  • This study presents a simplifled calculation method for required ductility of coupling beams in precast coupled shear walls at preliminary seismic design stages. Deflection of precast coupled shear walls based on a continuum approach is combined with inelastic gap opening of horizontal connection of panels to provide a relationship between the system-level ductility and the element-level ductility in a precast coupled shear wall. The equation proposed herein for ductility requirement for coupling beams shows that higher stiffness and lower strength of coupling beams result in high ductility reuqirement. The equation also shows that the ductility requirement is proportional to the degree of gap opening of the story in question. However, the coupling beam ductility in higher stories are not affected by gap openings of horizontal connections of panel.

  • In seismic design procedure of precast concrete structure, it is important to assign ductility requirement on the connection element for a favorable failure mechanism. The purpose of this paper is to propose a simplified procedure to determine the required ductility of coupling beam in coupled precast shear wall for a lateral displacement ductility at the top of a structure. This study shows that an equation for ductility of cloupling beam is introduced on the basis of several basic assumption.

  • Coupled shear walls are effective lateral force resisting system in which coupling beams link individual walls. For improving the energy dissipation capacity of coupling beams, diagonal reinforcement details were developed. However, it is difficult to construct diagonal reinforced coupling beams due to the congestion of reinforcement in the beam. For resolving the problem, this study developed precast coupling beams with bundled diagonal reinforcement. To reduce the reinforcement congestion, bundled diagonal reinforcement were placed in the coupling beam. To evaluate the cyclic performance of coupling beams with bundled diagonal reinforcement, experimental test were conducted. For this purpose, two slender specimens with an aspect ratio of 3.5 were made and tested. It was observed that the cyclic performance of the coupling beam with bundled diagonal reinforcement was similar with that of the coupling beam with normal diagonal reinforcement placed according to design code to ACI 318-11.
