This paper briefly describes the fundamental strategies--path-tracing, pin-pointing, and path-switching--in the computational elastic bifurcation theory of geometrically non-linear single-load-parameter conservative elastic spatial structures. The stability points in the non-linear elasticity may be classified into limit points and bifurcation points. For the limit points, the path tracing scheme that successively computes the regular equilibrium points on the equilibrium path, and the pinpointing scheme that precisely locates the singular equilibrium points were sufficient for the computational stability analysis. For the bifurcation points, however, a specific procedure for path-switching was also necessary to detect the branching paths to be traced in the post-buckling region. After the introduction, a general theory of elastic stability based on the energy concept was given. Then path tracing, an indirect method of detecting multiple bifurcation points, and path switching strategies were described. Next, some numerical examples of bifurcation analysis were carried out for a trussed stardome, and a pin-supported plane circular arch was described. Finally, concluding remarks were given.

The plane elastostatic boundary value problem with the sharp V-notched singularity is formulated by a contour integral method for determining numerically the stress intensity factors. The integral formula is based on Somigliana type of reciprocal work in terms of displacement and traction vectors on the plate boundary. The characteristic singular solutions can be identified on the basis of traction free boundary conditions of two radial notch edges. Two numerical example examples are treated in detail; a symmetric mode-I type of notched plate with various interior angles and a mixed mode type of cantilever subjected to end shear.
When a non-persistent joint system is formed in a large-scale rock slope, slope failure may occur due to presence of a the stepped sliding surface. Such a surface can be divided into joint-to-joint sliding surfaces or joint-to-rock bridge sliding surfaces. In the latter case, the rock bridge provides shear resistance parallel to the joint and tensile resistance perpendicular to the joint. The load of the sliding rock can lead to failure of the rock bridge, thereby connecting the two joints at each ends of the bridge and resulting in step-path failure of the slope. If each rock bridge on a slope has the same length, the tensile strength is lower than the shear strength, resulting in the rock bridges oriented perpendicular to the joint being more prone to failure. In addition, the smaller the ratio of discontinuity spacing to length, the greater the likelihood of step-path failure. To assess the risk of stepped sliding on a rock slope with non-persistent joints, stability analysis can be performed using limit equilibrium analysis or numerical analysis. This involves constructing a step-path failure surface through a systematic discontinuity survey and analysis.
In this study, prediction of soil behavior under vacuum preloading with vertical drain is explored on the basis of numerical models and toe results were compared with field measurements. Reasonable prediction of the time rate of settlements and pore pressure dissipation under vacuum preloading is the maj or concern. The conventional method for vatsuum preloading is based on modeling vacuum preloading as surcharge loading for the consolidation analysis. However, this modeling may violate the real behavior of soils under vacuum loading since the total stress in the analysis varies due to the modeled surcharge loading whereas in'.situ total stress of soils under vacuum loading is constant. In this study a new method is suggested. Instead of modeling vacuum loading as surcharge loading, negative hydraulic head is applied at the surface drain boundary to simulate the vacuum preloading. Comparisons of predictions and field measurements of soil behavior under vatsuum preloading are presented and the usefulness of the new modeling technique is demonstrated.
In this study, each top-down load test and bi-directional load test has been performed on the 480mm diameter of two rock socketed drilled shafts, which are located next to each other, and the results have been compared. The result shows that the settlement from the equivalent load-settlement curve of bi-directional load test is smaller than one from top-down load test, because elastic is not considered in equivalent load-settlement curve of bi-directional load test. Therefore elastic shortening should be considered to obtain appropriate equivalent load-settlement curve. Three existing methods used to obtain equivalent load-settlement curve with consideration of elastic shortening has been compared with the result of top-down load test. The result shows that those existing methods are sufficiently applicable to the design. In addition, result of comparison between top-down load test and bi-directional load test shows that bi-directional load test was found to overestimate bearing capacity because it does not consider pile body failure.

This paper presents an experimental evaluation of wandering effect on asphalt concrete pavement responses. A laser-based wandering system has been developed and its performance is verified under various field conditions. The portable wandering system composed of two laser sensors with Position Sensitive Devices can allow one to measure the distance between laser sensors and tire edges of moving vehicle. Therefore, lateral position of each wheel on the pavement can be determined in a real time manner. Pavement responses due to different loading paths are investigated using a roll over test which is carried out on one of asphalt surfaced pavements in the Korea Highway Corporation test road. The pavement section (A5) consists of 5 cm thick surface course; 7 cm intermediate course; and 18 mm base course, and is heavily instrumented with strain gauges, vertical soil pressure cells and thermo-couples. From the center of wheel paths, seven equally-spaced lateral loading paths are carefully selected over an 140 cm wandering zone. Test results show that lateral horizontal strains in both surface and intermediate courses are mostly compressive right under the loading path and tensile strains start to develop as the loading offset becomes 40 cm from the wheel path. The development of the vertical stresses in the top layers of subbase and anti-frost is found to be minimal once the loading offset becomes 50 cm.

In this paper a new equivalent static analysis method of dynamic behavior during progressive collapse is presented. The proposed analysis method uses the equivalent nodal load for the element stiffness which represents the dynamic behavior influence caused by the deletion of elements during progressive collapse analysis. The proposed analysis method improves the efficiency of progressive collapse analysis haying the iterative characteristic because the inverse of the structural stiffness matrix is roused in the reanalysis. By comparing the results obtained by this analysis method with those of GSA code analysis and time history analysis, it is shown that the results obtained by this analysis method more closely approach to those of time history analysis than by GSA code analysis.

In this study, a penalty method effective for the case that has no snap-back phenomenon, is proposed and an adaptive method which choose the penalty method or Riks' type method, is suggested for the case of snap-back problem. And for the case that loads are applied to one or more points of a structure, the Riks' method is applied in general, but under certain condition choice of new incremental load parameter is suggested to accelerate the convergence rate. Finally, for the case that displacements of a structure are controlled at one or more points Riks' type method is proposed. In this case, the proposed method is applied in general but under certain condition it is recommended to choose other incremental displacement parameter to eliminate probable divergence. Five examples are analysed and compared with the result of published literature.

This paper presents a new nonlinear analysis algorithm, that is, adaptive Newton-Raphson iteration method, The presented algorithm is based on the existing Newton-Raphson method, and the concept of it can be summarized as calculating the equivalent load for stiffness(ELS) and adapting this to the initial global stiffness matrix which has already been calculated and saved in initial analysis and finally calculating the correction displacements for the nonlinear analysis, The key characteristics of the proposed algorithm is that it calculates the inverse matrix of the global stiffness matrix only once irresponsive of the number of load steps. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm depends on the ratio of the active Dofs - the Dofs which are directly connected to the members of which the element stiffness are changed - to the total Dofs, and based on this ratio by using the proposed algorithm as a complementary method to the existing algorithm the efficiency of the nonlinear analysis can be improved dramatically.
