  • Neural Networks(NNs) are applied for solving a wide variety of nonlinear problems in several areas, such as image processing, pattern recognition etc. Although NN can be simulated by using software, many potential NN applications required real-time processing. Thus they need to be implemented as hardware. The hardware implementation of multi-layer perceptrons(MLPs) in several kind of NNs usually uses a fixed-point arithmetic due to a simple logic operation and a shorter processing time compared to the floating-point arithmetic. However, the fixed-point arithmetic-based MLP has a drawback which is not able to apply the MLP software that use floating-point arithmetic. We propose a design method for MLPs which has the floating-point arithmetic-based fully-pipelining architecture. It has a processing speed that is proportional to the number of the hidden nodes. The number of input and output nodes of MLPs are generally constrained by given problems, but the number of hidden nodes can be optimized by user experiences. Thus our design method is using optimized number of hidden nodes in order to improve the processing speed, especially in field of a repeated processing such as image processing, pattern recognition, etc.

  • Today, the demand of image acquisition systems grows as the multimedia applications go on increasing greatly. Among the systems, film scanner is one of the systems, which can acquire high quality and high resolution images. However due to the nonlinear characteristic of the light source and sensor, colors of the original film image do not correspond to the colors of the scanned image. Therefore color correction mr the scanned digital image is essential in the film scanner. In this paper, polynomial regression method is applied for the color correction to CIE $L^{*}$ $a^{*}$ $b^{*}$ color model data converted from RGB color model data. A1so a film scanner hardware with 12 bit color resolution for each R, G, B and 2400 dpi was implemented by using TMS320C32 DSP chip and high resolution line sensor. An experimental result shows that the average color difference ($\Delta$ $E^{*}$$_{ab}$ ) is reduced from13.48 to 8.46.6.6.6.6.

  • A robotically assisted field material handling system designed for loading and unloading of a planar pallet with a forklift in unstructured field environment is presented. The system uses combined acoustic/visual sensing data to define the position/orientation of the pallet and to determine the specific locations of the two slots of the pallet, so that the forklift can move close to the slot and engage it for transport. In order to reduce the complexity of the material handling operation, we have developed a method based on the integration of 2-D range data of Poraloid ultrasonic sensor along with 2-D visual data of an optical camera. Data obtained from the two separate sources complements each other and is used in an efficient algorithm to control this robotically assisted field material handling system . Range data obtained from two linear scannings is used to determine the pan and tilt angles of a pallet using least mean square method. Then 2-D visual data is used to determine the swing angle and engagement location of a pallet by using edge detection and Hough transform techniques. The limitations of the pan and tilt orientation to be determined arc discussed. The system developed is evaluated through the hardware and software implementation. The experimental results are presented.

  • In this paper, we propose a high speed block turbo code decoding algorithm and an efficient hardware architecture. The multimedia wireless data communication systems need channel codes which have the high-performance error correcting capabilities. Block turbo codes support variable code rates and packet sizes, and show a high performance due to a soft decision iteration decoding of turbo codes. However, block turbo codes have a long decoding time because of the iteration decoding and a complicated extrinsic information operation. The proposed algorithm using the threshold that represents a channel information reduces the long decoding time. After the threshold is decided by a simulation result, the proposed algorithm eliminates the calculation for the bits which have a good channel information and assigns a high reliability value to the bits. The threshold is decided by the absolute mean and the standard deviation of a LLR(Log Likelihood Ratio) in consideration that the LLR distribution is a gaussian one. Also, the proposed algorithm assigns '1', the highest reliable value, to those bits. The hardware design result using verilog HDL reduces a decoding time about 30% in comparison with conventional algorithm, and includes about 20K logic gate and 32Kbit memory sizes.

  • Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of most developing countries. In these countries, agriculture or farming is mostly done manually with little integration of machinery, intelligent systems and data monitoring. Irrigation is an essential process that directly influences crop production. The fluctuating amount of rainfall per year has led to the adoption of irrigation systems in most farms. The absence of smart sensors, monitoring methods and control, has led to low harvests and draining water sources. In this research paper, we introduce a 433 MHz Radio Frequency and 2G based Smart Irrigation Meter System and a water prepayment system for rural areas of Tanzania with no reliable internet coverage. Specifically, Ngurudoto area in Arusha region where it will be used as a case study for data collection. The proposed system is hybrid, comprising of both weather data (evapotranspiration) and soil moisture data. The architecture of the system has on-site weather measurement controllers, soil moisture sensors buried on the ground, water flow sensors, a solenoid valve, and a prepayment system. To achieve high precision in linear and nonlinear regression and to improve classification and prediction, this work cascades a Dynamic Regression Algorithm and Naïve Bayes algorithm.
