  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of social support, abuse on the ego-integrity in the elderly. Method: This is a descriptive survey study. Data were collected from March to June, 2008 with 306 older adults living at home. The questionnaires consisted of social support, abuse, and ego-integrity. Result: The average score of the subjects for social support was 4.5, for abuse 1.16, and for ego-integrity 2.91. There were positive correlations between social support and ego-integrity. The negative correlations were shown between social support and abuse, as well as between ego-integrity and abuse. The correlations were statistically significant. The social support and abuse were a significant predictor of ego-integrity. Conclusion: A program for improving social support and preventing abuse should be developed. In addition nursing intervention should be provided based on the developed program for this population.

  • Objectives: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important outcome for middle school students. This study was designed to illustrate the effect of social support and class cohesiveness associated on HRQoL. Methods: The subjects comprised 516 students from three middle schools in Daegu, South Korea that responded to a self-administered questionnaire in February 2014. The purposes of the questionnaire were explained to the subjects. Results: The total mean of HRQoL was $81.1{\pm}15.3$. Social functioning showed the highest score of $87.1{\pm}15.3$ and emotional functioning showed the lowest score of $73.8{\pm}21.5$. Teacher support (B=3.185, p=0.001) had a significant effect on the physical health summary scores. Class cohesiveness (B=2.237, p=0.022), friendships (B=5.102, p<0.001) and teacher support (B=2.498, p=0.006) had a significant effect on the psychosocial health summary scores. Finally, class cohesiveness (B=2.137, p=0.016), friendships (B=4.133, p<0.001) and teacher support (B=2.670, p=0.001) had a significant effect on the overall scores. Conclusion: The results of this study provide a basis for the development of strategies to improve health-related quality of life for middle school students, namely that relevant programs should be based on the improvement of social support and class cohesiveness.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to compare depression and social support according to general characteristics and to investigate the influence of social support on depression. Methods: This study analyzed raw data from a project funded by Jeju Province. Data were collected through home visit interview with 750 households selected by using a randomized cluster sampling method. CES-D was used to measure depression, and the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey was used to measure social support. The data of 1,155 subjects were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and regression. Results: The mean was 11.35 for depression and 75.53 for social support. Women showed a higher depression score and a lower social support score than men did. Older people; the divorced or the bereaved; and those in groups comprising people with lower education, lower social class, poor health, or high stress presented higher depression and lower social support. The result of stepwise regression showed that social support was one of the predictive variables of depression, and 22% of variance was explained by social support in this study. Conclusions: Social support was a powerful predictive variable of depression, and it was suggested that to prevent and manage depression, strategies that enhance social support should be developed and evaluated.

  • This study investigates the relationship between the social supports & the transformational leadership from career mentors and high school students' GRIT & career preparation behavior. The purpose of this study was to provide baseline data for Development of Career-program so that they can provide effective career advice to students, through analyzing preceding researches that highlight the impact from career mentors on students' GRIT and career preparation behavior. For this study, the questionnaires for students' GRIT & career preparation behavior were completed by 257 sophomore high school students participating in the career mentor program. also, This data was analyzed to find student's perception of social supports and transformational leadership from career mentors. Correlation analysis was used to investigate the relationship among four variable(GRIT, career preparation behavior, career mentor's social supports, career mentor's transformational leadership) and regression analysis was used to find the influence from the career mentor's social supports and career mentor's transformational leadership on student's GRIT & career preparation behavior. The result showed the change of students' GRIT & career preparation behavior have risen on average. Also, it showed the change of students' career preparation behavior is influenced by career mentor's emotional support, informational support and individualized consideration. Lastly, the change of students' GRIT is influenced by career mentor's emotional support, appraisal support and individualized consideration. This result was able to identify the relationship and influence of career mentor who were limited to social support by their parents and teachers. And, it suggests that the appropriate social supports need to be provided to students by understanding the type of social supports that meet student's expectations.

  • Due to the increasing concerns with the North Korean defectors, the researches have been increased.. However when compared with other areas, the researches about the North Korean defectors are rare. The sample size of this study is 171, which makes it possible to do statistical inferences. This study examines the adjustment stress and the effect of social support on the adaptation. As a demographic factors, gender, age and education are controlled. The context factors-the period of the stay in the third place, the period of residence and the existence of the education in Korea- are used as control variables. The research results show that the jobless is an important stressor. The structural social support affects the adjustment of stress as a whole and not individually. Among functional social support, the emotional social support is an important factor of adaptation, but the effect of structural social support is the opposite. Therefore, the adequacy of social support must be considered.

  • The Purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the leasure activity and social support of the elderly people on their psychological well-being and the moderating role of social support. For this study, data were collected from 347 old people participating in the leasure activity programs operated by 10 facilities for the aged in Seoul, using structured questionnaires. Hierarchical regression analysis technique was used as a main data analysis method for hypothesis test. This study found that productive leasure activity had a beneficial effect on psychological well-being of the elderly measured in terms of life satisfaction and loneliness, whereas consumptive leasure activity had a positive effect only on life satisfaction; that, with regard to social support, spouse support had the most important effect on life satisfaction, followed by friend support and children support, whereas friend support had the most important effect on loneliness, followed by spouse support; and that the relationship between productive leasure activity and life satisfaction was moderated by spouse support and friend support, whereas the relationship between productive leasure activity and loneliness was moderated by friend support.

  • In Korea, none of the design methods, which can consider the properties of hard soil, weathered rock and the condition of construction, are suggested. Therefore, the properties of geomaterial are simply classified into three categories such as sand, clay and rock for the resistance estimation of axially loaded drilled shafts in Korea. However, in America, O'Neill et al.(1996) presented design methods for a new category of geomaterial which is between soil and rock termed "intermediate geomaterials, IGM's". And FHWA(1999) adapted above most complete classification of geomaterials in its design manual. However, in Korea, these properties are depended on the engineer's judgement, the weathered rocks may be counted as soils, although they may be referred to as IGM's in America. In this study, the applicability of IGM method was investigated through the three construction sites in Korea. For the comparison, two geomaterial properties are applied, respectively. The one was sound soil condition and the other was IGM condition and classical design method and IGM method were applied, respectively. The results showed that the predicted bearing capacities of drilled shafts with IGM's were larger than the predicted values by the classical design method with sound soil condition.
