  • In this paper, a study on the prediction method of basic wind speed at the construction site of long-span bridge using short-term measurements was conducted. To determine the basic wind speed in the wind resistant design for the long-span bridge away from the weather station, statistical analysis of long-term data at site is required. Wind observation mast was installed at site, and short-term measurements were gathered and the correlation analysis between the site and the station was done using regression analysis and MCP(Measure-Correlate-Predict). The long-term wind data of the site was obtained from correlation formula after topographical revision of long-term data of the station. And basic wind speed could be estimated by extreme probability distribution analysis. The research results show that the wind speed by regression analysis is predicted lower than by MCP and after this study a series of correlation analyses at several sites will show clearly the difference two methods. And also a quality control of long-term wind data is very important in estimation of wind speed.

  • The crop damage caused by strong wind was predicted using the wind speed data available from Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA). Wind speed data measured at 19 automatic weather stations in 2012 were compared with wind data available from the KMA's digital forecast. Linear regression equations were derived using the maximum value of wind speed measurements for the three-hour period prior to a given hour and the digital forecasts at the three-hour interval. Estimates of daily maximum wind speed were obtained from the regression equation finding the greatest value among the maximum wind speed at the three-hour interval. The estimation error for the daily maximum wind speed was expressed using normal distribution and Weibull distribution probability density function. The daily maximum wind speed was compared with the critical wind speed that could cause crop damage to determine the level of stages for wind damage, e.g., "watch" or "warning." Spatial interpolation of the regression coefficient for the maximum wind speed, the standard deviation of the estimation error at the automated weather stations, the parameters of Weibull distribution was performed. These interpolated values at the four synoptic weather stations including Suncheon, Namwon, Imsil, and Jangsu were used to estimate the daily maximum wind speed in 2012. The wind damage risk was determined using the critical wind speed of 10m/s under the assumption that the fruit of a pear variety Mansamgil would begin to drop at 10 m/s. The results indicated that the Weibull distribution was more effective than the normal distribution for the estimation error probability distribution for assessing wind damage risk.

  • As the wind has become one of the fastest growing renewable energy sources, the key issue of wind energy conversion systems is on how to efficiently operate the wind turbines in a wide range of wind speeds. In general, the wind speed is the main factor that impact on the dynamics of wind turbine system. Wind turbine algorithms are thus required to improve the performance of wind speed measurements. However, the accurate measurement of the effective wind speed using wind gauge and similar sensors is difficult such that control systems are needed for wind speed estimation using various techniques. Therefore, this research suggests the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) method for tracking the wind speed based on neural networks. Design experiments were carried out in laboratory environment to validate the application of the proposed method.

  • This study presents rational methods for probability-based estimates of basic design wind speeds in Korea and proposes a risk-based nation-wide map of design wind speeds. The paper examines the fittings of the extreme Type I mode to largest yearly non-typhoon wind data from long-term records, and to largest monthly non-typhoon wind data from short-term records. For the estimation of the extreme typhoon wins speed distribution, an indirect analytical method based on a Monte-Carlo simulation is applied to typhoon-prone regions. The basic desig wind speeds for typhoon and non-typhoon winds at the sites of concern are made to be obtained from the mixed model given as a product of the two distributions. The results of this study show that the proposed models and methods provide a practicable tool for the development of the risk-based basic design wind speed and the design wind map from short-term station records currently available in Korea.

  • A wind-speed estimation at the arbitrary elevations is key component for the design of the offshore wind energy structures and the computation of the wind-wave generation. However, the wind-speed estimation of the target elevation has been carried out by using the typical functions and their typical parameters, e.g., power and logarithmic functions because the available wind speed data is limited to the specific elevation, such as 2~3m, 10 m, and so on. In this study, the parameters of the vertical profile functions are estimated with optimal and analyzed the parameter ranges using the HeMOSU-1 platform wind data monitored at the eight different locations. The results show that the mean value of the exponent of the power function is 0.1, which is significantly lower than the typically recommended value, 0.14. The values of the exponent, the friction velocity, and the roughness parameters are in the ranges 0.0~0.3, 0~10 (m/s), and 0.0~1.0 (m), respectively. The parameter ranges differ from the typical ranges because the atmospheric stability condition is assumed as the neutral condition. To improve the estimation accuracy, the atmospheric condition should be considered, and a more general (non-linear) vertical profile functions should be introduced to fit the diverse profile patterns and parameters.

  • As wind has become one of the fastest growing renewable energy sources, the key issue of wind energy conversion systems is how to efficiently operate the wind turbines in a wide range of wind speeds. The wind speed has a huge impact on the dynamic response of wind turbine. For this purpose, many control algorithms are in need for a method to measure wind speed to increase performance. Unfortunately, no accurate measurement of the effective wind speed is online available from direct measurements, which means that it must be estimated in order to make such control methods applicable in practice. In this paper, a new method based on Kalman filter and artificial neural network is presented for the estimation of the effective wind speed. To verify the performance of the proposed scheme, some simulation studies are carried out.

  • In order to estimate mean wind speed in the Gwangyang-Myodo Region, the probability distribution model of extreme values has been used in the statistical analysis of joint distribution probability of daily maximum wind speed and corresponding direction in this paper. For this purpose frequency of daily maximum records at respective stations is inquired into and sample of largest yearly wind speed of sixteen compass direction and non-direction is extracted from daily data of maximum wind speed and appropriate direction of the meteorological observing stations nearby the bridge construction site. These extreme speed records are applied to Gumbel and Weibull distribution model and parameters are estimated through method of moment and method of least squares etc. And also, distribution and parameters are inquired into whether it is fitted through the probability plot correlation coefficient examination. From fitted parameters the largest yearly wind speed of sixteen compass direction and non-direction is extrapolated taking into account factors regarding sample size of data and distance from the bridge construction site according to the appropriate stations.

  • The structural stability as well as economical efficiency of the wind sensitive structures are strongly dependant on accurate evaluation of the design wind speed. Present study demonstrates a useful wind data obtained at the wind monitoring tower in the Kwangyang Suspension Bridge site. Moreover the Measure-Correlate-Predict (MCP) method has been applied to estimate the long-term wind data at the bridge site based on the wind data at the local weather station. The measured data indicate that the turbulent intensities and roughness exponents are strongly affected by the wind direction and surrounding topography. The new design wind speed based on MCP method is 20m/s lower than that at the original estimation, and the resulting design wind load is only 36% of the old prediction. The field measurement of wind data is recommended to ensure the economical and secure design of the wind sensitive structures because the measured wind data reveal much different from the estimated one due to local topography.
