Application of IAEA TRS-398 Protocol to Gamma Knife Model C (감마나이프 C모델에 대한 IAEA TRS-398 프로토콜의 적용)

  • Although Gamma Knife irradiates much more radiation in a single session than conventional radiotherapy, there were only a few studies to measure absolute dose of a Gamma Knife. Especially, there is no report of application of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) TRS-398 which requires to use a water phantom in radiation measurement to Gamma Knife. In this article, the authors reported results of the experiments to measure the absorbed dose to water of a Gamma Knife Model C using the IAEA TRS-398 protocol. The absorbed dose to water of a Gamma Knife model C was measured using a water phantom under conditions as close as possible to the IAEA TRS-398 protocol. The obtained results were compared with values measured using the plastic phantom provided by the Gamma Knife manufacturer. Two Capintec PR-05P mini-chambers and a PTW UNIDOS electrometer were used in measurements. The absorbed dose to water of a Gamma Knife model C inside the water phantom was 1.38% larger than that of the plastic phantom. The current protocol provided by the manufacturer has an intrinsic error stems from the fact that a plastic phantom is used instead of a water phantom. In conclusion, it is not possible to fully apply IAEA TRS-398 to measurement of absorbed dose of a Gamma Knife. Instead, it can be a practical choice to build a new protocol for Gamma Knife or to provide a conversion factor from a water phantom to the plastic phantom. The conversion factor can be obtained in one or two standard laboratories.

  • The behavior of conger eel, Astroconger myriaster (Brevoort), to the bamboo and plastic pots with baits was investigated alternately in two experimental water tanks. One of the pots being dropped on the tank bottom, the eels touched it to obtain the bait probably by their sense of smell, and increased rapidly in the number of touch to show a maximum within 30 minutes. But the touch was made mainly to the pot wall at which the bait was located and quite accidentally to the pot mouth. The eels touched the pot mouth retreated frequently without attempting to enter the pot and their entering was very hampered by the bamboo funnel constituting the pot mouth. However, a entering, if made, encouraged other touches and the touches ascribed other enterings. But, if 30 minutes elapsed, the number of touch decreased gradually and so the enterings were little made. The ability of pots attracting the eels into them was varied with their inclination to the tank bottom and the bait position in them. That is, the pot which was laid horizontally showed high ability of attracting in case in which the bait was fixed in the vicinity of its mouth. The pot, inclined by $30^{\circ}$ by lifting its tail and had a bait left free, showed almost equal ability to the horizontal pot with a bait in the vicinity of mouth. A comparison between the bamboo and plastic pots gave only that the entering of the eels became later several minutes in the latter.

Manufacturing Multi-degradable Food Packaging Films and Their Degradibility (복합분해성 플라스틱 식품포장 필름의 제조 및 분해성)

  • Multi-degradable master hatch (M/B) was prepared and 0.05 mm polyethylene (PP) food packaging films containing 0, 10, and 20% M/B were manufactured by inflation film processing. The films were exposed to UV radiation, fungi, and heat in order to observe their photolysis, biodegradability, and thermal degradability, respectively. While pure PP film maintained more than 70% of its original elongation after 8 weeks of UV radiation, an almost perfect loss in the elongation of PP film containing 20% M/B was observed. Significant decreases in elongation of PP films by heat treatment $(68{\pm}2^{\circ}C)$ were also found in samples containing the multi-degradable M/B. By observing changes in film surface after the inoculation of fungi using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the biodegradability of plastic film could be accelerated with the addition of multi-degradable M/B. The results of the mulching test in yard showed that adding multi-degradable M/B can effectively degrade plastic films in natural environmental conditions without interrupting the growth of plants.

  • Bio-based plastics containing the biomass content higher than 25 wt% have been considered as environment-friendly materials due to their effects on the reduction in the $CO_2$ emission and petroleum consumption as well as biodegradability after use. In this study, poly vinyl chloride, plant-derived plasticizers, by adding a biodegradable catalyst was observed a change in the biodegradability and physical properties. To produce the oxidative decomposition transparent bio film, which is broken down in the initial percent elongation and physical properties such as tensile strength, it was to test the safety of the product as a food packaging material. Poly vinyl chloride, primary plasticizer, secondary plasticizer, anti fogging agent, the combined stabilizer were mixed in a high speed mixer, then extruded using an extrusion molding machine, after cooling, winding, to produce a oxidative decomposition transparent bio film and the control film, with a thickness of $12{\mu}m$ through winder role. Mechanical properties tensile strength, elongation, and the maximum load elongation and biodegradation test. Transparent bio film produced by biodegradation catalyst is compared with the control film. Tensile strength and elongation of films were found to be no significant difference. Further, as a result of the biodegradation test for 45 days based on the ASTM D6954-04 method, biodegrability of film is 61.4%.

Improvement Effect and Electrical Characteristics of Soft Ground with Plastic Electrode Spacing (전극간 거리에 따른 연약지반의 지반개량 효과와 전기적 특성)

  • Soft ground stabilization is needed to construct large civil facilities on the soft clay ground. Pre-loading method, which is accelerating consolidation method, is generally used to stabilize the soft ground. However, pre-loading method is required long construction period and quantities of fill material. Therefore, electro-osmosis method is used to replace pre-loading method for stabilizing the soft ground. Electro-osmosis method is disadvantageous in constructive and economic aspects because it is needed a metallic electrode. So, in order to solve the those disadvantages, plastic electrode was developed to replace metallic electrode. Plastic electrode, which is made by using nano-technology on existing Plastic Drain Board (PDB), was used to supply the electric power. In this study, therefore, the model test was conducted to confirm the effect of improvement and electrical characteristics of soft ground by spacing of plastic electrode. The result shows that the effect of improvement of soft ground was decreased up to 45% by increasing electrode spacing and electrical characteristics on the soft ground were influenced by consolidation settlement with electrode spacing.

Barely Visible Impact Damage Detection Analyses of CFRP by Various NDE Techniques (다양한 비파괴 측정 방법에 의한 CFRP의 BVID 분석)

  • This study aims to detecting and analyzing the defects of damaged carbon fiber reinforced composites after impacts, particularly focusing on barely visible impact damages. The impact test was progressed by a drop-weight machine and applied to introduce simulated damages on laminated composites used in aircrafts. Various nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques were applied to identify the defects on the specimens with different levels of impact energies. Based on the measurements data, the levels of the barely visible impacts, and the applicability and effectiveness of the detection methods were discussed. Generally, the results demonstrated that their inner damages contained bigger footprints than those on the surfaces. However, when the damage energy was low, it was found that the inner damage size could be smaller than those appeared on the surfaces.

  • In this study, we would like to describe peel strength and dynamic shear property on various substrates of multi-layered structural double-sided adhesive tape with or without adhesive (AD) prepared by UV curing for an automobile, construction, and display junction. According to adapt the adhesive, the peel and dynamic shear strength of adhesion tape prepared with acrylic foam or various plastic substrates increased with increasing molecular weight, however, decreased over 650000 molecular weight. The adhesion property shows high value at the thin AD layer with decreasing temperature. The interface property shows highest at MW 615000 (AD-4), and the interface junction below MW 615000 resulted to divide from acrylic foam and adhesive layer. From this study, the multi-layered structural double-sided adhesive tapes seem to be a useful for industrial area such as a low surface energy plastic material and curved substrate.

  • The proper design of the gate location for injection molding of plastic goods is obtained from three-dimensional injection molding analysis for various design alternatives. This paper is study on effect of gate location in injection molding. It have a decisive impact on productivity and quality of plastic goods. This objectives of this paper is to analysis effect of hot runner gate location for resin filling, weld line, injection pressure to manufacture of automobile air cleaner upper case with injection molding machine. Thus, to analysis these problems in this paper, location of gate are gave variety in 4 CASEs. In this paper, the CAE simulation considering each variations in location of gate is performed to predict the cause of faulty which appears in the injection molding process.

Measurement of Radon-222 Exhalation Rate from Building Materials by Using CR-39 Radon Cup (CR-39 라돈컵을 이용한 국산 전축자재의 라돈-222 방출율 측정)

  • Radon-222 exhalation rate from several domestic building materials were experimentally measured by using radon cup method, in which a CR-39 plastic is used as a passive radon detector. The radon detection factor of CR-39 detector determined in a series of calibration experiments was $0.164{\pm}0.005(tracks\;cm^{-2}/Bq\;d\;m^{-3})$, which is consistent with those reported by other investigators. The radon exhalation rates of several building materials (brick, red brick, concrete block, granite plate, concrete floor and wall) ranges from $6.8{\times}10^{-6}\;(granite plate)\;to\;75.0{\times}10^{-6}Bq/m^2-sec(brick)$ with the increasing order of granite plate, red brick, concrete wall, concrete block, concrete floor and brick. It showed that the CR39 radon cup can be efficiently utilized in measuring the radon-222 gas exhalation rate from building materials.

The Composition and Physico-chemcal Characteristics of school waste in B area, Kyunggi-do (경기도 B 지역 학교폐기물의 성상 및 물리∙화학적 특성)

  • In this study, the composition and physico-chemical characteristics of school waste which is located in B area, kyunggi-do was investigated. It is necessary to measure the characteristics of school waste to build the data-base for resource and recycling of waste. This school waste was composed of 12.25% of food wastes, 56.26% of papers, 9.26% of plastics&vinyls, 1.52% of textiles, 3.70% of wood, 0.11% of rubbers&leathers and others, respectively. Most of school wastes are mainly composed of paper and plastic waste and composition of combustible waste was about as 90%. From 3-components analysis, contents of moisture, combustible component, and ash was 5.72%, 88.29% and 5.98%, respectively. Moisture content was higher in Agricultural Dwelling school area compare to the urban dwelling school area. The chemical element of the school waste has the high order of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen on the dry basis of wastes and the low heating value of the MSW which is measured by calorimeter is shown as 3720.44kcal/kg.
