It is very important to understand the intention of a target ship to prevent collisions in multiple-ship situations. However, considering the intentions of a large number of ships at the same time is a great burden for the officer who must establish a collision avoidance plan. With a distributed algorithm, a ship can exchange information with a large number of target ships and search for a safe course. In this paper, I have applied a Distributed Stochastic Search Algorithm (DSSA), a distributed algorithm, for ship collision avoidance. A ship chooses the course that offers the greatest cost reduction or keeps its current course according to probability and constraints. DSSA is divided into five types according to the probability and constraints mentioned. In this paper, the five types of DSSA are applied for ship collision avoidance, and the effects on ship collision avoidance are analyzed. In addition, I have investigated which DSSA type is most suitable for collision avoidance. The experimental results show that the DSSA-A and B schemes offered effective ship collision avoidance. This algorithm is expected to be applicable for ship collision avoidance in a distributed system.

Marine transportation system plays an important role in maintaining and promoting economic activities among countries. The accurate understanding of marine traffic flows are necessary for the further advancement of marine transportation system. While many existing researches on marine traffic have been conducted mainly on the basis of statistical analysis using traffic data, ship's traffic flow simulation model was developed in this study. A collision avoidance algorithm was conducted with categorizing of traffic factors such as ship's length and speed. The developed model was also verified by a simulation process.

On the basis of DCPA(Distance to Closest Point of Approach) and TCPA(Time to CPA), the conventional algorithms for collision avoidances have a drawback that the '72 CORLEGs(International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972) has not taken into account to prevent collisions between ships. In this paper, the proposed algorithm decides whether the own ship is a give-way vessel or a stand-on vessel by observing the relative bearing of the encountered ship. To determine the ship position and time for collision avoidance, the proposed algorithm utilizes the ellipse model for ship safety domain. The computer simulation is done to represent the process of adversive behavior. Using the proposed method, the past maritime accident is analyzed. The proposed method can be effectively applied to collision avoidance by CORLEGs even when the target ship's navigational lights is invisible in poor weather and/or in the restricted visibility.
This study compared and analyzed the performance of a distributed area search algorithm and a distributed probability search algorithm based on information exchange between ships. The distributed algorithm is a method that can search for an optimal avoidance route based on information exchange between ships. In the distributed area search algorithm, only a ship with the maximum cost reduction among neighboring ships has priority, so the next expected location can be changed. The distributed stochastic search algorithm allows a non-optimal value to be searched with a certain probability so that a new value can be searched. A circular-based ship collision avoidance model was used for the ship-to-ship collision avoidance experiment. The experimental method simulated the distributed area search algorithm and the distributed stochastic search algorithm while increasing the number of ships from 2 to 50 that were the same distance from the center of the circle. The calculation time required for each algorithm, sailing distance, and number of message exchanges were compared and analyzed. As a result of the experiment, the DSSA(Distributed Stochastic Search Algorithm) recorded a 25%calculation time, 88% navigation distance, and 84% of number of message exchange rate compared to DLSA.

When using a distributed system, it is very important to know the intention of a target ship in order to prevent collisions. The action taken by a certain ship for collision avoidance and the action of the target ship it intends to avoid influence each other. However, it is difficult to establish a collision avoidance plan in consideration of multiple-ship situations for this reason. To solve this problem, a Distributed Stochastic Search Algorithm (DSSA) has been proposed. A DSSA searches for a course that can most reduce cost through repeated information exchange with target ships, and then indicates whether the current course should be maintained or a new course should be chosen according to probability and constraints. However, it has not been proven how the parameters used in DSSA affect collision avoidance actions. Therefore, in this paper, I have investigated the effect of the parameters and weight factors of DSSA. Experiments were conducted by combining parameters (time window, safe domain, detection range) and weight factors for encounters of two ships in head-on, crossing, and overtaking situations. A total of 24,000 experiments were conducted: 8,000 iterations for each situation. As a result, no collision occurred in any experiment conducted using DSSA. Costs have been shown to increase if a ship gives a large weight to its destination, i.e., takes selfish behavior. The more lasting the expected position of the target ship, the smaller the sailing distance and the number of message exchanges. The larger the detection range, the safer the interaction.

(COLREGs, International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea,
Author presented some study with regard to “automatic control for ship collision avoidance system” before. Those papers are to deal with unsolved problem,; in the previous study. In this paper, two issues relating to ship collision avoidance were investigated. One is to suggest a new algorithm of avoidance of a group ship. This algorithm is useful when a ship takes avoiding action for a group fish boats and a group of merchant vessels. In the stage of taking avoidance action, newly-developed algorithm was used. the other is to develop a unified model of collision risk. Generally collision risk changes according to various type of encounters. The new model is to take into account of these situations. The above-mentioned algorithm and model were verified through simulation under various encounters between ships.

DCPA(Distance to Closest Point of Approach)와 TCPA(Time to Closest Point of Approach),
