  • The diet composition of bullet mackerel, Auxis rochei was studied using 200 specimens collected from December 2013 to May 2014 in the coastal waters of Iloilo, Philippines. The size of A. rochei ranged from 11.1 to 31.2 cm in fork length (FL). A. rochei was epipelagic feeder that consumed mainly fishes. In addition, A. rochei consumed shrimps, copepods, crab larvae, amphipods and cephalopods. The diet also included small quantities of stomatopods, bivalves, and ostracods. Also, analysis of the prey-specific abundance against the frequency of occurrence shows that A. rochei have a narrow food niche, and are specialized feeder with fish as their dominant prey. Although fishes were the primary in food consumed by all size class. The fishes gradually increased with body size.

  • Fish killing dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides has been separated into four genetically differentiated subpopulations globally based on large-subunit (LSU) ribosomal RNA gene, and two subpopulations have been found in the South Sea, Korea. In this study, distributions of the East Asia and Philippines ribotypes were surveyed in the South Sea for 3 years (2014~2016) using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). The East Asia ribotype was detected in all sampling stations of the South Sea (Tongyeong~Wando) by 40~100% positives for 2014~2016, whereas the Philippines ribotype was detected in some areas of Tongyeong~Goheung by 1~2% positives for only 2016 when the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) was particularly strengthened. These results indicate that the East Asia ribotype is the dominant subpopulation in the South Sea, also some of C. polykrikoides swimming cells might be transported from offshore to the South Sea via TWC.

  • With increasing international labour in Korea, the perspective of foreign workers' maintenance and changes of origin while living and working overseas provides a new angle for leadership research. For the purpose to investigate the effect of leadership on the group of foreign workers, this study targeted Filipino workers in U and G city and explored whether authentic leadership predicts foreign workers' work engagement and retainment through the potential intervening effect of interpersonal trust. The empirical study utilized SPSS, and results proved that authentic leadership has no significant relationship to foreign Filipino workers' work engagement directly, but authentic leadership showed a negative effect on Filipino workers' turnover intention. The full mediation effect of interpersonal trust proves the value and importance of establishing trust relationships in retaining foreign workers.

  • A statistical analysis of 9,771 non-glutinous rice in breeding line germplasm collected from Korea (2,836), China (2,136), Japan (1,219), and the Philippines (1,213) was conducted using normal distribution, variability index value (VIV), analysis of variation (ANOVA) and Ducan's multiple range test (DMRT) based on the data obtained from NIRS analysis. According to the normal distribution, the average protein content was 7.9%, and non-glutinous rice ranging over 10% amylose had 23.6% average content. Most resources were between 5.3 and 10.5% in protein content, and 15.7 and 31.5% in amylose content. The VIV was 0.54 for protein, and 0.83 for amylose. The average amylose content was 25.18%, 24.54%, 22.08%, and 21.47% in Filipino, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese resources, respectively, wheereas the average protein content was found to be 8.19%, 7.79%, 7.58%, and 7.42% in Filipino, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese resources, respectively. The ANOVA of amylose and protein content showed significant differences at the level of 0.01. The F-test value was 412.2 for amylose content, and 108.4 for protein when compared with the critical value of 3.78. The DMRT of amylose and protein content showed significant differences (p<0.01) among resources from different countries. The Filipino resources had the highest level of amylose and protein content, whereas; the lowest level of amylose and protein content were found in Japanese when compared with resources of other origins. These results are recommended as helpful materials in the field of breeding.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze contagion in Asian foreign exchange markets using Extreme Value Theory and Copula. Our application deals with asymptotic dependence of daily exchange rate return for a sample of eight countries over period 1997.1.1-2005.4.13. The empirical results are summarized as follows. Firstly, Gumbel Copula is a good model to our data according to the value of AIC. Secondly, the extremal dependence between East Asian crisis countries became lower in the post crisis period than the crisis period. Thirdly, It seemed that high extremal dependence exists between East Asian countries with Singapore. Fourthly, the tail dependence between Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippine became higher in the crisis period than the total period and post crisis period. Fifthly, the fact that the extremal dependence between Korea and Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippine did not increase during the Asian Financial Crisis showed that the contagion effect was not the reason of the Korea's Fiancial Crisis. Sixthly, the extremal dependence between Asian exchange markets was not very high while comparing with the European exchange markets.

  • This article aims to reveal the ways in which a "space of difference" is produced and interpret the space as a heterotopic space, drawing the case of Filipino elderly care-givers in Israel. The in-betweens and temporariness of the migrants'experiences in the Israeli society lead to the creation of a heterotopic space. Paying attention to their particular life rhythm as live-in care-givers, namely weekdays-workplace and weekend-flat, this article explores how the migrant care-givers build their own society through a variety of spatial practices and multiple social relations based on the flat. In making the flat a perfect form of a lifestyle for their own, the migrants inscribe their presence in the flat in unique ways for different purposes, in a way different to that which surrounds it. However, the structure of flat not only signifies the migrants' marginality but also reflects the challenging position. The flat has functions in relation to all other space that remains, even if such connection often creates effects of contrast and difference. In this light, the flat is not merely an alienated and circumscibed exotic migrant enclave but a heterotopic space which is dynamically constructed in relation to other sites in the wider societal order.

  • Laguna Lake is the largest inland fresh water body in the Philippines. It primarily serves as a site for aquaculture, hydropower, transportation, and water supply industries. Due to Laguna Lake's diverse functionalities, competition among water users became prominent. Water quality began to deteriorate due to various pollutant contributions in this process, thereby affecting the soundness of the aquatic ecosystem. This study was conducted to evaluate the current water quality management policy from the viewpoint of ecological environment through the evaluation of the water quality of Laguna Lake. Concentrations of water pollutants such as ammonia ($NH_3$), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chloride ($Cl^-$), pH, and total suspended solids (TSS) exceeded the water quality standards of the Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The water quality of the lake was also affected by the pollutant load due to agriculture and urban stormwater runoff in the watershed. The salinity and contaminated water from Pasig River also affected the water quality of Laguna Lake. Long-term water quality analysis showed that the water quality of Laguna Lake is also influenced by rainfall-related seasonal variations. The results of the water quality analysis of Laguna Lake indicated that the environmental management techniques of the Philippines should be changed from the conventional water management into an integrated watershed management scheme in the future. It is therefore necessary to study and introduce advanced watershed management measures in the Philippines based from the policies of other developed countries.

  • The purpose of this article is to verify whether recent political change in Thailand and the Philippines is temporarily shown "democratic recession" or "returning to authoritarianism". For the purpose this research establishes three propositions based on previous academic researches of political change. The is to verify characteristics of liberal democracy based on democratic procedures and institutions as well as civilian control over the military. The is to analyze the characteristics of authoritarianism such as the control over individual freedom and rights, concentration of power, and populist ruling behavior contrary to constitutionalism. The last one, , is to check either the coincidence or discrepancy between democratic institutions and popular understanding of democracy during democratic transitions. The finding through testing those propositions is that recent political change in two countries is more likely "returing to authoritarianism" rather than provisional "democratic recession". Implications of the finding has two aspects. One is that the only change in democratic procedures and institutions including the competition among political parties and peaceful change of governments are not enough to ensure a successful transition to liberal democracy. The other is that a half-democracy lacking the change of popular understanding and belief toward democracy as well as democratic practices cannot survive long enough. These are confirmed through this study on the cases of Thailand and the Philippines.
