaction that they attach to the courses. Methods: Data obtained from a survey that was conducted on 654 dental hygiene students were analyzed. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 23.0 was used for the statistical analysis. A paired t-test was conducted to detect the differences between the degree of importance that the respondents attached to the courses and the degree of satisfaction they achieved. A comparative analysis of the two was performed using the IPA analysis. Results: Regarding the items, the respondents found the environment most important, followed by the content, method, perspective, and assessment. Regarding satisfaction, they were most satisfied with the environment, followed by the perspective, method, content, and assessment. Regarding the importance of ideal teaching, the respondents gave the highest priority to 'a class in which the core content is summarized, emphasized, and explained.' The satisfaction was the highest toward 'PowerPoint-based classes in which the core content is well-organized.' Based on the results of the IPA analysis, the respondents regarded 16 items as requiring maintenance and continuous efforts, 12 items as low priority, and 4 items as requiring excessive efforts and timely improvement. Conclusions: An ideal class requires the instructor to utilize various teaching methods that would enable the students to comprehend the detailed teaching content and elicit active interaction and feedback from the students through easy-to-understand lectures that are appropriate for students.

Factors influencing positive psychological capital of dental hygiene students (치위생과 학생의 긍정심리자본에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to explore ways to improve the level of positive psychological capital of dental hygiene students. After comparing the levels of positive psychological capital, social support, and emotional regulation ability of dental hygiene students and identifying correlations, the sub-factors of social support and emotional regulation ability that affect positive psychological capital were identified. Methods: A survey of 70 questions was conducted targeting 310 dental hygiene students in Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do. The results were subjected to exploratory factor analysis, frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis using the PASW statistics 18.0 program. Results: The level of positive psychological capital was high when students had high grades and perceived positive relationships with professors and peers (p<0.001). Factors highly correlated with positive psychological capital include 'self-emotional regulation ability' among 'emotion regulation abilities' (r=0.665, p<0.001), and 'emotional support related to daily life' recognized 'social support' (r=0.635, p<0.001), followed by 'social support' (r=0.602, p<0.001). Factors affecting positive psychological capital include 'self-emotion recognized ability' (β=0.377, p<0.001), 'quality of professor relationship' (β=0.201, p<0.001), and 'emotion control ability'. Among 'social support', 'emotional support related to daily life' (β=0.201, p=0.003) and 'grades' (β=0.159, p<0.001), and among 'social support', 'social-related support' (β=0.149, p=0.016), followed by 'grade' (β=0.076, p=0.043) were identified. Conclusions: To improve the positive psychological capital of dental hygiene students, efforts should be made to improve self-emotion regulation ability, professor relationships, emotional support related to daily life, and social support.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the ideas of dental hygiene education programs between Korea and America. The America dental hygiene education program aimed at development capacity such as comprehensive dental hygiene care, critical thinking and problem solving, self-assessment skill to prepare for and engage in life-long learning, effective interpersonal and communication skill which evidence-based approach to dental hygiene process.
