  • Rotating bending fatigue tests of an authentic steel 304 were performed at various temperatures such as room temperature, $538^{\circ}$ and $593^{\circ}C$. The plastic replica method was also applied in order to estimate the fatigue life on the basis of serial observation of small fatigue crack initiation and growth on the pit specimen surface. The fatigue crack growth behavior of 304 stainless steel was investigated within the frame work of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics within a narrow scatterband in spite of different stress levels at elevated temperature as at room temperature. The growth law of small surface crack is determined uniquely by the term. $\DELTA\sigma^{n}a$ where $\DELTA\sigma$ is the stress amplitude, a is the crack length, and n is a constant. It is found that the small crack growth behavior is basically equivalent to the S-$N_{f}$ relationship, where S and $N_{f}$ are stress and number of cycles to failure, and the fatigue life prediction is in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • Fatigue cracks can be generated in aircraft as a result of the cumulative time spent during flight operations, which can extend for long periods of time and cover a variety of missions. If a crack occurs in an aircraft's main spar, it can generate many problems, including a lift time reduction. To solve this problem, it was necessary to perform an analysis of fatigue crack growth in the fatigue critical locations. Much time and expense is involved in generating the stress needed for a crack propagation analysis over a long period of time to obtain the amount of data required for an actual aircraft. In this paper, an algorithm is developed that can calculate the spectrum of stress over a long period of time for a mission by the Southwest Research Institute, which is based on the short-time load factor data produced using the peak-valley cycle counting method.

  • A modified method for the analysis of short fatigue crack growth has been presented, and calculations based upon the modified method are compared with experimental results for S45C carbon steel. It is also shown that the modified method is in good agreement with experimental data. The proposed equation for the fatigue crack growth rates includes a material constant which relates the threshold level to the endurance limit, a correction for elastic-plastic behaviour and a means for dealing with the effects of crack closure. In this study one of the modifications is to substitute the Forman' s elastic expression of the stress intensity factor range into the geometrical factor The other is a consideration of the bending effect which is developed from the moment caused by the eccentric cross sectional geometry as the crack grows. Thus, this method is useful for residual life prediction of the mechanical structures as well as the welding structures.

  • In this study, in order to research the causes lead to fatigue crack in the coped stringer of a steel railway bridge, we take the steel railway bridge which actually occurs fatigue crack as a research object and manufacture the full size of crossbeam-stringer and floor system model to perform the experimental test. The results indicates that, the fatigue crack in the top of coped area of stringers is caused by the reciprocal action of the in plane stress in the tip of coped area of web by the negative moment occurred in the end of the stringers. While the fatigue crack in the bottom of coped area of stringers is due to the plane stress caused by the out-plane deformation relative to the bottom of coped area of web of the fixed end in the stringers.

  • Due to the higher ratio of live load to total loads of railway bridges, the accumulated damage by cyclic fatigue is significant. Moreover, it is highly possible that the initiated crack grows faster than that of highway bridges. Therefore, it is strongly needed to assess the safety for the accumulated damage analytically. The initiation and growth of fatigue-crack are related with the stress range, number of cycles, and the stiffness of the structural system. The stiffness of the structural system includes uncertainties of the planning, design, construction and maintenance, which varies as time goes. In this study, the authors developed the design and risk assessment techniques based on the reliability theories considering the uncertainties in load and resistance. For the probabilistic risk assessment of crack growth and the remaining life of the structures by the cyclic load of railway and subway bridges, response surface method (RSM) combined with first order second moment method were used. For composing limit state function, the stress range, stress intensity factor and the remaining life were selected as input important random variables to the RSM program. The probabilities of failure and the reliability indices of fatigue life for the considered specimen under cyclic loads were evaluated and discussed.

  • Membrane-type hull and cargo holds have been designed and built for large ship. However, there is a growing interest in applying the same technology to small and medium-sized Liquefied natural gas(LNG) carriers to meet the recent increase in demand for LNG as an ecofriendly fuel and for expanding LNG bunkering infrastructure. The purpose of this study is to apply the IMO Type-B tank to small and medium-sized LNG carriers and verify the safety and suitability of the design. Fatigue crack propagation analysis was performed to install a partial second drip tray installed at the lower part of the LNG cargo tank by calculating the amount of leaked gas in the support structure supporting the cargo tank. First, a program for fatigue crack propagation analysis was developed, in which Paris' law and British Standard 7910 (BS 79110) were applied based on the International Code for the Construction of Equipment and Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk, an international standard for LNG carriers. In addition, a surface crack propagation analysis was performed. Next, a methodology for assuming the initial through-crack size was developed to determine the size of the partial second barrier. The analysis was performed for 15 days, which is a possible return time after cracks are detected. Finally, the safety and suitability of the IMO Type-B for LNG cargo tanks required by international regulations were verified. For the accurate analysis of fatigue crack propagation, it is necessary to develop and verify the analysis procedure based on direct analysis and international regulations.

  • To verify the existing theory, non-propagating crack(NPC) does not exist in Ti which fulfills the good conditions for being of NPC, NPC detection in Ti was tried out. Also, the conception of fatigue limit in Ti and a main cause for NPC being were inquired. NPC was detected in both sharp notch root ( $\rho$=0.02mm) and micro pit (diameter = 0.25mm) which held fast to the end under stressing of fatigue limit. Therefore, the existing theory was identified as mistake. But, NPC can not be detected in smooth specimen. This fact would be due to the presumption that NPC is very small or crack does not initiate in smooth specimen. Anyway, the fatigue limit of Ti does not correspond to critical stress of crack initiation but correspond to critical stress of NPC growth. Measurement on the COD of NPC in Ti showed that the crack tip was closed even under the peak stress level at fatigue limit. But, after stress relieving annealing crack tip was opened. Consequently, compressive residual stress which is induced around the crack tip is considered to be the factor causing the NPC being.

  • Steel plates used for common structures are manufactured by rolling processes in general. The rolling direction traces generated during the processes have significant influences on mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of the plates. The objective of present study is to investigate those directional characteristics for the enhancement of steel structure safety. SS400 steel plates of 3 mm thickness are tested in this study, When the angles between the tensile loading direction and the rolling direction of the plates are increased, their yield strengths are increased and elongations are rather decreased. It is also shown that fatigue crack growth rates in the plates can be increased according to the changes of those mechanical characteristics. For the safety of the structures, therefore, it is critical to decrease the angles between the rolling direction and the tensile loading direction.

  • The use of fracture mechanics has traditionally concentrated on crack growth under an opening mechanism. However, many service failure occur from cracks subjected to mixed mode loadings. Hence, it is necessary to evaluate the fatigue behavior under mixed mode loading. Under mixed mode loading conditions, not only the fatigue crack propagation rate is of importance, but also the crack propagation direction. The mode I and II stress intensity factors of CTS specimen were calculated using elastic finite element method. The propagation behavior of the fatigue crack of the STS304 steeds under mixed mode loading condition was evacuated by using stress intensity factors $K_I$ and $K_II. The MTS criterion and effective stress intensity factor were applied to predict the crack propagation direction and the fatigue crack propagation rate.

  • Creep-fatigue crack growth behavior was experimentally measured particularly when a crack was located in the heat affected region of lCr-5Mo steel. Load hold times of the tests for trapezoidal fatigue waveshapes were varied among 0, 30, 300 and 3,600 seconds. Time-dependent crack growth rates were characterized by the $C_r$parameter. It was found that the crack growth rates were the highest when the crack path was located along the fine-grained heat affected zone(FGHAZ). Cracks located in other heat affected regions had a tendency to change the crack path eventually to FGHAZ. Creep-fatigue crack growth law of the studied case is suggested in terms of (da/dt)$_{avg}$ vs. ($C_t$)$_{avg}$ for residual life assessment.
