  • PET (Polyethylene terephthalate), a representative plastic material, has useful physicochemical properties such as high durability and economic feasibility, and is used in various industrial fields such as bottles, fibers, and containers. Due to the recent increase in plastic usage including disposable products, eco-friendly strategy using microorganisms have drawn attention differentiated from conventional landfill and incineration methods. In this study, a soil-derived Streptomyces javensis Inha503 containing a PETase gene was selected and the ability to hydrolyze PU (Polyurethane) was confirmed through agar plate diffusion assay. This strain was cultured with PET for a month, and PET decomposition ability was also confirmed through a scanning electron microscope. Moreover, cloning and heterologous expression of S. javensis Inha503 PETase gene exhibited PET activity in the PETase non-containing S. coelicolor, confirming for the first time the presence of functional PETase gene in Streptomyces species.

  • The skin of the human body occupies the largest surface area of the body and acts as a protection for the person's internal organs. As such, the skin is a major target of oxidative stressors, and these oxidative stressors are known to contribute to skin aging over the course of time. For the most part, an antioxidant is an effective approach to utilize to prevent symptoms related to the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced aging of the skin. Therefore, we investigated the antioxidant and anti-aging activity of the leaves of the Quercusaliena Blume extract (QBE). In our study, we confirmed that the cell viability tested with XTT {2,3-bis(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide innersalt} assay was not affected up to a concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$. In addition, the cell viability of HDF cells induced by hydrogen peroxide was recovered from 81% to 104% after treatment with QBE, which showed the greater protective effect than that of ascorbic acid. Treatments of QBE dose-dependently inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in HDF cells induced by hydrogen peroxide, which correlated with their protective effects on cell viability. Since QBE treatment exhibited the suppression effect of skin aging by decreasing the ROS production, QBE could be used as a not only natural anti-aging but also antioxidant resource.

  • This paper analyzes the asymmetric pass-through effects of crude oil price changes on export prices in Korea's manufacturing sector using a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model. These pass-through effects are important for Korean companies that are highly dependent on exports. Because the effects differ by industry, eight sectors of the manufacturing industry were examined. The model is effective for separately testing the long-term and short-term differences between the export-price pass-through effects when crude oil prices increase and decrease. The estimation results show that there is positive pass-through to export prices as crude oil prices change, and there are asymmetric effects in some manufacturing sectors. Short-term asymmetries were detected in the export prices of five sectors that include general machinery and transport equipment, and significant long-term asymmetries were found for petroleum and coal products and for textile and leather products. The long-term export price of oil and coal products rose by 0.992% with a 1% increase in the oil price and fell by 0.977% with 1% decrease. Therefore, corporate strategies and government export policies should be established in accordance with these asymmetric pass-through effects.

  • The Interior finishing materials tried to evaluate the combustion characteristics and the dangerous characteristic of Floor finish and Wall finish. We often use, conducting the experiment ISO 5660-1, Cone Calorimeter method, and ISO-TR-9122 FT-IR. According to the result of Cone calorimeter experiment, the tile carpet FF3 of Floor material had the highest THR $74.6mj/m^2$ because of the highest risk, and the PHRR of FF1 was $726kW/m^2$, which was easy to bum. As a result FT-IR test, The CO, $CO_2$ ratio was 8,146 PPM for roll carpet FF1 than tile carpet FF2, FF3 5,996, 5,171 PPM, which was a carpet with a high toxicity risk. In the case of wall finishes, The MDF plate(WF3) was THR $86.7mj/m^2$ with a high risk, PHRR $384kW/m^2$ was easy to ignite and toxicity index was 5.5. The CO, $CO_2$ ratio was 1,340~8,596 PPM, But the WF4 was the most toxic with 8,596 PPM.

  • This study examined the separation characteristics of some of the most commonly used disperse, reactive and acid dyes by nanofiltration membrane. The chemical characteristics of three major dye solutions such as chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total organic carbon, color, suspended solids, total dissolved solids, conductivity were investigated in this work. Experiments showed that the types of dye had a significant effect on both permeate flux and rejection efficiencies mainly due to the differences among their chemical structures and natures. Especially, the nanofiltration of reactive dye solutions showed higher permeate flux, lower total dissolved solid rejection efficiency and higher organics rejection efficiency than those of disperse dye solutions.

  • Fiber-reinforced composite laminates have high specific stiffness and strength and are expected to be useful for weight reduction in weight-sensitive industries, such as automotive and aerospace. However, designing composite laminates is often dependent on designer's experience and intuition because of difficulties in determining the number of plies and stacking sequence, which tends to lead to over-design. In this study, optimal design of composite laminates was performed to minimize weight, while withstanding the given load. Based on the enumeration method, all combinations of stacking sequence satisfying the design guideline for composite laminates were considered. Composite laminates were discretized into panels. Optimal number of plies and stacking sequence for each panel were determined considering local load on each panel and contiguity across adjacent panels. Failure index from Tsai-Wu criteria was optimized for strength and buckling analysis was performed for compressive load. Stacking angles of 0, ±45 and 90° were used.

  • It is very important to utilize effectively fibrous waste paper in terms of cost savings, environmental effects, and governmental policies. The quality of final products and runnability of papermaking process are primarily affected by constitutions of fibrous raw materials. In specific, board grade paper depends directly on compositions of waste paper bales. At present, the raw materials of board grade paper are mainly derived from lots kinds of wastepaper. Some papermaking countries, like EU, USA and Japan have advanced classification and management systems of recycled fiber, but Korea has not yet organized systematically. In this study, evaluation of wastepaper bale compositions and their fiber properties were carried out for effective utilization of fibrous raw materials for board grade paper production. 3 kinds of wastepaper bales were classified to fibrous or non-fibrous materials. In case of fibrous materials, KOCC, kraft sack paper and white duplex board matters were main component in total weight basis, and in case of non-fibrous materials, vinyl, plastic and cloth matters were main component, in turns. 3 representative kinds of waste paper were disintegrated and classified, and then prepared to handsheet for evaluation of recycled fiber property. Consequently, fines and ash content of waste paper, isolated from KOCC and white duplex board were higher than that of kraft sack paper. pH values of all kinds of waste fibers were neutral or weak alkaline.

  • In spite of diverse applications of chitin derivatives, commercial use of chitin has been limited due to highly resistance to chemicals and the absense of proper solvents. One of methods to reduce such high resistance to chemicals is to make microcrystalline chitin(MCC) by hydrolysis of chitin. Presently, MCC is produced mainly by using high concentration of acid, but this treatment requires an extensive posttreatment to remove or recover acid. An alternative process for MCC production was developed by using dilute hydrochloric acid with ultrasound and hydrogen peroxide. The major parameters for this process were found to be acid concentration, swelling time and temperature, and irradiation time and frequency of ultrasound. The effects of these parameters on MCC molecular weight were investigated. The molecular weight of MCC produced at a typical condition was around 30,000 which was approximately 1/8 of that of chitin and approached to a constant value. This phenomenon was explained by introducing the model of molecular arrangement of cellulose. SEM analysis showed that both chitin and MCC had a fibrous shaped morphology and the fibril size of MCC was much smaller than that of chitin.

  • The article explains about development of flame retardant self-reinforced composites (FR-SRC) through compression molding technique by utilizing Polypropylene (PP), Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and chitosan. The effect of APP and chitosan on mechanical, thermal and flame retardant properties in FR-SRC were studied. The mechanical strength of FR-SRC is enhanced than Pure SRC. However, the strength is decreased significantly with increasing the concentration of both flame retardant fillers. But comparison, chitosan filled FR-SRC is stronger than APP filled FR-SRC. In case of flame retardancy, APP is more effective than chitosan. These results can be applicable to provide light weight and recyclable flame retardant self-reinforced composites for automobile and packaging industries, etc.
