The geophysical data management system was developed to meet both the increasing demands of geophysical data in the practical application of civil engineering, underground water survey, and environmental problems and needs for digital archive and quality control of geophysical data. The system for a data manager is developed under Client/Server (C/S) environment. This manager system is characterized by a relational geophysical database system using MS SQL-server, standardization of geophysical data format, the development of C/S interface program for Windows environment, and the development of transfer program module for the searched data. The system developed for a general user under the internet environment is characterized by Web service (URL:http//geophy.kigam.re.kr) and the development of plug-in module to visualize geophysical image data.

In this study, we describe the principle and result of geophysical techniques which are widely used in geotechnical survey. Also we discuss two case histories. One is discrimination of limestone cavity areas by resistivity, seismic tomography, televiewer, well logging, and the other is discrimination of coal by resistivity, electromagnetic method, resistivity tomography.

Cruiser Dmitri Donskoi was constructed in 1895. During the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), she was damaged in an attack by Japanese destroyers at the battle of Tsushima, and scuttled in the east sea of Ulleungdo, Korea Peninsula on the 29th May 1905. In 2003, Dmitri Donskoi was found at the distance of 2 km off the east coast of Ulleung Island and at the depth of 400 m. Archival research was performed as the preliminary study for investigating the sunken ship.

Magnetic method is rapid, cheap and simple geophysical exploration technique, and has wide range of applications such as resources prospecting, geological structure investigation and even geotechnical and environmental problems. Documents during Japanese occupation says that magnetic method was used for exploring metallic ore deposits and hot spring, and that a geomagnetic observatory was operated. From mid 1950's, magnetic explorations for natural resources such as metallic ore, uranium, coal, and groundwater were intensively executed for industrialization. Magnetic survey techniques were rapidly advanced during 1970's and 1980's with improvements of instruments, growth of geophysical manpower, and availability of computers. Decline of mining industry since mid 1980's moved the exploration objects from traditional resources to new ones such as groundwater and geothermal resources. Recently appeared applications such as natural hazard assessment, and engineering and environmental studies increased the magnetic method's utility in the realm of exploration.
