It is the purpose of this study to propose improvement options and guidance methods for public design around elementary schools from the perspective of child friendly cities. The study first takes the Convention on the Rights of the Child as a benchmark, and integrates relevant United Nations documents on child friendly cities and those on child friendly cities in Shenzhen to derive five principles of public design around child friendly schools, namely, safe environment, protective measures, pedestrian friendly environment, independent environment for going out, convenient and fun environment. Subsequently, this study investigates the public design of 25 elementary schools in Futian District, Shenzhen, China, evaluates the quality level of public design according to the five principles, and points out the problems that exist in public design with lower quality level. Furthermore, in response to the existing problems of public design around elementary schools in Shenzhen, this study improves them from three aspects: public space, public facilities and public media design. More importantly, the design reinforces the safety and child protection of the environment, facilitates children's walking and independent going out, and provides a convenient and fun design that meets the physical and psychological needs of children, designed to be child-friendly. Not only does this design provide guidance for the construction of the environment around the elementary school in Shenzhen, but also provides guidelines for the construction of a child-friendly city in Shenzhen.

This study is to design the barrier-free school library facilities for the disabled students. To achieve this goal, the laws, guidelines, and checklists in Korea and USA, concerning the accessible facilities for the disabled, are collected, researched and analysed. The 14 types of the accessible facilities which are suitable for the barrier-free school library are selected. On the barrier-free school library design, the guidelines of these selected facilities are presented as the result.

Elementary schools in Korea need to create an environment for integrated education and transform into school facilities that are central to the local community. This study assessed the level of universal design application in the physical environment of elementary schools based on the seven principles of universal design in order to create an environment in which all users, including elementary school students, can access and use school facilities equally. For this aim, field research was conducted on 243 elementary schools, and facilities with low application level were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, in order to apply the principle of 'flexibility in use', the rotating handle on the side of the toilet, which is used by the wheelchair user in the way the toilet is accessed, must be installed in a top-to-bottom rotational manner. In order to improve the applicability of the 'low physical effort' principle, it is necessary to select land and apply the plan from the beginning of the design.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of physical environments change on children. Specifically, this study investigated the effects of a newly designed elementary school environment to implement open education on elementary school students. The changed environment was improved in various aspects including architectural type, the number of space types, layout, shape of the building, and color planning. This study showed evidence of interaction between aspects of the physical environment and the actual behaviors of children. The impacts of change in physical environment, more specifically, on children was confirmed by the study. Therefore, this study can be used as a basis to insist why physical educational environment needs improvement, to insist importance of physical educational environment and to justify importance of physical environment in educational setting.
