  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of dams on benthic macroinvertebrate communities in Korean streams and rivers. Four low-head dams and three large dams were studied throughout South Korea. Sampling was taken at immediately upper (impoundment), lower (riffle area), and control (riffle area) sites from the dams during 2004-2007. The upper sites, of which substrate heterogeneity and velocity were relatively low, showed a lower degree of species richness, density, and diversity indices, which is very different from the lower and control sites. Heavily polluted streams showed a lesser degree of community differences between the upper and lower sites. In the large dams, the upper and lower sites showed very low values of species diversity indices and very high values of dominance indices compared to the control sites. In the low-head dams, however, the difference of degree of the values was relatively smaller. Compositions of the functional feeding groups and the habitat orientation groups were relatively simpler at the upper sites than at the lower sites and the degree of difference was greater in the large dams. Species richness and community indices of benthic macroinvertebrates were more significantly affected by habitat characteristics than water quality at the upper sites; however, those were more significantly related with water quality at the lower sites. In conclusion, large and low-head dams could simplify stream habitats particularly at the upper sites (impoundment), and they negatively affected on the benthic macroinvertebrate communities inhabited the habitats. The impact was larger in the large dams than in the low-head dams.

  • This study is to evaluate applicability of linkage modeling using PHABSIM (Physical Habitat Simulation System) and SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) and to estimate ecological flow for target fishes of Andong downstream (4,565.7 km2). The SWAT was established considering 2 multi purpose dam (ADD, IHD) and 1 streamflow gauging station (GD). The SWAT was calibrated and validated with 9 years (2012 ~ 2020) data of 1 stream (GD) and 2 multi-purpose dam (ADD, IHD). For streamflow and dam inflows (GD, ADD and IHD), R2, NSE and RMSE were 0.52 ~ 0.74, 0.48 ~ 0.71, and 0.92 ~ 2.51 mm/day respectively. As a result of flow duration analysis for 9 years (2012 ~ 2020) using calibrated streamflow, the average Q185 and Q275 were 36.5 m3/sec (-1.4%) and 23.8 m3/sec (0%) respectively compared with the observed flow duration and were applied to flow boundary condition of PHABSIM. The target stream was selected as the 410 m section where GD is located, and stream cross-section and hydraulic factors were constructed based on Nakdong River Basic Plan Report and HEC-RAS. The dominant species of the target stream was Zacco platypus and the sub-dominant species was Puntungia herzi Herzenstein, and the HSI (Habitat Suitability Index) of target species was collected through references research. As the result of PHABSIM water level and velocity simulation, error of Q185 and Q275 were analyzed -0.12 m, +0.00 m and +0.06 m/s, +0.09 m/s respectively. The average WUA (Weighted Usable Area) and ecological flow of Zacco platypus and Puntungia herzi Herzenstein were evaluated 76,817.0 m2/1000m, 20.0 m3/sec and 46,628.6 m2/1000m, 9.0 m3/sec. This results indicated Zacco platypus is more adaptable to target stream than Puntungia herzi Herzenstein.

  • Macromia daimoji Okumura, 1949 was designated as an endangered species and also categorized as Class II Endangered wildlife on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List in Korea. The spatial distribution of this species ranged within a region delimited by northern latitude from Sacheon-si(35.1°) to Yeoncheon-gun(38.0°) and eastern longitude from Yeoncheon-gun(126.8°) to Yangsan-si(128.9°). They generally prefer microhabitats such as slowly flowing littoral zones of streams, alluvial stream islands and temporarily formed puddles in the sand-based lowland streams. The objectives of this study were to analyze the similarity of benthic macroinvertebrate communities in M. daimoji habitats, to predict the current potential distribution patterns as well as the changes of distribution ranges under global climate change circumstances. Data was collected both from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and by field surveys from April 2009 to September 2022. We adopted MaxEnt model to predict the current and future potential distribution for M. daimoji using downloaded 19 variables from the WorldClim database. The differences of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in the mainstream of Nakdonggang were smaller than those in its tributaries and the other streams, based on the surrounding environments and stream sizes. MaxEnt model presented that potential distribution displayed high inhabiting probability in Nakdonggang and its tributaries. Applying to the future scenarios by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), SSP1 scenario was predicted to expand in a wide area and SSP5 scenario in a narrow area, comparing with current potential distribution. M. daimoji is not only directly threatened by physical disturbances (e.g. river development activities) but also vulnerable to rapidly changing climate circumstances. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the habitat environments and establish conservation strategies for preserving population of M. daimoji.

  • To investigate the changes of dominant species of benthic macroinvertebrates following summer precipitation variance, we surveyed twenty five sites of the main Seomjin River in May and September in 2014 and 2015. The temperature, precipitation, water quality factors and substrate composition, water depth and flow velocity, which are important factors in benthos habitat environment, were collected and measured. There is not much difference of the cumulative precipitation (CP) between 2014 (2,322.1 mm) and 2015 (2,371.0 mm) in May. However CP in september was decreased by more than half in 2015 (3,726.1 mm) than 2014 (7,678.2 mm). Due to washing effect by summer precipitation, total number of species and individuals for benthic macroinvertebrates were higher in May than in September. Chironomidae spp. and Choroterpes altioculus were dominated in May, Ecdyonurus levis, Ecdyonurus kibunensis were dominated in September. As a result of correlation analysis between community indices and environment factors, it was found that there is a significant correlation with flow velocity and substrate compositions. According to the results of cluster analysis and PCA based on environment fators and dominant species of benthic macroinvertebrates in Seomjin River, it was divided into four groups following CP and MT. Ecdyonurus levis and Ecdyonurus kibunensis reflect the effect of the decrease in summer precipitation.

  • We assessed fish fauna and habitat suitability indexes in the Geum river basin. Field monitoring was conducted for ecological and habitat condition assessment at 23 sites from October 2007 to March 2009. The habitat suitability indexes established for dominant fish species using the monitoring data were employed to assess riverine health conditions such as composition ratio of fish species, richness and dominance indexes, bio-diversity(dominance index, diversity, evenness and richness), and water depth, velocity and substrate size. Twenty-one species(42%) including Rhodeus uyekii and Pseudopungtungia nigra were found endemic out of the 50 species in 11 families sampled during this study period. The most frequently found one was Zacco platypus(34.3%) followed by Z. koreanus(10.2%) and Coreoleuciscus splendidus(8.4%). For Z. platypus, the dominant fish species in the basin, the favored habitat conditions were estimated to be 0.1~0.9 m for water depth, 0~0.9m/s for flow velocity and silt(<0.1mm)~cobbles(100.0~300.0mm) for substrate size, respectively. Overall, it was concluded that the Geum river basin has been relatively well protected from the anthropogenic disturbance for the legally protected species including the endemic species studied in this study.

  • The study examines two different sites to analyze the difference of stream channel profile between two different landuse areas on Neponset River, Boston, MA. Landuse represents the current status of land in terms of human, agricultural or forest, industry and environmental activity types. According to the previous research, forest and urban area are significantly distinguished in chemical characteristic, shape and bed load of the stream. On the chosen sites, I look at the cross-section profile, the slope, velocity, and roughness of the channels. With the data collected at the site I determined the value for the channel bed material using Manning's equation, and compared with the result of HEC-RAS model with the cross-section profile data I measured. In the forest area, water surface elevation and bed material obtained through Manning's equation are very close to HEC-RAS model result. However, in the resident area the Manning's 'n' value calculated much higher than assumption which was considered as cobble whose 'n' value is 0.03-0.06. The difference could be caused by unusual steep elevation on the site and the dam present down further. With the steep elevation upside of dam, there is critical-depth condition occurs. The difference of Manning's 'n' value reflects the difference of depth. HEC-RAS model was run to analyze the difference and the result shows that depth is 0.36 much less than 0.688 what I computed when the Manning's n value is 0.03(cobble) instead of the result of the study (0.13292). Beside, dam is a major source of fragmentation and degradation of stream, and it's possibly inferred upstream water levels are increased and stream velocity is decreased. This study is meaningful for introduction of HEC-RAS in geography field to analyze different sites with channel bed material, and it is going to be used more actively to manage river and river side.

  • Nakdan weir, which is located in the second weir among the 8 weirs of Nakdong River, had been constructed from Nov. 2009 to Nov. 2011. To analyze the effect of Nakdan weir construction on benthic macroinvertebrates, we studied 2 sites around Nakdan weir (upstream and downstream) from 2007 to 2014. The average numbers of species and individuals were decreased after the construction (in 2012~2014, 51 species $895inds.\;m^{-2}$) than before construction (in 2007~2009, 25 species $84inds.\;m^{-2}$), especially in upstream site of Nakdan weir. After the construction, especially in 2012, dominance indices (DI) were increased by the decline of some specific taxon population, such as Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera, etc. After construction, individual ratios of GC (Gathering Collectors) and P (Predator) of FFGs (Functional feeding groups) and BU (Burrowers) of HOGs (Habitat orientation groups) were higher than before construction. So the results of this study indicate that the changes by a weir construction, such as the decline of shallow depth area, reduced velocity of water flow and increased ratio of sand bed, etc., can affect the benthic macroinvertebrate communities variously.

  • The ECOM3D is used to study the circulation characteristics and density current from the Sumjin River runoff in the Kwangyang Estuarine System, South Sea, Korea. Annual mean value of $120m^3/s$ was imposed from the Sumjin River. The numerical model results in terms of tidal height, current and salinity field show satisfactory with skill scores over 90%. The current velocity showed the range of 1~2.5 m/s during flood and ebb phases. In particular, very strong flow occur in the narrow Channels of Noryang, Daebang and Changson exceeding over 2.0 m/s. The tidal residual currents in the various locations in the Kwangyang Estuary showed the range of 1~21 cm/s, The density-driven current through the Yeosu and Noryang Channels are about 12 cm/s and 4 cm/s, respectively. The current path through the Yeosu Channel is deflected toward west Bank. Based on budget analysis of the volume flux, the volume flux through the Yeosu Channel and the Noryang Channel were estimated to be 97.4 and $22.1m^3/s$ accounting for the 81.5% and 18.5% of total flux, respectively.

  • Due to the increasing demand to utilize water fronts and water resource effectively, a multi-dimensional model that provides detailed hydraulic characteristics is required in order to improve the decision making process. An EFDC model is a kind of multi-dimension model, and it requires detailed 3D (3-dimensional) terrain in order to simulate the hydraulic characteristics of stream flow. In the case of 3D terrain creation, especially river reaches, measurement resolution and spatial interpolation methods affect the detailed 3D topography which uses input data for EFDC simulation. Such results make hydraulic characteristics to be varied. This study aims to examine EFDC simulation results depending on the 3D topographies derived by separate measurement resolution and spatial interpolation methods. The study area is at the confluence of the Nakdong and Kuemho Rivers and the event rain implemented was Typhoon Ewiniar in 2006. As a result, in the case of the area-elevation curve, the difference by means of the interpolation methods was significant when applying the same measurement resolution, except at 160m resolution. Furthermore, when the measurement resolution was 80m or above, the difference in a cross-section was occurred. Meanwhile, the water level changes between interpolation methods were insignificant by the measurement resolution except when the Kriging method was used for the 160m measurement data. Velocity changes emerged according to the interpolation methods when measurement resolution was 80m or above and the Kriging method resulted in a velocity that had a considerable gap in relation to the results from other methods at a measurement resolution of 160m.
