  • This study deals with the design of a bi-directional damper using a tuned liquid damper(TLD) and a tuned liquid column damper(TLCD) for a SDOF building. Two dampers are usually needed to reduce wind-induced responses of tall buildings since they are along and across wind ones. The proposed damper has the advantage of controlling both responses with a single damper. The damper used in this study behaves as both a TLCD in a specific translational direction and a TLD in the other orthogonal direction. This paper presents experimental verification to confirm its control performance. First, shaking table test is carried out to investigate reducing responses by the damper. Control performance of the damper is expressed by the transfer function from shaking table accelerations to SDOF building ones. Testing results show that the damper reduced bi-directional responses of a SDOF building. Also, it reduced torsion responses.

  • This paper evaluated the safety and serviceability of a building structure considering the multi-hazard and proposed TMD-based adaptive smart control system to improve the structural performance. To make multi-hazard loads, an artificial earthquake and artificial wind loads were generated based on representative regions of strong seismicity and strong wind in U.S.A. The safety and serviceability of a 20-story example building structure were investigated using the generated artificial loads. A smart TMD was employed to improve the safety and serviceability of the example structure and its capacity of structural performance improvement was evaluated. The smart TMD was comprised of a MR (magnetorheological) damper. Numerical analysis showed that the example building structure could not satisfy the design limit of safety and serviceability with respect to multi-hazard. The smart TMD effectively reduced the seismic responses associated with the safety and wind-induce responses associated with serviceability.

  • In this study, the possibility of vibration control of high-rise building structures by applying top-story isolation has been investigated. To this end, El Centro NS (1940) earthquake load is applied to 20- and 50-story building structures for numerical analysis. Artificial wind loads are used to evaluate the serviceability of example structures against wind vibration. As the number of isolated stories of example buildings is changed, structural responses has been evaluated to investigate optimal isolated building mass. And the natural period of isolation systems for top-story isolation is varied to investigate the improvement of control performance compared with the fixed base structure. Based on the analytical results, the top-story isolation system can be used as a hued mass damper and effectively reduce the structural responses of high-rise buildings against wind and seismic loads.

  • In order to investigate the cause of damage of the offshore meteorological tower, the measured wind speed data were analyzed, the dynamic displacement due to fluctuating wind load and wave load was calculated, and the fatigue was examined for vortex-induced vibration. It was confirmed from the results that the vibration lasting for four hours occurred in the meteorological tower when the maximum wind speeds for 10 minutes were compared for both the vane anemometer and ultrasonic anemometer. The effect of the gust wind on the dynamic response of the meteorological tower was greater than the wave. However, the combined forces acting on the meteorological tower was much lower than the design force even though the wind and wave loads were simultaneously applied. The vortex-induced vibration seemed to be cause of the fatigue failure in the connecting bolts. The destruction of the offshore meteorological tower was considered to be a vortex-induced vibration, not a fluctuating fluid flows.

  • Dynamic behaviors of the tunnel linings of curved tunnels with various curvatures are investigated to examine the effect of wind loads due to passing vehicles. In the case without backfill, the responses of the tunnel lining should be considered to examine the clearance of the lining. A steel tunnel lining is selected to see the influence of the wind load upon the tunnel lining more clearly. The wind pressure upon the lining is simplified into the pressure and suction while the vehicle passing the loading positions. As the radius of curvature decreases, the response decreases, showing that the strength against the deformation is found to increase since the asymmetry of the deformation shape is reduced. It is found that the responses increase as the passing vehicle speed increases.

  • In this paper, excitation systems using an active tuned mass damper (ATMD) are presented in order to simulate the wind induced responses of a building structure. The actuator force for the excitation systems is calculated by using the inverse transfer function of a target structural response to the actuator. The analyses results from a 76-story benchmark building problem in which wind load obtained by wind tunnel test is given, indicate that the excitation system installed at a specific floor can approximately embody the structural responses induced by the wind load applied to each floor of the structure. The excitation system designed by the proposed method can be effectively used for evaluating the wind response characteristics of a practical building structure and for obtaining an accurate analytical model of the building under wind load.

  • This paper presents a rational polynomial approximation method to estimate modal parameters of wind excited structures using incomplete noisy measurements of structural responses and partial measurements of wind velocities only. A stochastic model of the excitation wind force acting on the structure is estimated from partial measurements of wind velocities. Then the transfer functions of the structure are approximated as rational polynomial functions. From the poles and zeros of the estimated rational polynomial functions, the modal parameters, such as natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes are extracted. Since the frequency characteristics of wind forces acting on structures can be assumed as a smooth Gaussian process especially around the natural frequencies of the structures according to the central limit theorem (Brillinger, 1969; Yaglom, 1987), the estimated modal parameters are robust and reliable with respect to the assumed stochastic input models. To verify the proposed method, the modal parameters of a TV transmission tower excited by gust wind are estimated. Comparison study with the results of other researchers shows the efficacy of the suggested method.

  • Serviceability of buildings is affect by excessive acceleration experienced at the top floors in wind storms that may cause discomfort to the occupants. Tuned liquid damper(TLD) and multiple tuned liquid damper(MTLD) are passive control devices that consists of rigid tank filled with liquid to suppress the vibration of structures. This TLD and MTLD are attributable to several potential advantages - low costs; easy to install in existing structures; effective even for small-amplitude vibrations. In this paper, the behavior of TLD and MTLD are investigated analytically and wind tunnel test of high-frequency force balance.

  • The design and performance of HTMD(hybrid tuned mass dampers) are evaluated for the response control of a md excited 76-story benchmark building. When a HTMD utilizes active control forces, the optimally designed TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) generates the modal separation at the first natural frequency resulting in difficulties for applying active control forces additionally. Whereas, the modal separation does no occur if the un is designed with the non-optimally designed TMD is used. Therefore, the response control performance of the HTMD with a non-optimally designed TMD is better that one with an optimally designed TMD. Further, the non-optimally designed TMD has an advantage of smaller stroke than the optimally designed TMD relieving the difficulty of limited strokes.
