  • The purpose of this study is on the Shera's sociological aspect of librarianship. Jesse H. Shera, educator, philosopher, and theoretician, considered that perhaps his most significant contribution to librarianship was not a “thing” but a “concept”. Library was created to meet certain social necessities, and that its development is closely related not only to intellectual history but also to change in the organizational structure and the value system of its supporting culture. It is axiomatic, then, that the library as a social instrumentality. is, as it has always been, conditioned and shaped by the social milieu within which it function. Therefore we are concerned with the need for a new epistemological discipline, a body of new about knowledge itself.

  • From the outset Library and Information Science as a field of discipline began as part of the social sciences (or applied social sciences) in the 1930s. However, due to the practicality and technology emphasized by functionalists, the social science characteristics deteriorated and the science and technological aspect became more accentuated. Ultimately, Library and Information Science was not able to identify its main research subject of libraries and associated apparatuses as a form of social knowledge system, and could not help but neglect to induct and apply theory and philosophy from the social sciences. In the present study, after an examination of social epistemology and sociology of knowledge, which are important epistemological foundations necessary for the strengthening of social scientific aspect of Library and Information Science, a new research parameter called sociology of library was presenteL The sociology of library will be a scheme for an epistemological turnover on the discipline of Library and Information Science.

  • The purpose of this research is to empirically analyze the effect of public library use on the construction of social and cultural capital and the close of social classes reproduction through the survey targeting public library users. As a result, the use of public libraries positively affects the construction of both social and cultural capital. In contrast, it partially addresses the problems in social classes reproduction because the social classes with higher levels of education and income tend to use public libraries more often. In order to take a role of and contribute to equal construction of social and cultural capital, public libraries need to be public places for open and social interaction. In addition, it is necessary for public libraries to improve their roles to allow community members to access and utilize various cultural resources.

  • This study is for a small sized library to expand the functions of public libraries in the community. This study aims to encourage local residents utilizing information and public libraries by opening parted facilities to public and naming it a substitute. It is expected to contribute to richer welfare system. In detail, the study discusses progression of the small sized library as well as budgeting and hiring staffs in Committee on Library and Policy. However, there is limitations in terms of capabilities because school library is different from public library target users, space, unit plans. • This research empirically analyzed the effect of information sharing through the use of public libraries on the construction and consolidation of social capital of individuals. Through the survey targeting public library users, it was identified that the frequency of public library use and the participation of public library programs have positive effect on the recognition of information sharing and the reliability of information shared. In addition, information sharing among people became more active when public libraries mediate their information activities. This public library-mediated information sharing positively affects the construction of structural and relational social capital. In contrast, it does not have significant meaning on the construction of cognitive social capital, which means that information sharing and the use of public library relatively concentrate on satisfying personal information needs.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze the development process of Korean children's libraries from 1945 to 2002. The development process of Korean children's library is divided into stages as follows. First, the preparation period (after colonial liberation in 1945~1976) is the time when library services for children were started, focusing on children's rooms in public libraries. The children's libraries were not recognized enough to be established. Second, the growing period (1977~2002), was primarily aimed at providing library services to children. In this period, the children's libraries were mainly established in the private sector rather than the public sector.

  • This study analyzed recent cases of transition to open access(OA) journals in humanities and social sciences(HSS) in foreign countries to find a way to transition to OA journals in Korea. Ling OA and UP led by researchers, OLH and KU led by libraries, S2O led by publishers and L+F model led by funders and libraries were analyzed. Programs by national funding agencies such as the Norwegian Research Council, Canada Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Austrian Science Fund, and Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences were also reviewed. Based on the results of the analyses, this study suggests for transition in Korean HSS field as follows; 1) transitions to open access journals in HSS should be supported at national level 2) the stakeholder in scholarly communications such as the nation, universities, libraries, research funders, scholarly societies etc has their own role in the transition but funders and libraries are the most important in financial support for open access publishing 3) but the financial support for the first stage of the transition should be done at national level 4) and open access journal publishing consortium comprised of libraries and information service institutions in the public sector such as KERIS, KISTI and the national library should be established 5) non commercial publishing platforms for scholarly societies should be developed and distributed.
