In this study, the soil characteristics are analyzed using the result of various soil tests as an object of the soil layer of natural slopes in landslides areas composed with gneiss, granite, and the tertiary sedimentary rock. To investigate the soil characteristics according to landslide and non landslide areas, soils are sampled from Jangheung, Sangju and Pohang. The landslides at three areas are occurred due to heavy rainfall in same time. The geology of Jangheung area, Sangju area and Pohang area is gneiss, granite, and the tertiary sedimentary rock, respectively. On the basis of the landslide data and the result of soil test, the soil characteristics at the landslide area and the differentiation between landslide area and non landslide area are analyzed. However soil characteristics have a little differentiation to geological condition, the uniformity coefficient and the coefficient of gradation of soils at the landslide area is larger than those of soils at the non landslide area. Also, the proportion of fine particle of soils at the landslide area is higher. The plastic limit of soils sampled from the granite and the sedimentary rock regions is larger than that sampled from the gneiss region. However the liquid limit is irrelevant to the geological condition. Also, the consistency of soils at the landslide area is smaller. The natural moisture content of soils in the sedimentary rock regions is larger than that of the granite and gneiss. It is mainly influenced by mineral composition, soil layer structure, weathering condition, and so on. The soils sampled from landslide area have higher porosity and lower density than those from non landslide area. It means that the soils of landslide area have poor particle size distribution and loose density. Therefore, the terrain slope with poor distribution and loose density is vulnerable to occur in landslides. Also, landslides are occurred in the terrain slope with high permeability. The permeability is mainly influenced by the soil characteristics such as particle size distribution, porosity, particle structure, and the geological origins such as weathering, sedimentary environment. Meanwhile, the shear strength of soils is little difference according to the geological condition. But, the internal friction angle of soils sampled from the landslide area is lower than that of soils from the non landslide area. Therefore, the terrain slope with low internal friction angle is more vulnerable to the landslide.

This study was to identify the material characteristics and provenance of the crucibles, potteries and roof tiles from the Wonsinheungdong site in Daejeon, Korea. Similar mineral composition of each samples showed by microscopic observation and X-ray diffraction analysis. However, wall thickness and mineral characterization of each ceramic artifacts are quite different. The pottery is characterized by thin wall with 0.5 to 0.7 cm and fine grained clay matrix. While the crucible and roof tile has thick wall with 1.3 to 2.5 cm, poorly sorted texture of many quarz, orthoclase and plagioclase whithin ceramic fabric. And large elonagated voids formed by hydrocarbone of straw during the firing and loose matrix obseved in crucible. All ceramic samples and ground soil of the site show similar mineralogical characteristics geochemical behavior and clay-mineralization degree. This indicates making that the soil is probable to be a raw material of all ceramic from the Wonsinheungdong site. Also, firing temperature of most ceramic artifacts are estimated as 850 of all ceramic from the Wonsinheungdong site. Also, firing temperature of most ceramic artifacts are estimated as 850 to $950^{\circ}C$ but hardest pottery fired high temperature between 1,050 to $1,150^{\circ}C$. The vitreous molten materials interpreted in slag included segregation of copper and tin. But it can not exclude the possibility that the glass molten material because observed reddish and greenish vitreous fine structure under microscopic.

This study aimed to identify differences in soil properties and geological characteristics between slow-moving landslide prone areas and areas without landslide (control areas) in the Republic of Korea. During this 3-year field surveys (2019-2021), 11 soil and geological parameters were measured at 300 sites, i.e., 107 slow-moving landslide prone areas and 193 control areas. T-tests were conducted to identify differences in field-observed parameters between the two areas, followed by χ2-tests and density plots considering distribution patterns of the sample groups. We identified statistically significant differences between the areas in terms of soil internal friction angle, weathered rock thickness, bedrock thickness, and number of major geological anomaly zones. In conclusion, slow-moving landslide prone areas exhibited significant differences in geological characteristics, such as stratum thickness and presence of anomaly zones, compared with the control areas. To better understand the relationship between the geological characteristics identified in this study and the occurrence of slow-moving landslides, further field data collection and systematic analyses are warranted.

In site characterization of high-level radioactive waste, discontinuity(joint) distribution and rock mass classification, which are key evaluation parameters in the rock engineering field, were evaluated using deep boreholes in the Wonju granite and Chuncheon granite, which belong to Mesozoic Jurassic era. To evaluate joint distribution characteristics, fracture zones and joint surfaces extracted from ATV data were used, and major joint sets were evaluated along with joint frequency according to depth, dip direction, and dip. Both the Wonju and Chuncheon granites that were studied showed a tendency for the frequency of joints to increase linearly with depth, and joints with high angles were relatively widely distributed. In addition, relatively large amounts of weathering tended to occur even in deep depth due to groundwater inflow through high-angle joints. RQD values remained consistently low even at considerable depth. Meanwhile, joint groups with low angles showed different joint characteristics from joint sets with high angles. Rock mass classification was performed based on RMR system, and along with rock mass classification for 50 m intervals where uniaxial compressive strength was performed, continuous rock mass classification according to depth was performed using velocity log data and geostatistical techniques. The Wonju granite exhibited a superior rock mass class compared to the Chuncheon granite. In the 50 m interval and continuous rock mass classification, the shallow part of the Wonju granite showed a higher class than the deep part, and the deep part of the Chuncheon granite showed a higher class than the shallow part.

In this study, the effect of water content condition was investigated on the Mohr-Coulomb shear strength parameters which are commonly used as the input data in the soil slope analysis. For the purpose, a series of direct shear test was conducted in different water content conditions on the two types of weathered soils and a dam core material, obtained from the domestic slope construction sites and the dam construction site, respectively. The comparisons between the values of the Mohr-Coulomb ${\phi}_{peak}$ and $c_{peak}$, estimated from the relationships between the normal stress and the peak shear stress for the samples in the four different water content conditions (i.e., dry side, optimum, wet side, and saturated), showed that overall, the values of $c_{peak}$ decreased gradually while those of ${\phi}_{peak}$ did not vary much with increasing the water content. A rough estimate for the varying ratio of the values of ${\phi}_{peak}$ and $c_{peak}$ indicated that the values of $c_{peak}$ decreased by every 25% of the $c_{peak}$ values in dry side, while those of ${\phi}_{peak}$ were constant, as the water content condition changed from dry, optimum, and wet to saturated, respectively.
This study is to examine the engineering characteristics of colunmar joints in Mudeugsan National Park, a global geopark. For these purposes, physical and mechanical properties of Mudeungsan Tuff, evaluation for the weathering degree of columnar joints, and crack behavior monitoring in columnar joints were conducted. The physical properties of Mudeungsan tuff were 1.02% for the average porosity, 0.38% for the average absorption, 2.69 g/㎤ for the average specific gravity, and 4,948 m/s for the average elastic wave velocity. Its mechanical properties were 337 MPa for the average uniaxial compressive strength, 68 GPa for the average elastic modulus, 0.29 for the average Poisson's ratio, 41.3 MPa for the average cohesion strength, and 62.8° for the average friction angle. the average rebound Q-value of the silver Schmidt hammer for the three columnar joint blocks at the Ipseok-dae was shown as 49.3. when this value is converted into uniaxial compressive strength, it becomes 70.5 MPa, which is about 21% of the uniaxial compression strength of Mudeungsan tuff. In addition, according to the results of crack monitoring measurements for the three columnar joint blocks at the Ipseok-dae, the crack behavior is less than 1 mm, so it is believed that its behavior in Ipseak-dae columnar joints has hardly occured to date.
Recently, the more potential waste sites are being required as increasing the demand of better human life. But the construction of waste disposals has many restrictions because of lack of good quality clay and high cost of liners. So, in this study, we studied the liner materials to develop more cheaper soil liner that can be satisfied the environmental criterion for the coefficient of permeability and shear strength. A series of compaction test and triaxial (consolidation, permeability, and shear) tests were performed to obtain the optimized weight ratio of Bentonite-Soil mixture (B/S) including the least amount of bentonite. A series of soil tests were performed to acquire the appropriate weathered granite soil-bentonite mixture that is satisfied the environmental criterion of soil liner($k=1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$). At first, weathered granite soils were classified with four different particle-size soils, and B/S ratio was increased as 5% step for each particle-size. The test results showed that in case of weathered granite soil passing through No. 100 sieve, B/S=15% satisfied the soil liner criterion. The measured coefficient of permeability and the Chapuis's two equations were also compared. And a predicting equation for the coefficient of permeability was suggested, which is suitable for the mixture soil with the B/S ratio used in this study. The optimal weight ratio for the mixture soils used in this study was 15% in the both cases of permeability and shear strength.
The comprehensive tests on unsaturated weathered granite soils are carried out to obtain the soil-water characteristic curve that is the one of the essential requisites to study the unsaturated soil. The weathered granite soils were obtained at Palgong mountain in Daegu. The existing test results have been carried out without overburden pressures and volume changes. In this study, the volumetric pressure plate extractor is improved to consider two factors such as overburden pressure and volume change. The applied overburden pressures were 0, 25, 50, 75, 100kPa and volume changes were measured at each phase. he results of this study are summarized as follows: As the overburden pressure increases, the volumetric water content decreases at the same matric suction and the air entry value increases and gradient of curve at the transition zone and the size of the hysteresis loops decreases. As the overburden pressure increases, the degree of saturation increases at the same matric suction and degree of saturation of the wetting curve is higher than that of dry curve. The SWCC with volume changes are slightly larger than those without volume changes. The general equation proposed by Fredlund & Xing(1994) to fit the experimental result of the SWCC indicates good agreement. The empirical parameters a, n, m as overburden pressure show similar inclination as the existing results.
To analyze the crustal velocity structures beneath 21 broadband seismic stations in Gangwon Province, South Korea, we first applied the H-κ stacking method to 139 teleseismic event data (Mw ≥ 5.8 and the epicentral distance of 30° - 90°) occurring between March 18, 2019 and December 31, 2022 to estimate the Moho depths and Vp/Vs ratios beneath each station. The Moho depths and Vp/Vs ratios from the H-κ stacking method range from 24.9 to 33.2 km depth and 1.695 - 1.760, respectively, and the estimated Vp/Vs ratios were applied to the joint inversion of receiver functions and surface wave dispersion to obtain 1-D crustal velocity models beneath each station. The resulting Moho depths range from 25.9 to 33.7 km depth, similar to the results from the H-κ stacking method. Moho depth results from the both methods are generally consistent with Airy's isostasy. The 1-D crustal velocity models confirm that the existence of 2 km thick low-velocity layers with P-wave velocities of 5 km/s or less at some stations in the Taebaeksan basin, and at the stations CHNB and GAPB in northern Gangwon Province, which are located above the Cenozoic sedimentary layer. The station SH2B, although not overlying a sedimentary layer, has a low P-wave velocity near the surface, which is probably due to various factors such as weathering of the bedrock. We also observe a velocity inversion with decreasing velocity with depth at all stations within 4 - 12 km depths, and mid-crustal discontinuities possibly due to density differences in the rocks at around 10 km depth below some stations.
U-Reuk, a laureate musician in the days of King Jin-Heung, Silla Dynasty, built the Eui Rim Reservoir about 1,400 years ago. This was one of the oldest man-made reservoir. The embankment of the reservoir collapsed by the clumsy artificial drainage on August 19, 1972 when the heavy rainfall of 462 mm/day caused a dangerous overflow of the reservoir. The result of the study on the mystic ancient embankment techniques are as follows: 1. Sandy loam derived from the weathering of granite which is the most widely distributed rock type in the area, was used in the embankment. Large size logs (embankment core) of 30-50 cm in diameter were buried lengthwise along the embankment. 2. The six stocks of Pinus densiflora, 3 stocks of Quercus acutissima, 1 stock of Quercus variabilis and 1 stock of Popolus maximowiczii, altogether 11 stocks are identified. Forest types in the nearby area during the days of the reservoir construction seem to be includde a considerable number of Pinus densiflora, Quercus and Populus species. 3. The angle of repose of the earth materials is taken into account during the embankment. On top of the embankment double layers of clay (20-30 cm indepth) were spread and consolidated. Layer of litter of 20-40 cm in deep covered on the clay layer of the embankment completely, and another layer of clay was consolidated over the litter. Finally, a layer of stones of 10-30 cm in diameter and clay (yellow soil layer) toped the embankment. 4. At the lower part of the embankment clay layer was thicker and became thinner as it goes upwards. At every layer, soil was consolidated and burned. When embankment was completed, it was covered evenly with heavy clay, and finally it was topped with general soil. 5. The heavy clay layer on the inner slope of the embankment showed gray phenomena and litter remained raw humus layer. The clay layer functioned as rubber in the water, and raw humus layer prevented water from seepages. Thus, the embankment was solidly built in this way. 6. The ancient embankment techniques used soils conveyed from nearby area taking the angle of repose into account. Once embankment was completed, clay and litter layers were added to have a plasticity and to withstand the water pressure. 7. It is an excellent technique that the reservoir was constructed with least labor for maximum effects while the recent embankment techniques requires a large amount of labor.
