  • In this study, a study on how to use a fire hydrant as a heat wave reduction facility through hydraulic analysis of the water supply pipe network was conducted. Assuming that the fire hydrant installation point is open for heat wave reduction, the water pressure at each point was derived. And the reduction rate of the temperature according to the hydrant watering was compared with the watering area according to the operation of the watering truck. The watering area according to the opening of the fire hydrant was calculated by deriving the pressure value at the node where the fire hydrant was installed through hydraulic analysis of the water pipe network, and then using the watering radius relational expression according to the pressure value. As a result of applying the proposed methodology to two real city areas, the temperature reduction effect of the watering method by a fire hydrant can be derived lower than the watering method by a watering truck according to the difference in the absolute watering area. However, unlike a watering truck, a fire hydrant does not have a relative restriction on the amount of water supply and is expected to allows continuous divided spraying of the same area.

  • Radial collector wells (RCWs) have been managed by Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC) since 1983, installing 98 wells for agriculture in rural area over the country. Among them, 20 wells were installed upstream of 5 subsurface dams and the remaining were installed regardless of the subsurface dam. Most of RCWs have been developed in 1980s and 1990s, and 83 wells have been passed more than 20 years after construction. The number of horizontal arms for RCWs varies from 9 to 28, with length and diameter being 10~30 m and 65 mm, respectively. The central caisson with an inner diameter of 3.5 m was commonly constructed to a depth of 10 m. The maximum pumping rates in RCWs, which are located at distances of 10 to 1,200 m from the river, are 2,000~10,000 m3/day. RCW has a fundamental problem that reduced pumping capacity and degraded well efficiency, due to the physical and chemical clogging. From the feasibility test for improving RCW performance, specific capacity increased to 67% after rehabilitation. TV logging for RCW horizontal arm shows that near the caisson is more severe clogging. From the results of this study, KRC has established the guidebook for monitoring and improving well efficiency through physical/chemical treatment, well logging, and hydraulic tests and managed RCWs periodically with its rehabilitation methods.

  • Impermeable surfaces such as transportation land uses including roads and parking lots accumulate high heavy metals and particulate matters concentration especially during dry season which worsens the river water quality and distort the water circulation system during rainfall events. Recently, the government has been promoting policies to install Low Impact Development (LID) facilities such as permeable pavements or grass blocks in parking lots or pavements. However, transition of asphalt-paved surfaces to permeable pavement generated asphalt wastes which are detrimental to the environment and has cost implications due to its removal and disposal. Therefore this study was conducted to provide a method of constructing a cost-effective permeable pavement to reduce waste generation and cost. In this study, comparative analysis of the water circulation capacity and economic efficiency of the traditional construction method and new method proposed in this study through the lab-scale experiment. The proposed method was to make holes in existing asphalt pavements, layout geotextile fabric and permeable base media such as sand before compaction. After compaction, layout grass blocks on the compacted base media then layout sand in between each grass blocks before compaction. Apparently, there was no significant difference between the traditional installation method of permeable pavement and the proposed method in this study considering surface runoff, infiltrated volume, stored volume, and rainfall-runoff delay time. The proposed method in this study generated 86% less wastes compared to the traditional installation method and has 70% cost reduction considering asphalt removal and disposal. The construction method proposed in this study yielded similar performance compared to the traditional installation method and water circulation effect, but was proven to be less complicated and economical.

  • This study aims to illuminated landscape of Joseon Dynasty in the end of 19th century when Joseon dynasty began to modernize through the perspective of Westerners. Historical meaning to Western people's landscape records has been preceded. And landscape typology and their perception were analyzed. The results were as follows. First, the Westerners who visited Joseon dynasty at that time were involved in the historical and political situation of the Joseon Dynasty or understood their culture through traveling for so long. And record of Westerners is a significant data to analyze scenery at that time because common contents appear in various books. Second, the landscape of Joseon dynasty that appears in Western records was mainly recorded in small towns and villages, natural environments, scenic sites, historic sites, modern facilities, and cultivated areas. Small towns and villages are mainly mentioned with shabby alleys and dense houses. And natural landscape were identified to mountain landscapes and diverse geomorphological landscape that surrounding vegetation along the coast and rivers. The palaces, fortress and temples were recorded as main objects of scenic sites and historic site. And western-style buildings such as foreign legations and settlements, churches and schools were mentioned in the modernized facilities. A cultivated land was confirmed to be underdeveloped and neglected, but as range of view became wider, it was seen to a peaceful and prosperous rural landscape. Third, Westerners' landscape perception of Joseon dynasty at that time can be deduced from positive or negative perceptions. The residential environment was perceived as negative because it was unsanitary and backward. On the contrary, outstanding natural landscapes, scenic sites and historic sites, and upper class gardens were perceived as positive. For modernized landscapes, positive and negative perceptions were similarly mentioned. Positive perceptions were formed in improvement of civilized landscape, and appeared negative perception because damaged traditional landscapes and heterogeneity.
