The residual safety assessment of steel structures, an important subject in practice, is given to much attention. Life prediction in the planning course of steel structures under fatigue loading is mainly based on fatigue design criteria resulting from S-N curves. But for any reason cracks have to be assumed due to fabrication failures or fatigue loading in service which can lead total fracture of structures. The life prediction can be carried out by means of fracture mechanics using Paris-Erdogan equation($da/dN=C {\cdot}{\Delta}K^m$). The paper presents results from charpy test to interpret transition behaviour of charpy energy($A_V$) in a wide temperature range and from constant-load-amplitude test to measure fatigue crack growth of various steels widely used in steel bridges since beginning of 20 centuries in Europe. In the normal service temperature range of steel bridges, the steel S355M shows higher maximum charpy energy($A_{Vmax}$) and lower transition temperature($T_{AVmax/2}$) than other steels considered. The C and m of Paris-Erdogan equation on the steels appear to be correlated, and to be affected by the R-ratios due to crack closure, especially at a low fatigue crack growth rate. Scanning electron microscopy analysis was carried out to interpret an influence of the crack closure effects on the correlation of C and m.

Recently, multi-functionalization (as in smart phones) has been in demand, and the connectors connecting the electrical signals of each board in a cellular phone have become key components. The miniaturization of these connectors is required to achieve a finer pitch design and enhance the electrical signal transfer capacity. However, the miniaturization of connectors reduces the structural safety, and a finer pitch design may cause contact problems under external impact. In this paper, a preliminary design for miniaturized, finer-pitch connectors is suggested for a product with 50 pins and a thickness of 0.2 mm. The assembly process of the FPCB (Flexible Printed Circuit Board) and connector was simulated to ensure the holding force between the two components and avoid overstressing. The design optimization process was performed with the Taguchi method. Fatigue analysis was also conducted to predict the fatigue life of the terminal, and the theoretical and experimental results were compared.
This study was Performed to evaluate applicability of color flexible pavement concrete (CFPC) for motorway pavement. Color flexible pavement has been applied to non-motorway pavements, such as pedestrian and bicycle road. Two polymers were used to modify the binder and to strengthen the stiffness of pavement mixture. Waste paper was used to prevent the asphalt of gap-grade mixture from draining. Marshall properties, indirect tensile strength(ITS), tensile strength ratio(TSR) before and after freezing-and-thawing treatment and artificial aging, permanent deformation and fatigue life were measured. Color bituminous concrete mixtures used this study had nearly the same quality in mechanical properties when compared with conventional asphalt concrete mixtures manufactured with AP-3 and all mixtures satisfied with domestic specification for motorway pavement. Therefore, it is proved that the color bituminous concrete used this study can be applied for motorway pavement.
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of various joint sealant on reducing the reflection cracking of asphalt concrete overlay on cement concrete pavement. The test method used was an accelerated reflection cracking test in shear mode, which was developed for evaluation of reflection cracking resistance of overlaid asphalt concrete in laboratory. The test results showed that use of joint sealants resulted in a significant reduction of reflection cracking. When sealant E was used, the fatigue life was the highest, with relatively larger horizontal deformation. When Sealant B was used, the dynamic stability was the highest with the smallest horizontal deformation. In general, the greater the tensile strength of sealant, the better the crack resistance of the mixture.
While a satellite is carried into orbit by a launch vehicle, it is exposed to the severe launch environment with random vibrations and shock. Accordingly, these vibration sources affect electronic equipment, particularly the printed circuit board (PCB) in the satellite. When the launch load impacts the PCB, it causes negative behavior. This causes perpendicular bending around the boundary of fixation points that finally leads to the failure of solder joints, lead wires, and PCB cracks. To overcome these issues, the electronic equipment design must meet reliability requirements. In this paper, Steinberg's method is used to derive allowable and maximum deflection to verify design from a life perspective concerning the control board of the Antenna Pointing Driver (APD) mounted on KOMPSAT-3.

Recent studies on the fatigue assessment of high strength steel weld based on the fracture mechanics have frequently raised the problems related to the conservatism in the fatigue crack growth rate specified in the relevant design code. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the fatigue crack growth parameter on the fatigue life for the low carbon steel weld. In order to do it, the fatigue tests with the constant stress ratio were performed to evaluate the fatigue crack growth rate in the butt weld of SM490. And the fatigue crack growth parameters of the weld were evaluated in accordance with ASTM E647. From the comparative fatigue assessment results, it was found that the fatigue crack growth rate specified in the relevant design code was too conservative to estimate the residual fatigue life of welded structure. So, in order to get the more reliable results, it was recommended that the fatigue life estimation based on the fracture mechanics be performed with the fatigue crack growth parameter specified by test.

Ship structure is composed of the welded mixture members which are plate and stiffeners. Ship structure is also influenced by variable loadings such as wave and inertia load. There have been several fatigue damage problems on the connection between longitudinal and transverse web due to wide usage of high tensile steel and adoption of wide web space to improve shipbuilding productivity. It is impossible to estimate the fatigue lives for all connection details through refined fatigue analysis. It is necessary to use the simplified approach for the fatigue life estimation of the connection details. PLUS analysis, which is suggested by the classification society, is one of the simplified approaches and is widely adopted to get fatigue lives for the connection details along whole cargo hold area. However, ship building yards still have difficulties to get fatigue lives due to large amount of calculation and time even if this approach reduce the time and amount of calculation. This paper treats the computing system developed to reduce efforts of estimating the fatigue lives. The influence factors of mean shear stress and local dynamic pressure are easily calculated and fatigue lives for all hot spots can be estimated automatically by the developed computing system. It is possible to reduce computing time and efforts to get the fatigue lives for the connection details between longitudinals and transverse webs along the ship. This system was applied to get fatigue lives on the connection details of a VLCC and verified the availability.

Gears are critical elements in automobiles, and their use as power transmitting machine elements in engineering applications is quite extensive. In the areas of contact between gear teeth, the condition of a gear is likely to deteriorate due to contact fatigue, wear, material defects, lubrication failure, etc. Thus, it is necessary to monitor its condition to ensure smooth power transmission. Gear teeth deterioration causes failures such as abrasive wear, scuffing, pitting, and spalling. These failures lead to a higher level of vibration signals in the gear system. This paper presents the results of an experiment on the surface fatigue wear of a spur gear system. The correlation between the estimated specific film thickness, statistical parameter of the vibration signals, and Stribeck curve was considered in this study.
Long-term performance of polymer under constant sustained load has been the main research focus, which created a need for the accelerated test method providing proper lifetime assessment. Cycling fatigue loading is one of the accelerated test method and has been of great interest. Microstructure change of high density polyethylene under cyclic fatigue loading and creep was examined utilizing a tensile device specially designed for creep and fatigue test and also can be attachable to the X-ray diffractometer. In this way, the crystal morphology change of polyethylene under creep and cyclic fatigue load was successfully monitored and compared. Despite the marked differences in macroscopic deformation between the creep and cyclic fatigue tests, crystal morphology such as crystallinity, crystal size, and $d$-spacing was as nearly identical between the two test cases. Specimens pre-deformed to different strains, i.e., before yield point (BYP), at yield point (YP) and after yield point (AYP), however, showed markedly different changes in crystal morphology, especially between AYP and the other two specimens.
