  • For the rational design of welded joint, it is needed to assess repeatedly the fatigue life of the joint with various dimensions and welding conditions. In this paper, an automation of repeated process of fatigue life assessment for welded cruciform joint was studied. The process is related to stress analysis in vicinity of weld-toe and fatigue life assessment based on analyzed stress distribution. With the change of design condition including dimensions and/or welding heat input, the above two works have to be performed. Using the commercial tool for system integration, ModelCenter, an automation of the repeated process for welded cruciform joint based on 2D modeling was achieved. In this automation system, data exchanges between programs regardless of commercial or in-house one work well, and parametric studies for optimal design can be performed.

  • The fatigue strength of welded joint is influenced by the welding residual stress which is relaxed depending on local stress distributed in vicinity of stress raisers, eg. under cut, overlap and blow hole. To evaluate its fatigue life the geometry of the stress raisers and the welding residual stress should be taken into account. The several methods based on notch strain approach have been proposed in order to consider the two factors above mentioned. These methods, however, have shown considerable differences between analytical and experimental results. It is due to the fact that the amount of the relaxed welding residual stress evaluated by the cyclic stress-strain relationship do not correspond with that occurred in reality. In this paper the residual stress relaxation model based on experimental results was used in order to reduce the discrepancy of the estimated amount of the relaxed welding residual stress. Under an assumption of the superimposition of the relaxed welding residual stress and the local stress, a modified notch strain approach was proposed and verified to the cruciform welded joint.

  • The fatigue test of the fillet weldments was executed with different beveling angles and porosities. The beveling angles of $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $55^{\circ}$ were compared with fatigue lives. After the fillet weldment failure, the porosities which found at the fractured surface were observed to account the effect on fatigue life. Finite element analysis was performed to correlate the fatigue strength and the sizes and the locations of porosities. The stress-strain field was severely affected by the length of notch and the sizes and locations of porosities. Based on the quantitative analysis of porosity effect, the total volume of porosities was a key factor for fatigue strength of the fillet weldment.

  • As is well appreciated, welding is the most important fundamental process in manufacturing marine structures. However, weld-induced deformation is inevitable because of the non-uniform distribution of temperature during welding. The deformation caused by welding is one of the principal obstacles in enhancing the productivity in the manufacturing procedure for marine structures. This should be much more seriously considered in the case of the thin blocks found in a ship with multi-deck structures. This paper is concerned with the deformation control of thin panel blocks by applying intermittent welding to fillet welding. In order to investigate the quantitative effect of the intermittent welding, a thermo elasto-plastic analysis was carried out with various welding pitches and plate thicknesses. Welding tests were also carried out to show the validity of the present thermo-elasto-plastic analysis. Numerical analysis results showed good agreement with those of the welding tests. As far as the present numerical results are concerned, it has been seen that a more than 50% reduction in angular distortion can be achieved by applying the intermittent welding because of the low heat input.

  • Fatigue life of welded joints is governed by the propagation of multiple collinear surface cracks distributed randomly along weld toe. These cracks propagate under the mechanisms of mutual interaction and coalescence of the adjacent two cracks. To estimate the fatigue life, its influences on the above two mechanisms should be taken into account, which appear through the stress intensity factors disturbed mutually. However, it is difficult to calculate the stress intensity factors of the multiple surface cracks located in vicinity of weld toe due to its geometrical complexity. They are calculated normally by using the Μk-factors, but such Mk-factors are very rare in literature. In this study, the Μ$textsc{k}$-factors were obtained from a parametric study on crack length and depth, for which a finite element method is used. A fatigue test for a cruciform welded Joint was conducted and the fatigue life of the tested specimen was estimated using the present method with the informations obtained from the test, such as the number, size, and locations of the cracks. The estimated and measured fatigue life showed a good agreement.

  • Welding distortion is more serious problem than any other problems caused by welding process, especially, in the heavy-industrial place. These welding distortions are caused by nonuniform heating and cooling of metal during and after welding operations. And these distortion quantities are must be known to worker in production line because distorions are important role in assembling part. Therefore an analytical model to explain and predict the welding distortion are needed. A numerical analysis of welding distortion which is inelastic behavior of weldment would require the three dimensional calculation. But computing time and memory would be very large, and the resulting cost might be unacceptable. Therefore we use a numerical technique for two dimensional analysis in the section normal to the weld direction of weldment under an assumption of quasi-stationary conditions. But the result of the calculation under two dimensional(plane strain) assumption was not satisfied as compared with experimental result. This paper proposed a technique for analysing the welding angular distortion by using a constraint boundary condition on the two dimensional finite element model. The simulation results revealed that the constraint boundary model could more reasonably describe the welding distortion than the plane strain model did.

  • This study investigates the fatigue lives of SM490A material(base metal) specimens and fillet weld specimens, which are made same material and weld method for the railway vehicle. These fatigue lives have a difference, the fatigue lives of weld specimen are shorter than those of base metal. We measured the strains on the weld positions of the specimens during the fatigue test for investigation of crack initiation and crack growth. In these result, we could find the information of the crack initiation position on weld bead and the history of crack growth. Also we knew that the fatigue crack initiation cycles and the changes of the strain which were affected the fractured surface roughness and morphology.

  • Welding is widely applicable and reliable process and is mainly adopted for fabricating heavy structures. Recently, weld metal transverse cracks in butt and fillet weld joint is a serious problem, and they must be eliminated for improving weld joint reliability. The weld metal transverse crack susceptibility of butt and fillet joint was carried out by cantilever type tensile crack testing jig and CTS test. In this view of point, this study investigated the potential factors for weld metal transverse crack. The main results obtained were as follows: 1. The content o fdiffusible hydrogen in weld metal played an important role for weld metal transverse cracks. 2. From cantilever type tensile crack tests, it was pointed out that the higher the diffusible hydrogen content and tensile restraint, the more susceptible to weld metal transverse craking. 3. The TSN(thermal severity number) and diffusible hydrogen were important factors for determining weld metal transverse cracks in fillet weld joints.

  • Stainless steel sheets are widely used as structural materials for the manufacture of railroad cars and commercial vehicles. These kinds structures used stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by using the gas welding. For the fatigue design of gas welded joints such as fillet joints and plug joints, it is necessary to obtain information on the stress distribution at the weldment and the fatigue strength of the gas welded joints. Moreover the influence of the geometrical parameters corresponding to the gas welded joints on the stress distribution and fatigue strength must be evaluated. ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were obtained from the data recorded in fatigue tests. Using these results, the ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were rearranged according the relation between $\Delta\sigma-N_f$ and the maximum stress at the edge of the fillet welded joint.
