  • This study investigated instructional methods for fractional division emphasizing algebraic thinking with sixth graders. Specifically, instructional elements for fractional division emphasizing algebraic thinking were derived from literature reviews, and the fractional division instruction was reorganized on the basis of key elements. The instructional elements were as follows: (a) exploring the relationship between a dividend and a divisor; (b) generalizing and representing solution methods; and (c) justifying solution methods. The instruction was analyzed in terms of how the key elements were implemented in the classroom. This paper focused on the fractional division instruction with problem contexts to calculate the quantity of a dividend corresponding to the divisor 1. The students in the study could explore the relationship between the two quantities that make the divisor 1 with different problem contexts: partitive division, determination of a unit rate, and inverse of multiplication. They also could generalize, represent, and justify the solution methods of dividing the dividend by the numerator of the divisor and multiplying it by the denominator. However, some students who did not explore the relationship between the two quantities and used only the algorithm of fraction division had difficulties in generalizing, representing, and justifying the solution methods. This study would provide detailed and substantive understandings in implementing the fractional division instruction emphasizing algebraic thinking and help promote the follow-up studies related to the instruction of fractional operations emphasizing algebraic thinking.

  • This research intends to examine how 6th graders (age 12) generalize various increasing patterns. In this research, 6 problems corresponding to the ax, x+a, ax+c, ax2, and ax2+c patterns were given to 290 students. Students' generalization methods were analysed by the generalization level suggested by Radford(2006), such as arithmetic and algebraic (factual, contextual, and symbolic) generalization. As the results of the study, we identified that students revealed the most high performance in the ax pattern in the aspect of the algebraic generalization, and lower performance in the ax2, x+a, ax+c, ax2+c in order. Also we identified that students' generalization methods differed in the same increasing patterns. This imply that we need to provide students with the pattern generalization activities in various contexts.

  • We observed the process for solving linear equations of two 5th grade elementary students, who do not have any pre-knowledge about solving linear equation. The way of students' usage of fractional schemes and manipulations are closely observed. The change of their scheme adaptation are carefully analyzed while the coefficients and constants become complicated. The results showed that they used various fractional scheme and manipulations according to the coefficients and constants. Noticeably, they used repeating fractional schemes to establish the equivalence relation between unknowns and the given quantities. After establishing the relationship, equivalent fractions played important role. We expect the results of this study would help shorten the gap between the arithmetic and the algebraic thinking.

  • The purpose of this qualitative case study is to investigate differences among two gifted middle school students emerging through the process of algebra word problem solving from the covariational perspective. We collected the data from four middle school students participating in the mentorship program for gifted students of mathematics and found out differences between Junghee and Donghee in solving problems involving varying rates of change. This study focuses on their actions to solve and to generalize the problems situations involving constant and varying rates of change. The results indicate that their covariational reasoning played a significant role in their algebra word problem solving.

  • The purpose of this study is to discover the features of symbol sense. This study tries to sum up the meaning and elements of symbol sense and the measures to improve them through documents. Also based on this, it analyzes the learning conditions about symbol sense for 6th grade mathematically able students and suggests the method that activates symbol sense in the math of elementary schools. Considering various studies on symbol sense, symbol sense means the exact knowledge and essential understanding in a comprehensive way. Symbol sense is an intuition about symbols that grasps the meaning of symbols, understands the situation of question, and realizes the usefulness of symbols in resolving a process. Considering all other scholars' opinions, this study sums up 5 elements of the symbol sense. (The recognition of needs to introduce symbol, ability to read the meaning of symbols, choice of suitable symbols according to the context, pattern guess through visualization, recognize the role of symbols in other context) This study draws the following conclusions after applying the symbol questionnaires targeting 6th grade mathematically able students : First, although they are math talents, there are some differences in terms of the symbol sense level. Second, 5 elements of the symbol sense are not completely separated. They are rather closely related in terms of mainly the symbol understanding, thereby several elements are combined.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of teaching on functional thinking, one of the algebraic thinking in sixth grade students level. For this study, we developed functional thinking based-teaching through analyzing mathematical curriculum and preceding research, which consisted of 12 classes, and we investigated the effects of teaching through quantitative and qualitative analysis. In the results of this study, functional thinking based-teaching was statistically proven to be more effective in improving algebraic reasoning skills and lower elements which is an algebraic reasoning as generalized arithmetic and functional thinking, compared to traditional textbook-centered lessons. In addition, the functional thinking based-teaching gave a positive impact on the functional thinking level. Thus functional thinking based-teaching provides guidance on the implications for teaching and learning methods and study of the functional thinking in the future, because of the significant impact on the mathematics learning in six grade students.

  • Linear algebra is not only applied comprehensively in the branches of mathematics such as algebra, analytics, and geometry but also utilized for finding solutions in various fields such as aeronautical engineering, electronics, biology, geology, mechanics and etc. Therefore, linear algebra should be easy and comfortable for not only mathematics majors but also for general students as well. However, most find it difficult to learn linear algebra. Why is it so? It is because many studying linear algebra fail to achieve a correct understanding or attain erroneous concepts through misleading knowledge they already have. Such cases cause learning disability and mistakes. This research suggests more effective method of teaching by analyzing difficulty and errors made in learning system of linear equations.
