Among the weather conditions on the Korean Peninsula, Changma is a notable phenomenon. This is because substantial amount of the precipitation on the Korean Peninsula tends to happen during the Changma season. But there are times when this tendency falls into whims. That's the case when it doesn't rain or rains only little during the Changma season. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) describes this phenomenon as 'Dry Changma' - meaning . However, 'Dry Changma' is often regarded as an instance of contradicto in adjecto. Since the general public believe that 'Changma' means . This confusion often leads to distrust in meteorologists. In this paper, we would like to propose a reasonable solution to this conundrum by employing the conceptual resources of contemporary philosophy. First of all, I will make explicit the meaning of 'Changma' that the public and meteorologists think of. And then a brief explanation of the concept of natural kinds will be presented and the argument will be made that Changma is a natural kind. Next, we will discuss a view on natural kind terms advanced by Saul Kripke, a renowned philosopher. We will argue that in Kripke's view, the general public's thought that 'Dry Changma' is contradicto in adjecto is not correct. This will eventually lead to the conclusion that the meteorologist usage of 'Changma' is the correct one, which is thereby to be adopted by the public.

지난 3월 초 한국과학기술기획평가원(KISTEP) 제4대 원장에 조영화 박사가 취임했다. 국가과학기술기획과 주요 과학기술정책 수립, 범부처 연구개발 사업의 조사.분석.평가 등을 전담하는 기관인 KISTEP의 조 신임 원장을 만나 평소의 철학과 정책구상에 대해 들어봤다. 조 신임 원장은 성균관대 졸업후 충북대에서 박사학위를 취득했으며 한국과학기술정보연구원(KISTI) 1, 2대 원장 등을 역임했다.

과학기술분류는 연구자들의 연구활동을 담는 그릇이다. 과학기술자들이 다양한 분야에서 각기 다른 연구활동을 수행할 때 과학기술분류는 이들의 연구활동을 나누고 묶는 기준이된다. 이 연구는 한국과학재단에서 1999년부터 사용하고 있는 새로운 과학기술 분류체계의 속성과 구조에 관한 것이다. 새로운 분류체계는 분야를 복수로 기재하도록 함으로써 복합(interdisciplinary) 분야의 표현이 가능하도록 하였고 연구분야와 적용분야를 동시에 기재하도록 함으로써 과학기술정책과 산업정책이 연결될수 있는 체계를 갖도록 하였다.

최근 우수한 안전관리로 유명한 주요 건설사들이 각자의 안전역량을 겨루는 자리가 마련돼 화제가 됐다. 그것은 바로 한국도로공사가 개최한 '제1회 전국 건설안전 경진대회'였다. 이 자리에는 대우건설, 현대산업개발, 대림산업, 포스코건설, GS건설, 한화건설 등 내로라하는 건설사들이 대거 참여해 자사가 자랑하는 안전관리기법과 기술을 소개했다. 우열을 가리기 힘든 치열한 경합 끝에 대회 최우수상인 고용노동부 장관상의 영예는 대우건설 동홍천~양양간 고속도로 14공구 현장이 차지했다. 본지는 이곳 현장의 안전관리를 이끌고 있는 박성환 안전팀장을 만나 그만의 안전철학과 안전관리 비법 등에 대해 이야기를 나누어봤다.

정물화는 회화에서부터 긴 역사를 두고 변천해 왔다. 17세기 네덜란드에서 성행하기 시작한 정물화는 일상적인 생활에서 만나는 사물을 회화적으로 재구성한 결과물이다. 눈에 보이는 사물을 그대로 그려 낼 수 있는 화가의 기량을 평가하는 기준으로 제시되었으며 인간의 생활상과 작가의 심상을 표현하는 하나의 장르로 자리잡았다. 또한 정물은 시대의 변화에 따라 그 소재가 다양해지면서 무한히 변화되었다. 특히, 현대사진에서의 정물사진은 대상이나 의미에 따라 그 시대의 일상적인 삶과 연관된 소재들이 다양해지면서 단순히 재현에만 머무르는 것이 아니라 사회를 반영하고 미학, 철학과 함께 구조적으로 변화됐다.

The standards of valuation for technology and business are announced on December of 2000, by a Committee for the Standards of Valuation for Technology and Business led by the author. This is a first effort to set up a social standards of valuation in Korea. Hence, this paper will chase the background philosophy and structure of the standards, and its relationship with international and american standards. The standards of valuation is a product of social agreement, not a bundle of knowledge of professional experts.

This article is a reflective study on the 'modern' and 'modernity' in 'Modern Buddhism of Korea' research discourse. First, we raise the issue on how to define and describe the 'modern' in the recent 'Modern Buddhism of Korea' research. We raise some questions about whether there is the concept of "modernity" properly explained and agreed in Buddhist academia of Korea. And we will try to propose its solution. Next, we will briefly review the characteristics of 'modern' and 'modernity' in the flow of history of the West, which have never been discussed in the research discourse of "Modern Buddhist studies of Korea.' We will raise questions about whether it is possible to find a 'modernity' in itself what it is, and is further expected really 'modern' or 'modernity' in Korean conditions on the basis of this review. Finally, this article seeks to reveal what premises must be kept in mind in the 'Modern Buddhist studies of Korea', by critically reviewing researches of "Modern Buddhist studies of Korea".

Widespread recognition of the various aspects of science education has been prompted by post-positivist philosophers' discussions of the nature of science and intense debates among constructivist psychologists about learning in science. Their discussions and debates, in turn, have raised the problems associated with teaching/learning of science in the schools. The purpose of this article, basically based on the reviews and analyses of the literature related to philosophy of science and psychology, was to describe the implications of post-positivism and constructivism for current science education in the schools. In this paper, the author defines science education as education of/about science, and education through/by science. He also stresses that scientific literacy and decision-making should be emphasized as the goals of science education, that the ethical dimensions of science and technology must be included in science curriculum, that group discussion and/or cooperative learning are effective teaching strategy for science as interpreted by post-positivists and constructivists, and that the assessment should be focused on the degree to which cognitive structure has been changed through instruction in the school classrooms.
