  • Pipeline is very important infrastructure which is directly related to our daily life. Nevertheless, it is not considered significantly unless it breaks. As most pipelines are buried at a certain depth from the surface of road pavement in urban areas, they are subjected to traffic load. This paper presents the performance of buried concrete pipe under heavy traffic load. Hence, one of the major factors affecting their performance is burial depth. To consider this factor, the ratio of burial depth (H) to diameter of pipe (D) was defined as a key variable. The integrity of buried concrete pipe was investigated with two cases of ratio of burial depth to pipe diameter (H/D=2 and H/D=4). The results provide the limit burial depth to ensure the soundness of buried concrete pipe subjected to heavy traffic load, and more economical design is anticipated with the results.

  • This paper presents the investigation of dynamic behavior of a single pile in dry sand based on 1g shaking table tests. The natural frequency of soil-pile system was measured, and then a range of loading frequency was determined based on the natural frequency. Additionally, the studies were performed by controlling loading accelerations, pile head mass and connectivity conditions between pile and cap. Based on the results obtained, relatively larger pile head displacement and bending moment occur when the loading frequency is larger than the natural frequency of soil-pile system. However, the slope of the p-y curve is smaller in the similar loading frequency. Also, it was found that inertia force like input acceleration and pile head mass, and relation of the natural frequency of soil-pile system and input frequency have a great influence on the slope of dynamic p-y curve, while pile head conditions don't.

  • Strength and failure of adhesively bonded carbon composite-to-aluminum single-lap joints were studied by experiment. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of various parameters such as curing pressure for bonding, overlap lengths, and adherend thickness on the failure loads and modes of the bonded Joints with dissimilar materials. Experimental results show that the bonding pressure for composite-to-aluminum dissimilar materials should be 4 atm at the lowest. Failure load of the joints increases as the overlap length increases, but the strength (failure load divided by bonded area) decreases rapidly after the overlap width-to-length ratio is greater than 1. When the adherend thickness increase to double, bonding strength increase $12{\sim}55%$. Major failure mode of the joints is the delamination in the composite laminate and the location of delamination goes deeper into the laminates as the bonding pressure and overlap length increase.

  • This paper mainly deals with the performance evaluation of 33 asphalt sections of Korea Expressway Corporation Test Road (KECTR) during the past four years. Since the construction of the KECTR in December 2002, key performance indicators of asphalt pavements have been collected five times with an Automatic Road Analyzer (ARAN), and have been analyzed for permanent deformation, surface distress, and road roughness. Linear viscoelastic characteristics of four dense graded HMAs used in KECTR were investigated with a series of complex modulus test. The effect of air void in HMAs on dynamic modulus was investigate at two air void contents for a surface course HMA (19 mm Nominal Maximum Size of Aggregate). Layer densification due to traffic was estimated from air void contents of field cored samples, and was correlated with pavement distresses and performances. One of findings of this study was that both permanent deformation and cracking were suspectible to pavement temperatures, rather than traffic. However, it was found that road roughness was mostly affected by traffic loading.

  • The load distribution and deformation of pile subjected to axial loads are evaluated by a load-transfer method. The emphasis is on quantifying the effect of coupled soil resistance that is closely related to the ratio of pile diameter to soil modulus $(D/E_s)$ and the ratio of total shaft resistance against total applied load $(R_s/Q)$, in rock-socketed drilled shafts using the coupled load-transfer method. The proposed analytical method that takes into account the soil coupling effect was developed using a modified Mindlin's point load solution. Through comparisons with field case studies, it was found that the proposed method in the present study estimated reasonable load transfer behavior of pile and coupling effects due to the transfer of shaft shear loading, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load deflections of drilled shafts.

  • Among a variety of influencing components, time-variant seepage and long-term underground motion are important to understand the abnormal behavior of tunnels. Excessiveness of these two components could be the direct cause of severe damage on tunnels, however, it is not easy to quantify the effect of these on the behavior of tunnels. These parameters can be estimated by using inverse methods once the appropriate relationship between inputs and results is clarified. Various inverse methods or parameter estimation techniques such as artificial neural network and least square method can be used depending on the characteristics of given problems. Numerical analyses, experiments, or monitoring results are frequently used to prepare a set of inputs and results to establish the back analysis models. In this study, a back analysis method has been developed to estimate geotechnically hard-to-known parameters such as permeability of tunnel filter, underground water table, long-term rock mass load, size of damaged zone associated with seepage and long-term underground motion. The artificial neural network technique is adopted and the numerical models developed in the first part are used to prepare a set of data for learning process. Tunnel behavior, especially the displacements of the lining, has been exclusively investigated for the back analysis.

  • This paper describes the finite element analysis and die design change of cold heading punching process to increase the cold forging tool life and reduce the tool wear and stress concentration. Through this study, the optimization of punch tool design has been studied by an analysis of tool stress and wear distribution to improve the tool life. Plastic deformation analysis was carried out in order to understand the cold heading process between tool and workpiece stress distribution. Cold heading punch die design was set up to each process with different four types analysis progressing, the cold heading punch dies shapes with combination of point angle and punch edge corner radius shapes of cold forging dies, punch die material properties and frictional coefficient. The design parameters of point angle and corner radius of punch die geometry, die material properties and frictional coefficient were selected to apply optimization with the DoE (design of experiment) and Taguchi method. DoE and Taguchi method was performed to optimize the cold heading punch die design parameters optimization for bolt head cold forging process, it was possible to expect an reduce the cold heading punch die wear to the 37 % compared with current using cold heading punch in the shop floor.

  • The current domestic design criteria of live load employs DL-24 load and DB-24 load. Particularly for long span bridges above 45meters, DL-24 load is forced to apply and design them, since the shearing force and the moment of DL-24 load appears more dominate than those of DB-24. But it appeared that this DL-24 load didn't meet the vehicles traveling load, which affected bridges in real use. Hence this paper defined ML-24 load similar to the load applied to real bridges and also defined a new live load model, RL-24 load, after adjusting the existing DL-24 load, which doesn't meet the moment and the shearing force of ML-24. As the result of applying and reviewing RL-24 load to simple bridges of span of 45~60m, the results satisfying both the moment and the shearing force applied to bridges in real use by traveling load were attained. Besides, the applicability of it was examined in comparison with live load models of home and abroad.

  • In this paper the fuzzy extension for the classical engineering mechanics problems is studied. The governing differential equation is derived for the buckling loads of the columns with uncertain mediums: the their own weight and the flexural rigidity. The columns with one typical end constraint(hinged1 clarnped/free) and the other finite rotational spring with fuzzy constant are considered in numerical examples. The vertex method is used to evaluate the fuzzy functions. The Runge-Kutta method and Determinant Search method are used to solve the differential equation and determine the buckling loads, respectively. The membership functions of the buckling load are calculated. The index of fuzziness to quantitatively describe the propagation of fuzziness is defined. According to the fuzziness of governing factors, the varlation of index of fuzziness for buckling load is investigated, and the sensitivity for the end constraints is analyzed.
