Hegemonic Masculinity in Disney Animated Films (디즈니 애니메이션에 나타난 헤게모니적 남성성)

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore the hegemonic masculinity in Disney animated feature films in terms of Antonio Gramsci's hegemony and R. W. Connell's hegemonic masculinity. According to Gramsci, hegemony refers to the predominance of a dominant group over other groups. By the same token, Connell uses the term hegemony as the configuration of gender practice which embodies the domination of men and the subordination of women. He describes four masculinities to explore male hierarchy in male groups: hegemonic masculinity, subordinated masculinity, complicit masculinity, and marginalized masculinity. Through Connell's terms, this study investigates masculinities in Disney films, especially Beauty and the Beast (1991) in relation to hegemonic masculinity. As a result, Disney describes repeatedly hegemonic masculinity as hard body defined by Susan Jeffords and supports tacitly the domination of a specific male group.

Male Gender Role and Adjustment of Korean Men (남성 성역할이 우리나라 남성들의 적응에 미치는 영향)

  • The goal of this study was to examine the effects of male gender role on the adjustment of Korean men. In study 1 Korean Male gender Role Scale was developed. A 52-item scale was constructed based on the responses of 432 college-aged and middle-aged men to theoretically-derived preliminary items. Five factors were extracted: achievement orientation, the initiative, task orientation, responsibility for family and friendship with male friends. Study 2 examined the relationship between male gender role and several adjustment variables. Correlational analyses indicated that in the college men self-esteem and career identity were positively correlated with the initiative and friendship with male friends was positively correlated with life satisfaction. College men's depression level was negatively correlated with the initiative and task orientation. Among the middle-aged men, self-esteem was also positively correlated with the initiative and task orientation. But responsibility for family was positively correlated with depression and job dissatisfaction in the middle-aged men. In both groups satisfaction with male gender role was positively correlated with self-esteem and life satisfaction but negatively correlated with depression. Finally, limitations of this study and direction of future research were discussed.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of masculineness reproduced in Korean cop films and their deep meaning, mainly in the 2010s. This analysis work will be a work that embodies the masculine ideal type and true masculinity recognized in Korean society. Also, through this, we will be able to approach the ideals and operations of Korean society. As a result, Korean cop films are mysteriously obsessed with masculinity and masculinity behavior through the main character in the film, which shows off masculinity with mental and physical superiority. Korean cop films also show a desire for patriarchal normality through an ending that shows the moment of masculine recovery through the physical victory of a rough and strong man. And the Korean cop film includes the claim that the implementation of social justice requires the existence of masculineness, which is essential, and that the implementation of social justice must be sacrificed to some extent.

What is the masculinity of Korean men? Concept mapping of masculinity (한국 남성의 남자다움은 무엇인가?: 남성성에 대한 개념도 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that constitute masculine norms of masculine in Korean society. The definition of masculinity was to conform to the male-dominated standard formed socially and culturally. The results of in-depth interviews with 20 male participants were used for a concept mapping analysis to explore the configural representations of Korean masculine norms. After extracting the key sentences related to masculine norms, the participants sorted the 55 key sentences based on similarities and assessed the importance, which was then analyzed with multidimensional scaling method and cluster analysis. The result showed two dimensions, one representing social-personal domain and the other implying dominance-support domain as well as six clusters of caregiver, leadership, emotion suppression, job ability and organizational social adaptation, Expects the masculine abilities, power and control. Finally, the implications of this study, limitations, and the suggestions for future research were discussed.

  • 남성도 갱년기를 겪는다. 중년 여성의 전유물로 여겨졌던 갱년기가 남성에게도 나타나는 것이다. 40세 이후 남성의 신체기능 저하는 최근까지 자연적인 노화현상으로 치부됐다. 그러나 평균수명의 연장과 의학의 발달 등으로 건강한 노년 생활에 대한 욕구가 커지면서 남성의 갱년기 증상이 발견되기 시작했다. 특히 20대에 최고조로 증가하는 남성 호르몬(테스토스테론)이 점차 줄어들다가 40~55세 사이에 급격히 감소하면서 여러 가지 신체적, 정신적, 심리적 변화가 나타난다. 남성호르몬 감소의 첫 번째 징후는 부부관계에 관심이 없어지고, 좀 더 진행되면 만성피로를 느끼고 얼굴이 달아오르거나 식은 땀을 흘리며 손발이 저리기도 하다. 그리고 감정이 잘 조절되지 않아 사소한 일에도 짜증을 내게 되는데, 남성 호르몬 부족 때문에 나타나는 이러한 증상들을‘남성 갱년기’라 한다. 이번 호에서는 서울아산병원 비뇨기과 안태영 교수와 성의학클리닉 연구소 강동우 전문의의 도움으로 남성 갱년기에 관해 자세히 알아본다.

Alteration of masculinity Types Shown in Melodramas -From 1992 to 2012- (멜로드라마에 나타난 남성상 유형의 변화 (1992년부터 2012년까지))

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how the masculinity types of the male lead appearing in melodrama genre TV series with 2005 as the borderline when we perceived the change of female types in TV drama series. To attain the goal, the paper analyzed the change of the male lead in 74 melodrama series that ranked high from 1992 till 2012 in terms of the ratings. As a result, from 2005, the types of masculinity of the male lead changed significantly. The followings deal with the details of the change: first, about the age of the male lead, those in the 30's or older increased. Second, unmarried men increased. Third, more of them saw men and women equally, and masculinity types setting no role division for men and women increased. Fourth, masculinity types of having more concern over their appearance increased. Fifth, masculinity types of relying on others when a problem occurred increased. Sixth, in relationship with others, passive masculinity types increased. There was no change in men's jobs, economic level, personality, or sexual consciousness. This study result shows that from 2005, stereotyped masculinity types shown in advanced research have disappeared a lot, and the current men image tends to show both male and female features.

  • Arisaema thunbergii supsp. geomundoense, a new taxon in Arisaema sect. Tortuosa subsect. Flagellarisaema (Araceae), from Is1. Geomun-do, Dadohae National Park, Korea, is described. It is distinct from subsp. thunbergii in having bright purple enlargement at the base of spadix appendage, and in having wrinkled enlargement at the base of spadix appendage from subsp. urashima.

Study on Molecular Phylogenetics of Korean Arisaema Species Based on Universal DNA Barcodes (범용성 DNA 바코드 분석 기반 한국산 천남성속(Arisaema) 식물의 분자계통학적 연구)

  • Molecular phylogenetic analysis was conducted to evaluate the taxonomic relationships of genus Arisaema L. distributed in Korea and the molecular phylogenetic characteristics of three authentic Arisaema species for the herbal medicine Arisaematis Rhizoma (the rhizomes of A. amurense, A. heterophyllum, and A. erubescens). The sequences of three DNA barcodes (rDNA-ITS, matK, and rbcL) were analyzed using 50 samples of nine taxa consisted of eight Korean and one Chinese Arisaema with one outgroup (Dracunculus vulgaris). Both individual and combined phylogenetic analyses of three DNA barcode sequences revealed that the treated nine taxa are independently classified into six distinct clades (Clade I, A. amurense f. amurense and A. amurense f. serratum; Clade II, A. serratum and A. takesimense; Clade III, A. ringens; Clade IV, A. erubescens; Clade V, A. heterophyllum; Clade VI, A. thunbergii subsp. thunbergii and A. thunbergii subsp. geomundoense). These six clades were reasonably divided into three individual sections, Pedatisecta, Sinarisaema, and Tortuosa. Futhermore, the results of comparative DNA barcode sequences analyses provided a significant information for the taxonomic reconsideration of Arisaema L. at the specific and intraspecific level. However, we could not confirm the taxonomic characteristics or identity among the three authentic medicinal species through the molecular phylogenetic analyses of genus Arisaema L. for Arisaematis Rhizoma.

  • 본 연구는 남성에 대한 인식이 변화하고 외모에 대한 남성들의 관심이 증가되고 있는 사회적 상황에서 사회적 배경에 따라 남성의 메이크업문화가 형성되어온 과정을 고찰하고 사회의 의식, 가치, 이념을 반영하면서 새로운 것을 창조하는 사회 문화적 기능을 수행한다고 할 수 있는 남성화장품 광고를 중심으로 가치관과 사회적 의미의 변화를 고찰, 분석하는데 그 목적이 있다. 남성의 메이크업문화를 분석하기 위해 질적인 연구방법인 문헌고찰을 통해 시대적 배경을 고찰하였으며 화장품광고 텍스트를 분석하는데는 내용분석과 기호학적 분석을 실시함으로써 결과를 객관화 하고자 하였다.
