A Study of Development Methods of Fatigue Life Improvement for the Suspension Material (현가장치재의 피로수명향상 공법개발에 관한 연구)

  • The development of new materials with light weight and high strength has become vital to the machinery, aircraft and auto industries. However, there are a lot of problems with developing such materials that require expensive tools, and a great deal of time and effort. Therefore, the improvement of fatigue strength and fatigue life are mainly focused on adopting residual stress(in this thesis). The compressive residual stress was imposed on the surface according to each shot velocity(57, 70, 83, 96 m/sec) based on Shot-peening, which is the method of improving fatigue life and strength. By using the methods mentioned above, the following conclusions have been drawn. 1. The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of the Shot-peened material was lower than that of the Un-peened material. And in stage I, ΔKth, the threshold stress intensity factor, of the shot-peen processed material is high in critical parts unlike the Un-peened material. Also m, fatigue crack growth exponent and number of cycle of the Shot-peened material was higher than that of the Un-peened material. That is concluded from effect of da/dN. 2. Fatigue life shows more improvement in the Shot-peened material than in the Un-peened material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the Shot-peen processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation.

  • The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industries is requiring high strength of components. Therefore this requirement is accomplished as the process of shot-peening method that the compressive residual stress is made on the metal surface as one of various improvement methods. Special research is, therefore, needed about compressive residual stress on the metal surface in the process of shot-peening method. Therefore, in this paper the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in environmental condition(temperature) and mechanical condition(shot velocity, stress ratio) was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. By using the methods mentioned above, the following conclusions have been drawn. (1) The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of the shot-peened material was lower than that of the un-peened one. In high temperature range. fatigue crack growth rate decreased with increasing temperature range, while fatigue crack growth rate increased by decreasing temperature in low temperature. (2) Fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot-peened material than in the un-peened material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the shot-peen processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation.

  • Unlike simulating general 'particle-based fluid explosion', simulating fluid with elasticity requires various experimental methods in order to show the realistic deformation of the matter. The existing studies on particle-based viscoelastic fluid only focused on matters' plastic deformation which can be found in mud or paint, based on the maximum distortion energy theory and maximum shear stress theory. However, these former researches could not simulate the brittle deformation which can be seen from silicon or highly elastic rubber when great external forces above limits are applied. This study suggests a brittle simulation method based on the Coulomb-Mohr theory, the idea that a yield occurs when maximum stress on a matter reaches to its rupture stress. This theory has a significant difference from the existing particle-based simulations which measures the forces on a matter by length or volume. Using a strong-elastic semifluid which Coulomb-Mohr theory is applied, realistic deformation process of a matter was observed as its forced surface reached to the rupture stress. When semifluid hit the ground, the impact of deformation can be explained by using Coulomb-Mohr theory.

The Effect of Compressive Residual Stress according to Corrosion Fatigue Life of Automobile Suspension Material (자동차 현가장치재의 부식피로수명에 따른 압축잔류응력의 영향)

And Influence of corrosive condition for corrosion fatigue crack was investigated, after immersing in 3.5%NaCl, $10%HNO_3$+3.5%HF, $6%FeCl_3$. The immersion period was performed for 365days. The compressive residual stress was imposed on the surface according to each shot velocity based on shot peening, which is the method of improving fatigue life and strength. Fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot peened material than in the un peened material in corrosion conditions. The threshold stress intensity factor range was decreased in corrosion environments over ambient. Compressive residual stress of surface on the Shot-peen processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation. The fatigue crack growth rate of the Shot-peened material was lower than that of the un peened material. Also m, fatigue crack growth exponent and number of cycle of the shot peened material was higher than that of the un peened material. That is concluded from effect of da/dN.

Behavior of Buried Pipe under Embankment (성토하에 매설된 관의 거동)

  • The stresses on the buried steel pipe under embankment are analysed by the elasto-plastic theory using FEM to study the influences of the geometry of soil-conduit pipe system and the elastic modulus of the fill on the pipe responses . The geometry of the system considered in this study includes the height of embankment, the thickness of the pipe, and the width and the depth of the trench . By comparing the stresses computed by Marston-Spangler's pipe theory with those obtained from the elasto-plastic theory, Marston-Spangler's theory was discussed and analysed . It is found that the stress distribution around the pipe by elasto- plastic analysis is similar to that by Spangler's flexible pipe theory when the geometrical ratio (diameter/thickness) of the steel pipe is 400. And Spangler's flexible pipe theory does not seem to be suitable to analyse the buried steel pipe of which the geometrical ratio is lower than 200. The vertical loads by the rigid pipe theory are always larger than those by the flexible pipe theory regardness of the variations in the geometry of soil-conduit pipe system considered above and the elastic modulus of the fill.

Investigation of the Maintenance Criteria for the Rail Surface Defects in High-Speed Railways (고속철도 레일 표면 결함 관리기준에 관한 연구)

  • The rail surface defects can cause the high impact load on the track and lead to the progress of the rail fatigue damage and the rail break. In case of the rail break, there is a great deal of risk for derailment, and thus the maintenance criteria for the rail surface defects are of great importance. In this study, using the dynamic train-track interaction analysis program, the impact wheel loads and rail bending stresses according to the depths of the surface defects have been calculated with the input data of the rail surface irregularities measured at 43 spots with surface defects in the ballasted track of high-speed railway. Considering the irregularity of track geometry, the allowable limits of wheel load and rail bending stress have been set, and the maintenance criteria for the rail surface defects was suggested by analyzing the relationship of the maximum values of wheel load and rail bending stress versus depth and width of rail surface defect. The analysis results suggest that the allowable depth of the surface defect is determined approximately 0.2mm from the limit of the impact wheel load.

  • 벽면에서의 전단응력 분포와 유동장 내에서의 3차원 유동 요소를 추적하는 유동가시화 기법중 에서 몇 가지를 그 응용 예와 함께 살펴보았다. 3차원 유동의 주요 특징들과 한계유선(limiting streamlines)을 관찰하기 위해서는 oil and lampblack 기법이 충분하나 유속이 작거나 유동의 방향이 분명하지 않은 곳에서는 ink dot 기법을 적용하는 것이 좋다. Oil and lampblack 기법은 실험하고자 하는 유동의 조건에 따라 기름과 분말의 혼합비, 기름의 점도 등을 잘 선택하여야 한다. 안장점(Saddle point) 이나 재부착선(reattachment line)과 같이 성격상 중요한지점을 찾기 위해서는 털실 프로브(single tuft probe)가 유용하게 쓰이며, 이는 또 유동내에서 와동의 존재와 위치를 찾는데 쓰이기도 한다. 수치해석 결과 얻을 수 잇는 속도벡터와 같이 비교적 넓은 유동 장을 한눈에 관찰하기 위해서는 털실 격자망 (tuft grid)을 사용할 수 있으며 각 털실은 그 지 점세서의 유동의 방향과 그 안정성(steadiness)를 나타내준다. 이러한 유동가시화 방법들은 각 유동의 특성에 맞는 적절한 조건을 맞추기 위해서 많은 시행착오를 거쳐야 하며, 하나의 만족 스러운 결과를 얻기 위해서는 많은 기술과 시간과 연습을 요구하고 있어서 다른 정량적인 측정 기술과 더불어 커다란 노력과 관심을 기울여서 발전시켜야만 할 것이다.

피로균열진전거동 평가를 위한 균열길이 측정법 - 직류전위차법

  • 철강구조물 부재 내에 노치나 균열이 존재할 수 있고, 외부의 피로하중에 의하여 취약부에서 발생한 균열이 진전하여 전구조물의 최종파손을 야기시킬 수 있다. 부재를 보다 안전하게 사용하고 또한 신뢰성을 확보하기 위해서는 이미 손상된 부재에서 균열의 진전상태를 계측할 수 있는 방법이 확립되어져야 하고, 파괴역학적 파라미터를 이용한 사용재의 균열진전거동특성이 평가되어야 한다. 균열길이의 측정방법은 지금까지 많은 연구자들에 의하여 개발되어져 왔는데 크게 광학현미경을 이용하여 육안으로 직접 균열길이를 측정하는 방법과 컴플라이언스, 초음파, AE 또는 전기적 신호를 통하여 얻어진 결괄부터 균열길이로 환산하는 간접적인 방법으로 대별된다. 대부분의 균열길이의 측정방법은 많은 수작업이 요구되고, 특히 하한계응력확대계수영역의 미세한 균열진전량을 측정하기에는 어려움이 따르고 있다. 이에 대하여 전도체 시험편에 일정전류를 흐르게 하고 균열길이의 증가에 따라 변화하는 전위차로 이를 균열길이로 평가하는 전기적인 측정방법이 있다. 이 방법은 실험장치가 비교적 간단하고 미세한 균열길이의 측정이 용이하여 균열길이의 직접적인 측정이 곤란한 고온역 그리고 충격하중하에서의 균열길이 측정에 이용이 확대되고 있다. 이 글에서는 여러 균열길이 측정방법의 장.단점에 대하여 고찰하고, 그 중 많은 장점을 갖고 있는 직류전위차법의 실험방법을 소개한다.

A Study of Crack Growth Behavior of Al2024 (Al2024의 균열성장거동에 관한 연구)

  • This study describes the fatigue characteristics for Al2024 alloy, which is aircraft structure material. For this work, the plane-strain fracture toughness test, the plane-stress fracture toughness test and the crack growth rates test were conducted under the standard testing method. Test equipment is a computer-controlled closed-loop fatigue testing machine. The data of each test result is very important to aircraft structure reliability estimation, life prediction, design analysis, endurance analysis and damage tolerance analysis. In addition, the fatigue crack growth threshold($\DeltaKth$) value decreased as the stress ratio increased. Also, $\DeltaKth$ decreased as the thickness increased in LT, TL directions.

  • To demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing FCAD chart proposed in our previous work, series of crack growth/arrest behavior in the integrally stiffened panels were simulated by numerical method using upper mentioned FCAD charts and a new crack growth rate equation. It is concluded that proposed family of FCAD curves, in the form of non-dimensional arrest load ranges, are reliable indicators of fatigue crack growth/arrest behavior of integrally stiffened panels considered here.
