  • An experimental study has been peformed on the pool-boiling critical heat flux (CHF) phenomenon on downward -facing plates. The CHF for inclinations of -90$^{\circ}$(horizontally downward position), -88$^{\circ}$, -86$^{\circ}$, -84$^{\circ}$, -60$^{\circ}$ and -40$^{\circ}$ were measured using plate-type test sections of 20mm 200mm and 25mm 200mm in a pool of saturated water under atmospheric pressure. The measured CHF was lower for the wider test section and decreased as its orientation approached to the horizontally downward position. The lower CHF can be attributable to the increased difficulty for the bubbles in escaping from the heater surface. When compared with the previous works, the overall trends were similar; however, a transition angle, at which the decrease rate in the CHF was changed, was observed in the vicinity of -80$^{\circ}$.

  • 'Nanofluids' means suspension of common fluids with particles of the order of nanometers in size. The present research is an experimental study of critical heat flux (CHF) behavior in pool boiling of $water-TiO_2$ nanofluids under atmospheric pressure. CHF for pure water and $water-TiO_2$ nanofluids were respectively measured using disk-type copper block heater with 10mm diameter, and CHF of water with surfactant was also measured to consider the effect of surfactant used to disperse nanoparticle. The results show a large increase in CHF for $water-TiO_2$ nanofluids compared to pure water. After CHF occurred, heat flux in pool boiling for $water-TiO_2$ nanofluids was maintained in considerable value, but not for pure water.

  • Pool boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux (CHF) of water-based nanofluids with alumina and titania nanoparticles of 0.01% by volume were investigated on a disk heater at saturated and atmospheric conditions. The experimental results showed that the boiling in nanofluids caused the considerable increase in CHF on the flat surface heater. It was revealed by visualization of the heater surface subsequent to the boiling experiments that a major amount of nanoparticles deposited on the surface during the boiling process. Pool boiling of pure water on the surface modified by such nanoparticle deposition resulted in the same CHF increases as what boiling nanofluids, thus suggesting the CHF enhancement in nanofluids was an effect of the surface modification through the nanoparticle deposition during nanofluid boiling. Possible reasons for CHF enhancement in pool boiling of nanofluids are discussed with surface property changes caused by the nanoparticle deposition.

  • It has been well known that pool boiling CHF in nanofluids compared to pure water significantly increase due to the deposition of nanoparticles on heater surface. This study concerns the characteristics of the nanoparticle deposition layer and its influence on CHF. Pool boiling experiments were carried out with 0.01vol.% water-$TiO_2$ nanofluids to obtain various nanoparticle-deposited heaters. CHF on the prepared heaters was measured during pool boiling in pure water. The heater surfaces were visualized using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and also characterized using contact angle and capillarity. The results showed that the CHF enhancement in nanofluids was completely dependent upon the structural and physicochemical characteristics of the nanoparticle deposition layer.

  • Pool boiling critical heat flux (CHF) of nanofluids with oxide nanoparticles of $TiO_2$ or $Al_2O_3$ was experimentally investigated under atmospheric pressure. The results showed that a dispersion of oxide nanoparticles significantly enhances the CHF over that of pure water. Moreover it was found that nanoparticles were seriously deposited on the heater surface during pool boiling of nanofluids. CHF of pure water on a nanoparticle-deposited surface, which is produced during the boiling of nanofluids, was not less than that of nanofluids. The result reveals that the CHF enhancement of nanofluids is absolutely attributed to modification of the heater surface by the nanoparticle deposition. Then, the nanoparticle-deposited surface was characterized with parameters closely related to pool boiling CHF, such as surface roughness, contact angle, and capillary wicking. Finally, reason of the CHF enhancement of nanofluids is discussed based on the changes of the parameters.

  • The characteristics of boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux (CHF) behavior of nano-fluids were studied by using various sized silver and alumina nanoparticles. The diameter of nanoparticles was from 2 nm to 250 nm for silver and from 20nm to 40nm for alumina. Pool boiling characteristics and CHF enhancement of nano-fluids with different sized nanoparticles were compared with those of pure water and each nano-fluids. The experiment was performed at atmospheric pressure and the temperature of the pool was maintained constantly by using a flat immersed heater. The concentration of nano-fluids was uniform in all experiments as 0.01g/liter. The results showed that the measured boiling curves were shifted to the right. It demonstrated that the occurrence of nucleate boiling regime in nano-fluids retarded, compared with that of pure water. Also, in nano-fluids, the boiling curves showed that CHF of nano-fluids is significantly enhanced and represented the effect of particle size on boiling characteristics.

  • In this study, a smooth flat surface, low fin, Turbo-B, and Thermoexcel-E surfaces are used to examine the effect of the flow velocity on the pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) and critical heat fluxes (CHFs). HTCs and CHFs are measured on a smooth square heater of $9.53{\times}9.53mm^2$ at $60^{\circ}C$ in a pool of pure water at various fluid velocities of 0, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 m/s. Test results show that for all surfaces, CHFs obtained with flow are higher than those obtained without flow. CHFs of the low fin surface are higher than those of the Turbo-B and Thermoexcel-E surfaces due largely to the increase in surface area and sufficient fin spaces for the easy removal of bubbles. CHFs of the low fin surface show even 5 times higher CHFs as compared to the plain surface. On the other hand, both Turbo-B and Thermoexcel-E surfaces do not show satisfactory results because their pore sizes are too small and water bubbles easily cover them. At low heat fluxes of less than $50kW/m^2$, HTCs increase as the flow velocity increases for all surfaces. In conclusion, a low fin geometry is good for application to steam generators in nuclear power plants.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of the inclination angle on the nucleate pool boiling of saturated water at atmospheric pressure. We considered an annulus with a gap of 5 mm and a bottom opening. The inner tube of the annulus was heated, and the outer diameter and the length of the tube were 25.4 mm and 500 mm, respectively. The inclination angle was varied from horizontal to vertical. The results were compared to those for an annulus with a larger gap and a single tube. In the small-gap annulus, the effect of the inclination angle on the heat transfer was not significant. However, an early onset of the critical heat flux was observed at 80 kW/$m^2$ when the annulus was horizontal. Liquid agitation and bubble coalescence were considered to be the major heat-transfer mechanisms.
