The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the undergraduate nursing students have developed their critical thinking disposition, and problem solving ability after they have completed the course. Data were analyzed using repeated measure ANOVA and paired t-test test with SPSS Statistics version 16.0. The study has shown that the students have developed their critical thinking disposition, especially in sub items as prudence, self-confidence, intellectual fairness, healthy skepticism after completing the undergraduate course, but they have failed to mature their problem solving ability except personal control ability. Therefore, it is critical to continuously apply the various teaching methods that will successfully help students enhance their critical thinking disposition and problem solving ability through the whole nursing curriculum.
We incorporated cooperative learning focusing on the 'Crustal Deformation' in five classes of second grade students, at an all-girls' middle school of Gimje city. The groups of cooperative learning were composed of four members of students each, according to the heterogeneous level. We conducted a pretest on the students' preference before incorporating the cooperative learning. After ten weeks of cooperative school work, the students took a post test with the same questions as the pretest. The result of this method greatly impacted the change on the students' scientific preference. It means that the students showed a positive change in their awareness of and participation in science classes, compared to before. However it is difficult to distinguish the differences in their scientific attitude on the recognition about scientists and habits which make them think scientifically. This resulted from the short period of ten weeks which is not sufficient to carry out the study strategy effectively. Surveys of the students on cooperative learning indicates that the middle level students prefer this method unlike the higher or lower level students. we are convinced that they can learn from the students of higher level and are able to help the lower level with the interaction through cooperative learning. According to the result of the survey, the method has some weaknesses; it arouses the high noise levels and consequent disturbance due to verbal interaction and of conflicts due to disagreements when they discuss the process. On the contrary, advantages are developing the students's interest in science class, helping them to learn, creating positive participation in class, and fostering mutual collaboration with other students through cooperative learning.
Currently the universities in Korea have faced a critical situation for university entrants deficiency, especially in the fields of science and engineering. It will be act as a big crisis for the future national competences in science and technology. Therefore Kongju National University have been providing the engineering education program for highschool students during the summer vacation since 2001 as giving a chance of engineering laboratory experiences. The purpose of this thesis was to analyze communicational means of mathematical communication in perspective of languages and behaviors. Research questions were as follows; First, how are the characteristics of mathematical languages in communicating process of mathematical small group learning? Second, how are the characteristics of behaviors in communicating process of mathematical small group learning? The analyses of students' mathematical language were as follows; First, the ordinary language that students used was the demonstrative pronoun in general, mainly substituted for mathematical language. Second, students depended on verbal language rather than mathematical representation in case of mathematical communication. Third, quasi-mathematical language was mainly transformed in upper grade level than lower grade, and it was shown prominently in shape and measurement domain. Fourth, In mathematical communication, high level students used mathematical language more widely and initiatively than mid/low level students. Fifth, mathematical language use was very helpful and interactive regardless of the student's level. In addition, the analyses of students' behavior facts were as follows; First, students' behaviors for problem-solving were shown in the order of reading, understanding, planning, implementing, analyzing and verifying. While trials and errors, verifying is almost omitted. Second, in mathematical communication, while the flow of high/middle level students' behaviors was systematic and process-directed, that of low level students' behaviors was unconnected and product-directed.

'Divisor and multiple' is the topic included both in the elementary and in the secondary mathematics curriculum, but there has been lack of research on it. It has been reported that students have a difficulty in understanding the meaning of the greatest common divisor (GCD) and the least common multiple (LCM), while they can find out GCD and LCM. Against the lack of research on how to overcome this difficulty, this study designed teaching methods with a model for visualization to emphasize the meanings of divisor and multiple in finding out GCD and LCM, and implemented the methods in one fourth grade classroom. A questionnaire was developed to explore students' solution methods and interviews with focused students were implemented. In addition, fourth-grade students' thinking was compared and contrasted with fifth-grade students who studied divisor and multiple with the current textbook. The results of this study showed that the teaching methods with a specific model for visualization had a positive impact on students' conceptual understanding of the process to find out GCD and LCM. As such, this study provides instructional implications on how to foster the meanings of finding out GCD and LCM at the elementary school.
The present study aims to investigate ways in which pre-service secondary mathematics teachers anticipate 1) students' responses to specific mathematical tasks which are chosen or devised by the participating pre-service teachers as requiring students' higher cognitive demand and, 2) their roles as math teachers to scaffold students' mathematical thinking. To achieve the goal, we had our pre-service teachers to engage in an adapted version of Spangler & Hallman-Thrasher(2014)'s Task Dialogue writing activity whose focus was to develop pre-service elementary teachers' ability to orchestrate mathematical discussion. 14 pre-service teachers who were junior at the time enrolled in the Mathematics Teaching Method Course were subjects of the current study. In-depth analysis of both Task Dialogues which pre-service secondary mathematics teachers wrote and audiotapes of the group discussions while they wrote the dialogues suggests the following results: First, the pre-service secondary teachers anticipated how students would approach a task based on their own teaching experiences. Second, they were challenged not only to anticipate more than one correct students' responses but to generate questions for the predicted correct-responses to bring forth students' divergent thinking. Finally, although they were aware that students' knowledge should be the crucial element guiding their decision-making process in teaching, they tended to lower the cognitive demands of tasks by providing students with too much guidance which brought forth the use of procedural knowledge. The study contributes to the field as it provides insights as to what to attend in designing teacher education course whose goal is to provide a foundation for developing pre-service teachers' ability to effectively orchestrate mathematical discussion.

Citizens should be sensitive to the complex and controversial SSIs (Socioscientific Issues), be able to make a responsible decision with evidence and empathy, and furthermore take political action for the larger welfare. The premise of this research is that understanding the nature of science (NOS) takes an important role when students and adults participate in the discourse on SSIs because SSI reasoning requires individuals to examine information and counter-information with skepticism. We therefore designed SSI programs that were incorporated with NOS by adapting a contextualized-reflective approach. The leading research question was to what extent SSI contexts contributed to promoting students' understanding of NOS. A total of 71 11th grade students participated in this program. The school was located in an urban city near the capital city of Seoul, South Korea. We designed SSI programs to cover the issues of genetically modified organisms, climate change, and nuclear energy. Each issue required four to six class periods to complete. We conducted pre- and post-program tests using the revised VNOS-C, recorded group discussions or debates and collected student worksheets to observe the increase of student NOS understanding. As a result of this program, students showed moderate improvement in their understanding of NOS.
