  • We investigated student's characteristics in each educational achievement level using the results of the NAEA (National Assessment of Educational Achievement) in 2009, 2010, and 2011 for Grade 6 students, and compared the characteristics between elementary and middle school students. The analysis of representative items for each educational achievement level of elementary and middle school students revealed that (a) advanced level students from both elementary and middle school could exactly understand the achievement criteria of the curriculum, (b) proficient level students from both elementary and middle school were understanding the achievement criteria of the curriculum superficially, for example, they could not understand concepts exactly but could memorize terms, and so should have compensational education under situations that ask for short answer or essay type items instead of multiple choice items, and (c) basic level students from both elementary and middle school almost could not understand the achievement criteria of curriculum, and so should have compensational education under situations that only deal with a simple situation. Science concepts treated in science curriculum are hierarchically organized by level of school, and simple compensational education for the students of below basic level will not solve learning deficits in science education. Differentiated education by educational achievement should be largely expanded instead.

  • The recent international comparative studies such as PISA(Program for International Student Assessment) and TIMSS-R(Third International Mathematics and Science Study-Repeat) provide results of relative mathematics achievement of participating countries. The purpose of this paper is to compare the mathematics results of PISA and TIMSS-R. To make PISA and TIMSS-R results comparable, they were standardized. The close investigation of these standardized results reveals that the two Asian countries(Korea and Japan) and several English speaking countries have the commonality in mathematics achievement. Thus this study looks for patterns and similarities within a group of Asian countries(Korea and Japan) and Western countries(the U.S and Australia) by in-depth analysis of PISA mathematics achievement based on item response theory. As a result, it was noted that Western countries tend to perform well on open constructed items and are likely to perform better when an item involves less formal mathematics. On the other hand, Asian countries perform well when an item involves numeric or algebraic computation related to curriculum-based content, but they are relative poor at an item calls for verbal explanations or interpretations of graphs.

  • I took a look at the note written by the students in math class. But, it was sort of a 'scratch paper' because they focused only on the problems or do not know the writing a notebook. Thus, I prepared organizational writing activity through learning-notebooks and analyzed the results from the writing activity through learning-notebooks in order to recognize the effects how the activity influences students' mathematics academic achievements and attitude. As a result, I could find that writing activity through learning-notebooks contributes to the enhancement of mathematics academic achievement and attitude.

  • Our government has used the result of National Assessment of Educational Achievement(NAEA) with one of data to check and improve the existing curricula and educational policies. The reason to devote these efforts is for the purpose of boosting the students' academic ability. Here, one of works based on the growth of the students' academic ability is to grasp what contents they are vulnerable to. Next work is to improve the methods to teach the appropriate content. So, in this paper I grasped the tendencies of the whole students and male/female students in middle school to appear in the results of 2010, 2011 NAEA. On the basis of those I grasp what contents the whole students and male/female students are vulnerable and I suggest the implications of teaching and learning for those contents.

  • Research in teachers' knowledge for teaching mathematics (KTM) has been gradually growing for the past several years. With various conceptualizations about what teachers need to teach mathematics, there have been studies to find out the relationship between teachers' KTM and their students' achievement. In this paper, I reviewed various conceptualizations of teacher's mathematical knowledge for teaching, and existing qualitative and quantitative studies about this relationship. Based on the review, I identified the challenges to studying this relationship mainly focusing on the existence of a phase-teaching practice-between teachers' KTM and students' learning. Considering the challenges that have been identified in the literature review, I proposed topics for future studies that would contribute to our understanding how the teachers' KTMare related to their students' achievement, and investigate further about whether and how teacher-student interaction in classroom is related to changes in teachers' KTM.

  • In this study we compare academic achievements of college students admitted by admissions officer selection with those admitted by general selection. Two measurements of the academic achievements considered are GPA (grade point average) and relative ascending rank of GPA. By the comparison of the academic achievements, we would like to assess the effectiveness of the admissions office selection and then provide a basis for screening good students by that selection. The results of data analysis indicate that the academic achievements of admissions officer selection students tend to be lower than those of early general admission students and also those of regular general admission students tend to be higher than those of early general admission students.

  • This research estimated the variation of high school students' academic achievement by using the second to the fourth wave KEEP(Korea Education and Employment Panel) data. We explored the effects of study on academic achievement in proportion to self-regulated learning hours(except for school work and private tutoring). Analysis variables were self-directed learning(study) hours throughout senior high school and 9 grade academic achievement. We conducted Latent Growth Model(LGM) using KEEP panel data and program LISREL 8.8. Results showed that there were significant effects of self-regulated learning hours on the variation of senior high school students' academic achievement. Therefore, this was considered to be useful tips in getting the relation between students' learning and academic achievement.
