Herbal Medicine for Liver Cancer: A Protocol for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (간암에 대한 한약치료: 체계적 문헌고찰 및 메타분석의 프로토콜)

  • Introduction: The aim of this systematic review is to provide evidence confirming the efficacy and safety of herbal medicines used in the treatment of liver cancer. Methods: The review will include randomized clinical trials that compared herbal medicines used as treatments for liver cancer with other therapies, such as placebos and Western medicine. Only randomized controlled trials will be included in this review, and all types of herbal medicine will be evaluated. Eleven electronic databases will be searched from the inception date: the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, CINAHL, one Chinese database (CNKI), and five Korean databases (OASIS, DBpia, RISS, KISS, and NDSL). The selection of studies, data extraction, and management will be performed independently by four researchers. Methodological quality, including the risk of bias, will be assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias assessment tool. Results: The review of current evidence for the effectiveness of herbal medicine for liver cancer will be summarized and quantitatively analyzed. Conclusions: Our systematic review will provide evidence of the efficacy of herbal medicines as treatments for liver cancer. This evidence will provide useful information for practitioners and patients in the fields of oncology and complementary medicine.

Effect of Proteases on the Migration and Invasion of U-373-MG Cells Induced by Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and Hepatocyte Growth Factor (VEGF와 HGF에 의해 유도된 U-373-MG 세포의 이동 및 침윤에 미치는 단백질분해효소의 효과)

  • Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) are potent angiogenic factors that have been used clinically to induce angiogenesis. To enable migration and invasion, cells must proliferate and secrete proteinases, which degrade the surrounding extracellular matrix. The goal of this study was to investigate the cell proliferation; matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), MMP-9, and plasmin secretion; and migration and invasion of glioma-derived U-373-MG cells induced by VEGF and HGF treatment. An additional goal was to test the hypothesis that elevated secretion of MMP-2, MMP-9, and plasmin contributed directly or indirectly to the proliferation, migration, and invasion of U-373-MG cells. Cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and MMP-2, MMP-9, and plasmin secretion were significantly increased in the VEGF and HGF-treated U-373-MG cells. To elucidate the role of the increased secretion of MMP-2, MMP-9, and plasmin in cell proliferation, migration, and invasion of the U-373-MG cells, they were treated with MMPs inhibitor (BB-94) and plasmin inhibitor (α2AP) prior to VEGF or HGF stimulation. The BB-94 and α2AP treatment resulted in a significant reduction in the cell proliferation, migration, and invasion of the U-373-MG cells as compared with the VEGF- and HGF-treated groups. The results indicate that inhibition of MMPs and plasmin reduce the cell proliferation, migration, and invasion of U-373-MG cells.

The Effects of Zeolite-Type Catalysts on the Pyrolysis Reaction of PP to Produce Fuel-oil (폴리프로필렌 수지 이용 연료유 생성을 위한 열분해 반응에서 제올라이트계 촉매의 영향)

  • The effects of zeolite-type catalysts addition on the thermal decomposition of the PP resin have been studied in a thermal analyzer, a Pyrolyser GC-mass, and a small batch reactor. The zeolite type catalysts tested were natural zeolite, used FCC catalyst, and ZSM-5. As the results of TGA experiments, the pyrolysis starting temperature for PP varied in the range of $330{\sim}360^{\circ}C$ according to the heating rate. Addition of the zeolite type catalysts in the PP resin increased the pyrolysis rate in the order of used FCC catalyst> natural zeolite> ZSM-5 > PP resin. Adding the used FCC catalyst in the PP reduced most effectively the pyrolysis finishing temperature. In the PY-G.C. mass experiments, addition of zeolite type catalysts decreased the molecular weight of pyrolyzed product. In the batch system experiments, the mixing of used FCC catalyst enhanced best the initial yield of fuel oil, but the final yield of fuel oil was 2% higher in the case of mixing of natural zeolite. Also in the carbon number analysis, used FCC catalyst was the most useful one in this experiments for fuel oil.
