  • In this study, the design methodology of Radial Basis Function Neural Networks is developed with the aid of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy and also applied to the practical plastics sorting system. To identify black plastics such as ABS, PP, and PS, RBFNNs classifier as a kind of intelligent algorithms is designed. The dimensionality of the obtained input variables are reduced by using PCA and divided into several groups by using K-means clustering which is a kind of clustering techniques. The entire data is split into training data and test data according to the ratio of 4:1. The 5-fold cross validation method is used to evaluate the performance as well as reliability of the proposed classifier. In case of input variables and clusters equal to 5 respectively, the classification performance of the proposed classifier is obtained as 96.78%. Also, the proposed classifier showed superiority in the viewpoint of classification performance where compared to other classifiers.

  • Laser Scanning Unit (LSU), which is one of the core parts of laser printer, consists of LD Module, cylinder lens, polygon mirror and f$\theta$ lens. After making an initial design on each part, we optimized the one which satisfies the user specification. The optimized optical system has diffraction limited performance for the slit size of 2.7 mm$\times$1.6 mm, f$\theta$ characteristics less than 0.3% and field curvature less 1.2 mm. We also calcurate tolerance of each part based on RSS(Root Sum Square) method to manufacture LSU for mass production.

  • Laser heat source was used for automotive interior and exterior parts to reduce weights. Typically, 900's nm wavelength of laser has been widely used for polymer joining, however, the transmittance of the laser beam thorough clear polymers such as PMMA or PC has been an issue to overcome. To solve this issue, 1,940nm laser was applied on the clear polymer for the better absorption and 900nm laser beam was used for main laser for the joining. Conventional Gaussian or Elliptical heat source approximation has limitation in polymer which had deeper skin depth where major laser beam absorbs. To accurately simulate the physical laser beam absorption and joining optical properties were experimentally measured for the computer FEM simulation. The simulation results showed close correlation between theoretical and experimental results. The developed laser process is expected to increase productivity and gap closing which can cause failure of joining in laser material processing.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the shear bond strength of composite resin to dentin when etched with laser instead of phosphoric acid. Material and methods: Recently extracted forty molars, completely free of dental caries, were embedded into acrylic resin. After exposing dentin with diamond saw, teeth surface were polished with a series of SiC paper. The teeth were divided into four groups composed of 10 specimens each; 1) no surface treated group as a control 2) acid-etched with 35%-phosphoric acid 3) Er:YAG laser treated 4) Er,Cr:YSGG laser treated. A dentin bonding agent (Adapter Single Bond2, 3M/ESPE) was applied to the specimens and then transparent plastic tubes (3 mm of height and diameter) were placed on each dentin. The composite resin was inserted into the tubes and cured. All the specimens were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours and the shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine (Z020, Zwick, Germany). The data of tensile bond strength were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Duncan's test at ${\alpha}$= 0.05. Results: The bond strengths of Er:YAG laser-treated group was $3.98{\pm}0.88$ MPa and Er,Cr:YSGG laser-treated group showed $3.70{\pm}1.55$ MPa. There were no significant differences between two laser groups. The control group showed the lowest bond strength, $1.52{\pm}0.42$ MPa and the highest shear bond strength was presented in acid-etched group, $7.10{\pm}1.86$ MPa (P < .05). Conclusion: Laser-etched group exhibited significantly higer bond strength than that of control group, while still weaker than that of the phosphoric acid-etched group.

  • The application of 3D printing technology is expanding due to the production of the complex-shape parts and the one-step manufacturing process. Moreover, various technical solutions in 3D printing are emerging through continuous research and development. Representative technologies include SLS technology, in which a desired area is sintered and laminated by irradiating a powder-type material with a laser. In addition, high-performance engineering plastic parts are being manufactured in increasing numbers. In this study, tensile specimens were fabricated from polyamide 12, a widely available polymer, and the glass bead-reinforced polyamide 12. The specimen-build orientation was divided into 0°, 45°, and 90° on the fabrication platform, and the tensile test temperature was -25℃, 25℃, and 60℃. The test results showed that the tensile modulus of both materials decreases as the build orientation becomes closer to 90°. In addition, the tensile strength of glass bead-reinforced PA12 showed more dependence on the build orientation than PA12. In addition, the tensile modulus and tensile strength decreased with increasing test temperature.

  • The noncontact optical sensor using the hologram laser and automatic power controller is developed to measure a thickness of transparent objects and achieve excellent performance. Due to the contact between the tip of the sensor and the surface of objects, the tip is abraded. In addition the casting glass under high temperature results in extending the size of sensor body. The accuracy of the sensor is degraded due to these reasons. In this paper, to overcome these problems, we proposed a low cost non-contact optical sensor that is composed of a hologram laser unit used for optical pickup of CD player and a plastic lens. Therefore the problems caused by the contact sensor are solved by using the noncontact sensor. The noncontact sensor has to move toward the objects and obtain the focus error signal to measure a position of transparent objects. While the internal temperature of the sensor is controlled under ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}$, many trials shows ${\pm}2{\mu}m$ measurement error as excellent performance.

  • Using a line scan camera and a Galvano mirror, we constructed a high-speed line-scanning microscope that can generate 2D images ($8000{\times}8000pixels$) without any moving parts. The line scanner consists of a Galvano mirror and a cylindrical lens, which creates a line focus that sweeps over the sample. The measured resolutions in the x (perpendicular to line focus) and y (parallel to line focus) directions are both $2{\mu}m$, with a 2X scan lens and a 3X relay lens. This optical system is useful for measuring defects, such as spalling, chipping, delamination, etc., on the surface of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) holes after machining in conjunction with adjustments in the angle of LED lighting. Defects on the inner wall of holes are measured by line confocal laser scanning. This confocal method will be useful for analyzing defects after CFRP machining and for fast 3D image reconstruction.

  • Pulsed laser-based optical sensor monitoring systems for real time microplastic particle counting are proposed and developed in this study. To develop our real time monitoring system, we used a 450 nm pulsed laser and a photomultiplier with very high quantum efficiency. First, we demonstrated that the microplastic particle counting system could detect standard micro bead samples of 100, 250, and $500{\mu}m$ in river water. We then performed research concerning pulsed laser-based optical spectral sensor systems for real time microplastic monitoring. Additionally, we demonstrated that the real time microplastic remote monitoring system using LoRa communications could detect microplastic in the tap water resource protection area.

  • In this paper, laser-induced fluorescence properties of four plastics were characterized through spectrometer analysis for real-time microplastic counting. Recently, environmental problems related to microplastics have emerged. In order to detect microplastics, analysis methods such as FT-IR and Raman are used. However, they have the disadvantages of being time-consuming and requiring a pretreatment process. In most plastic products on the market, 10% to 30% of plasticizers and reinforcing agents are added. Therefore, most microplastics present in seawater and freshwater emit fluorescence signals by 270 nm UV light source regardless of their type due to their molecular structure due to additives. Real-time microplastics counting is possible more easily by using the proposed laser-induced fluorescence detection method because of the fluorescence expression characteristic of 340 nm that appears due to the plasticizer of plastics.

  • Additive manufacturing process technology, known as the 3D printing process, is expanding its utilization from simple model realization to commercialized part production based on continuous material development. Recently, research and development have been actively carried out to fabricate lightweight and high-strength parts using polymers, such as polyamide (polyamide), which is a high-strength engineering plastic material. In this study, the Izod impact characteristics were analyzed for polyamide 12 (PA12) materials. For the specimen production, selective laser sintering process technology, which has excellent mechanical properties of finished products, was applied. In addition, PA12 and glass bead reinforced PA12 materials were produced. The specimens were classified according to the production direction on the production platform, and each specimen was subjected to an Izod test at test temperatures of $-25^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and $60^{\circ}C$. As a result, the impact strength of PA12 and glass bead-reinforced PA12 of vertical direction specimens were 48.8% and 16.3% lower than those of the parallel specimens at a $25^{\circ}C$ test temperature and the impact strength of parallel specimens was improved by 46.5% and 20.4% at a test temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ compared to that at $-25^{\circ}C$.
