The main objective of this study is to determine if the sources of AE in corroded specimens of aluminum could be identified iron the characteristics of the waveform signals recorded during fatigue loading. Coupons of notched 2024-T3 aluminum with or without corrosion (at the notch) were subjected to fatigue loading and the AE signals were recorded using non-resonant, flat, wide-band transducers. The time history and power spectrum of each individual wave signal recorded during fatigue crack growth were examined and classified according to their special characteristics. Five distinct types of signals were observed regardless of specimen condition. The waveform and power spectra were shown to be dependent on specimen condition. During the initial phase of crack growth, the signals obtained in the as-received specimens are most probably due to transgranular cleavage caused by extrusion and intrusion under fatigue loading. In the corroded specimen the signal are probably generated by intergranular cleavage due to embrittlement of grain boundary neat the pitting tip. The need for additional research to further validate these findings is indicated.

We use the finite element method to analyze the seismic design of a liquid storage tank for a polar crane at a nuclear power plant. We obtained the natural frequency and vibration modes by modal analysis, and we evaluated the seismic stability by response spectrum analysis. Furthermore, the seismic analysis of the tank was accomplished by analyzing not only the forces applied to the wall by the sloshing of the liquid, but also the safe-shutdown earthquake condition for the tank. We propose a seismic-design process and a seismic-analysis method for liquid storage tanks based on the commercial finite element analysis program, ANSYS.

Torsional behavior of eccentric structure under seismic leading may cause the stress and/or deformation concentration, which arouse the failure of the structure in an unexpected manner. This study suggests D-R relationship which shows the overall displacement and rotation of the system based on the ultimate displacement capacity of the each lateral load resistant member. Using the suggested D-R relationship and displacement spectrum, the seismic assessment is conducted and verified in comparison with the time history analysis result. Multi-level seismic assessment Is considered which takes multiple seismic hazard levels and respective performance levels into account. Finally, based on the seismic assessment result, seismic rehabilitation process is presented. In this research, two rehabilitation methods are considered. One is done by means of stiffening/strengthening the seismic resistant members, and the other is based on the member ductility. Especially, in the first method, to optimize the rehabilitation result, the rehabilitation problem is modeled as an optimization problem, and solved using BFGS quasi-Newton optimization method.

Unbond brace hysteretic dampers are generally used to prevent or decrease structural damage in building structures subjected to strong earthquake by its energy dissipating hysteretic behavior. In the study, a straightforward design procedure for unbond brace hysteretic dampers was developed. The required amount of equivalent damping to satisfy given performance acceptance criteria was obtained conveniently based on the capacity spectrum method without carrying out time-consuming nonlinear dynamic time history analysis. Then the size of the unbond braces is determined from the required equivalent damping. Parametric study has been performed for the design variables such as natural period, yield strength, the stiffness after the first yield stress of the unbond brace. The procedure was applied to 5-story and 10-story steel frames for verification of the proposed method. According to the earthquake time history analysis results, the maximum displacement of the model structure with unbond braces supplied in accordance with the proposed method corresponds well with the given target displacement.

In this study, tile performance of a passive tuned mass damper (TMD) and a semi-active tuned mass damper (STMD) was evaluated in terms of seismic response control of elastic and inelastic structures under seismic loads. First, elastic displacement spectra were obtained for the damped structures with a passive TMD, which was optimally designed using the frequency and damping ratio presented by previous study, and with a STMD proposed in this study. The displacement spectra confirm that STMD provides much better control performance than passive md with less stroke. Also, the robustness or the TMD was evaluated by off-tuning the frequency of the TMD to that of the structure. Finally, numerical analyses were conducted for an inelastic structure of which hysteresis was described by Bouc-Wen model and the results indicated that the performance of the passive TMD of which design parameters were optimized for a elastic structure considerably deteriorated when the hysteretic portion or the structural responses increased, while the STMD showed about 15-40% more response reduction than the TMD.

Recently, the offshore structures are increasingly constructed to explore the natural resources. These offshore structures are to be designed to resist the repetitive wave forces. A probabilistic method for the fatigue analysis of offshore concrete structures is presented in this study. The present spectral fatigue analysis calculates wave forces first and then the transfer functions for unit waves from which stress spectra are determined. The calculated fatigue stresses may then be used to evaluate the fatigue damage of concrete structures. A simplified model for the estimation of fatigue damage of the structures, which employs only the probabilistic moments of the peak stress distribution without direct integration, is also proposed. The present study allows more realistic fatigue analysis of offshore concrete structures.
In this study, seismic design in pipeline of pressurized water supply system of water extinguishing system has been carried out. This study described a generation of artificial earthquake wave compatible with seismic design spectrum, and also determined equivalent static loads to analyzed the response spectra acceleration by the simulated earthquake motion. This study constructed powerful engineering base for seismic design, and presented equivalent static analysis method for seismic design of water and gas extinguishing piping system. Also, this study readied basis that can apply seismic design and performance estimation of fire fighting system as well as pipeline of water extinguishing system from result of this research. Hereafter, if additional research by earthquake magnitude and ground kind is approached, reliance elevation, safety raising and performance based design of fire fighting system see to achieve.

It is a general agreement that exact statistical solutions can be found by a Monte Carlo technique. Due to difficulties, however, in the numerical generation of random fields, which satisfy not only the probabilistic distribution but the spectral characteristics as well, it is recognized as relatively difficult to find an exact response variability of a structural response. In this study, recognizing that the random field assumes a constant over the domain under consideration when the correlation distance tends to infinity, a semi-theoretical solution of response variability is proposed for general structures. In this procedure, the probability density function is directly used. It is particularly noteworthy that the proposed methodology provides response variability for virtually any type of probability density function, and has capability of considering correlations between multiple random variables.

Before cables are constructed, tower of suspension bridge is behaved as a cantilever type. Buffeting occured by unsteady loading of the tower due to velocity fluctuation in the oncoming flow has a wind velocity consistent with fundamental frequency of the tower and may give rise to large response by the tower resonance. To reduce the dynamic response by buffeting, the behavior of tower with TMD(Tuned Mass Damper) has studied using finite element method in time domain. The buffeting was obtained by transforming the velocity spectrum in frequency domain to random variable in certain time domain. The most probable maximum displacement which can be occured during the time interval was obtained using peak factor. The optimum location for TMD installation and TMD specification were decided by parametric study. Also, the effect of vibration control about various wind velocity was studied by the TMD which has optimum specification and location.

The necessity and importance of fatigue failure to variable load has been appreciated as the structural design technique develops and use of high tensile steel is increasing. This is much more appreciated for a large ship such as VLCC. The rigorous fatigue analysis and safety assessment should be, hence, carried out at the design stage to avoid the possibility of fatigue failure and to achieve the design result having a sufficient structural safety to fatigue strength. This paper deals with an efficient spectral fatigue analysis of ship structures by introducing the concept of stress influence coefficient. In the process included are probabilistic loading analysis, evaluation of long-term distribution of stress range and estimation of fatigue life applying the spectral fatigue analysis. An integrated computer program has been developed in which reliability analysis to fatigue strength is also included and has been applied to D/H VLCC.
