  • Fatigure crack growth from surface defects is one of the most important subjects for the evaluation and the assurance of safety in pressure vessels, piping systems, ship hulls and other various structures. This paper attempts to analysis some practical or general problems such as the estimation of crack growth life to penetrate the plate thickness, based on fatigure crack growth from a single surface flaw and the interaction of multiple flaws. An experiment on the coalescence of multiple undercuts was carried out under cyclic tension condition as a attempt to the analysis of multiple crack problems. It is noted that the fracture strength is characterized by the analogy to that in a single crack growth.

  • In this study, the effect of mode II by variation of multilevel loading direction was experimentally investigated in the fatigue crack propagation behavior. To generate mixed-mode I+II loading state, the compact tension shear(CTS) specimen and loading device were used in this tests. The experimental method divided into three steps and three cases that were step I(0$^{\circ}$), step II(30$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$, 90$^{\circ}$),step III(0$^{\circ}$) and case I(0$^{\circ}$ ⇒ 30$^{\circ}$ ⇒ 0$^{\circ}$), case II(0$^{\circ}$ ⇒ 60$^{\circ}$ ⇒ 0$^{\circ}$), case III(0$^{\circ}$ ⇒ 90$^{\circ}$ ⇒ 0$^{\circ}$). The result of test, the step II affected to the step III in the all case. Specially, The fatigue crack propagation rate was faster and the fatigue life was smaller than of mixed mode I+II(30$^{\circ}$,60$^{\circ}$) due to the effect of mode II in the step III of the case III

  • Effect of Cd addition on the fatigue properties of Al-Cu-Mn cast alloy was investigated by low and high cycle fatigue tests. With increasing Cd content, fatigue life and tensile strength were increased. It was found that the fatigue strength was 115MPa and the fatigue ratio was 0.31. Metallographic observation revealed that the fatigue crack initiated at the surface and propagated along the grain boundary. This propagation path was attributed to the presence of PFZ along the grain boundary. The tensile strength increased from 330MPa in the Cd-free Al-Cu- Mn cast alloy to 401MPa in the 0.15%Cd-containing alloy.

  • Plastics have brought a significant progress in reducing the weight of automotive parts and improving gas emissions by replacing steel parts. The front end module (FEM) carrier, which was made from long glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (PP-LFT), is one of the most successful examples. On the other hand, more research on the fatigue behavior and vibration durability of automotive plastic parts will be needed to improve the long-term reliability. This paper analyzed the durability of the PP-LFT, which is fundamental to fatigue design and analysis of FEM carrier. Various fatigue tests were conducted at different stress ratios to evaluate the relationship between the fatigue life and stress amplitude or mean stress level. In the case of a fixed stress amplitude, the change in fatigue life with the stress ratio was 2~6% larger than the case of fixed maximum stress. Furthermore, this study observed the mechanism of initiation and propagation of the fatigue cracks in PP-LFT by scanning electron microscopy.

  • Alloy 617 is one of the primary candidate materials to be used in a very high temperature reactor (VHTR) system as an intermediate heat exchanger (IHX). To investigate the low cycle fatigue behavior of Alloy 617 weldments at a high temperature of $850^{\circ}C$, fully reversed strain-controlled fatigue tests were conducted with the total strain values ranging from 0.6~1.5%. The weldment specimens were machined using the weld pads fabricated with a single V-grove configuration by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process. The fatigue life is reduced as the total strain range increases. For all testing conditions, the cyclic stress response behavior of the Alloy 617 weldments exhibited the initial cyclic strain hardening phenomenon during the initial small number of cycles. Furthermore, the overall fatigue cracking and the propagation or cracks showed a transgranular failure mode.

  • In this study, retardation behavior of fatigue crack under single overloading of the mixed mode I+II state was experimentally investigated. To produce single overload in the mixed mode I+II state, the compact tension shear (CTS) specimen and loading device were used. The propagation tests for fatigue crack were performed under mode I loading overloading afterwards. We examined the observed deformation aspects, variation of fatigue life and crack propagation rate, and the aspects of retardation behavior from tests. The retardation effect of mixed-mode single overload on fatigue crack propagation behavior was smaller than that of mode I single overload. It has been confirmed that the retardation behavior did not immediately appear and the retardation length was short when the component of mixed-mode overload was changed.

  • Due to their high strength and good wear resistance, nitro-carburizing materials have been used for many machine components. However, the nitro-carburizing materials are found to have one disadvantage ; that is, their strength and fatigue life show larger scatter than those of non-heated metals. In this paper, therfore, the statistical chracteristics of non-heated and nitro-carburized specimens for SCM415 are investi- gated under two different of stress levels 1.15 .sigma. /sub .omega. / .leq. / .sigma. / sub .alpha. / .leq. / 1.25 .sigma. /sub .omega. /. Seven specimens at each stress level are tested by using rotating bending fatigue tester. The relation between a crack length and fatigue cycles can be arranged for Weibull distribution, and S-N curve using 95% reliability function is obtalined for nitro-carburized specimen.

  • Cyclic deformation and fatigue behavior of $Al/$Al_2O_3$ metal matrix composites and matrix alloy were studied. Hatigue strength Al/$Al_2O_3$ composites was about 210MPa, and that of Al matrix alloy was 170MPa. Most of the resultant displacement due to permanent plastic deformation occurred in less than the first 5% of fatigue life. In case of composites, decrease of cyclic displacement was smaller than that of matrix because the reinforcements acted as barriers to dislocation movement. Consequently, cyclic stress-displacement response curve can be considered to have these atages ; an initial few cycles of rapid hardening, followed by progressive hardening for most the fatigue life, and then just prior to failure, an instantaneous drop in stress carrying capability of the material due to multiple microcrack initiation, eventual coalescence of microcrack to form a macrocrack and then rapid macroscopic crack growth.

  • The design of LNG ship needs very high level structural design/analysis technology compared with conventional ship types because it requires perfect security against the extremly dangerous and cryogenic cargo. Hence, present paper describes the general procedure of the structural safety assessment for independent tank type LNG ship, which contains following items. 1) Long term prediction of the wave induced stresses including ship motion analysis, structural analysis of hull and tank and stochastic analysis process of ocean waves. 2) Fatigue strength analysis of a tank structure based on the S-N approach. 3) Structural safety assessment against the fatigue crack propagation based on the LBF(Leak Before Failure) concept. The first report focuced on the item (1) (2) and example calculation was performed on a prototype LNG ship. The remained part will be covered by the second report.
