  • This study presents an effective optimal technique to control quantitatively lateral drift for tall steel braced frames subject to horizontal loads. In this paper, the displacement sensitivity depending on behavior characteristics of steel braced frames is established, and also the approximation concept that has the generality of the mathematical programming and can efficiently solve large scale problems is introduced. Especially, the commercially available standard steel sections are used for the discrete selection of member sizes. Three types of 12-story braced frames and a 30-story braced framework are presented to illustrate the features of the quantitative lateral drift control technique proposed in this study.

  • The volume control method which utilize a pressure node added into a finite shell element can overcome the drawbacks of conventional load control method and displacement control method. In this study, an improved volume control method is introduced for effective analysis of path-dependent behaviors of RC columns subjected to lateral cyclic loading or reversed cyclic loading along with compressive loading. RC shell structures and RC hollow columns are analyzed by discretizing the structures with layered shell elements and by applying in-plane two dimensional constitutive equations for concrete layers and reinforcement layers of the shell elements. The so-called path dependent volume control method as a finite element analysis technique is verified by comparing analysis results with other data including experimental results. The validity and applicability of the modeling technique is also confirmed by the comparison.

  • In this study, an assessment is made for the helicopter vibration reduction of composite rotor blades using an active twist control concept. The piezoceramic shear actuation mechanism along with elastic couplings of composite blades is used for vibration reduction. The rotor blades are modeled as composite box-beams with actuator layers bonded on the outer surfaces of the thin-walled section. The governing equations of motion for helicopter blades are obtained using Hamilton's principle. A time domain unsteady aerodynamic theory with free wake model is used to obtain the airloads. Various rotor configurations with different elastic couplings with appropriate actuator placement are used to investigate the hub vibration characteristics. Numerical results show that a substantial reduction of $N_b$/rev hub vibration can be achieved using the optimal control algorithm.

  • The researches on the early-aged concrete hydration process and the techniques for the early-aged concrete crack control mainly have been focused and developed on the massive concretes in both experimental and numerical studies. However, those researches for relatively thin members such as the upper slab of the reinforced concrete rahmen bridge have nearly been attempted. In this study, a designing technique for crack controlling in the thin members of the early-aged reinforced concrete rahmen bridges based on measured temperature history, strength revelation model and sinkage model is proposed. A method of calculating the reinforcing bar area for crack controlling is also proposed and it is found that the distributing bars under the design loads become the main reinforcing bars in the temperature stress analysis of the early-aged reinforced concrete rahmen bridges. It is shown that the proposed analysis technique is able to use the design of crack control for the early-aged reinforced concrete rahmen bridge.

  • Drift design methods using resizing algorithms have been presented as a practical drift design method since the resizing algorithms proposed easily find drift contribution of each member, called member displacement participation factor, to lateral drift to be designed without calculation of sensitivity coefficient or re-analysis. Weight of material to be redistributed for minimization of the lateral drift is determined according to the member displacement participation factors. However, resizing algorithms based on energy theorem must consider loading conditions because they have different displacement contribution according to different loading conditions. Furthermore, to improve practicality of resizing algorithms, structural member grouping is required in application of resizing algorithms to drift control of high-rise buildings. In this study, three resizing algorithms on considering load condition and structural member grouping are developed and applied to drift design of a 20-story steel-frame shear-wall structure and a 50-story frame shear-wall system with outriggers.

  • This paper presents the equivalent nodal load for the element stiffness which represents the influence of the stiffness change such as the addition of elements, the deletion of elements, and/or the partial change of element stiffness. The reanalysis of structure using the equivalent load improves the efficiency very much because the inverse of the structural stiffness matrix, which needs a large amount of computation to calculate, is reused in the reanalysis. In this paper, the concept of the equivalent load for the element stiffness is described and some numerical examples are provided to verify it.

  • In this study, the possibility of seismic response control of semi-active tuned mass damper (TMD) for spatial structures has been investigated. To this end, an arch structure was used as an example structure because it has primary characteristics of spatial structures and it is a comparatively simple structure. A TMD and semi-active TMD were applied to the example arch structure and the seismic control performance of them were evaluated based on the numerical simulation. In order to regulate the damping force of the semi-active TMD, groundhook control algorithm, which is widely used for semi-active control, was used. El Centro (1940) and Northridge (1994) earthquakes and harmonic ground motion were used for performance evaluation of passive TMD and semi-active TMD. Based on the analytical results, the passive TMD could effectively reduce the seismic responses of the arch structure and it has been shown that the semi-active TMD more effectively decreased the dynamic responses of the arch structure compared to the passive TMD with respect to all the excitations used in this study.
