  • Seven cultivars of hard and soft wheat were evaluated by regression analysis for five bread quality characteristics to determine varietal response to environments. The regression coefficients were used as the measure of adaptability, and determination coefficients were used as the measure of stability by models of Eberhart and Russell. Phenotypic, genotypic and environmental correlation coefficient estimated for 6 characters tested in this experiments. Statistical analyses confirmed the strong influence of environment on five bread quality. A significant positive correlation exists between protein content, sedimentation value, pelshenke value and specific loaf volume. High heritability was found for sedimentation value ($h^2=0.747$), protein content ($h^2=0.557$) and specific loaf volume ($h^2=0.551$).

  • To analyze the possibility for the genetic improvement at the early period at 60 days of age in tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Genetic parameters on eight traits, total length (TL), standrad length (SL), head length (HL), body depth (BD), body height at the origin of dorsal fin (BH1), length from the origin of dorsal fin to the origin of dorsal fin (BH2), snout length (SNL), and body weight (BW), were estimated by sib analysis. Heritabilities estimated from sire, dam and full-sib components were moderately high in all metric traits, ranged 0.08$\~$0.70, 0.22$\~$0.41 and 0.18$\~$0.55, respectively. Those of SL from sire, dam, and full-sib component were estimated as 0.13, 0.22, and 0.18, respectively, Besides BH1, BH2 also showed high heritabilities, $h^2_s$ (0.08), $h^2_d$ (0.38) and $h^2_{s+d}$ (0.23), indicating that it would be a new production-related metric trait for selection. Among the metric traits, phenotypic and genetic correlation coefficients were ranged from 0,86 to 0.97 and from 0.90 to 0.99, respectively. Thus, genetic improvement would be possible at the early growth rate by the individual selection in tilapia.

  • This study was conducted to estimate genetic parameters for ultrasound and carcass traits in Hanwoo. Heritabilities and genetic and phenotypic correlations were estimated for carcass and ultrasound measurements collected from Hanwoo cows (n=312) born at Hanwoo experiment station. Traits evaluated were eye muscle area (EMA), backfat thickness (BF), marbling score (MS) from carcass, and ultrasound eye muscle area (UEMA), ultrasound backfat (UBF), and ultrasound marbling score (UMS). Parameters were estimated using multi-trait animal models byderivative-free restricted maximum likelihood procedures. Estimated heritabilities for UBF, UEMA and UMS were 0.43, 0.23 and 0.32, while heritabilities for BF, EMA and MS were 0.33, 0.13 and 0.33 in fattened cows, respectively. Genetic correlations between ultrasound and carcass measurements were estimated to -0.19, -0.61, and -0.36 for UBF: UEMA, UBF: UMS, and UEMA: UMS in fattened cows, respectively. Phenotypic correlations between ultrasound and carcass measurements were 0.03, 0.13 and 0.26 for UBF: UEMA, UBF: UMS, and UEMA: UMS in fattened cows, respectively. As for the steer, genetic correlations between ultrasound and carcass measurements were 0.36, -0.80 and 0.27 for UBF: UEMA, UBF: UMS, and UEMA: UMS in steers, respectively. Phenotypic correlations between ultrasound and carcass measurements were 0.13, 0.07 and 0.41 for UBF: UEMA, UBF: UMS, and UEMA: UMS in steers, respectively. In conclusion, this finding would be very useful to implement into Hanwoo breeding program.

  • The repeatabilities on Yolk percentage and yolk to albumen (Y:A) ratio of the eggs produced consecutively were investigated. The differences between two yolk lines in major egg characteristics were also evaluated. The investigations using one hundred ISA-Brown layers were conducted at 29 wk, 33 wk, 38 wk, and 43 wk of age. At the initiated age (29 wk of age) of the experiments, the birds producing eggs with lower or higher Y:A ratio than the overall mean Y:A ratio were classified as Low Yolk Line (LYL) or High Yolk Line (HYL), respectively. Overall, the eggs of LYL were significantly (P<0.05) lighter in yolk weight and lower in yolk percentage for the whole egg weight and Y:A ratio, but heavier in egg weight, albumen weight, and shell weight than those of HYL. The overall mean correlations among the three consecutive laying days in Y:A ratio showed highly significant (P<0.001) in both lines. At four different ages, the mean phenotypic correlation coefficients (r$_{p}$) among the three consecutive laying days in Y:A ratio also had very high significant(P<0.01 ~ 0.001) positive values. The egg weight was more closely associated with albumen weight than with yolk weight in both yolk lines.s.

  • This experiment was conducted to compare heterogeneity for the variance in dairy cattle population and to induce homogeneity of variance using 502,228 performance test records of dairy cattle. The estimates of heritability for milk yields, fat yields and protein yields were 0.28, 0.26 and 0.24, respectively and the estimate of average breeding value by birth year was lower in HV (heterogenous variance) model than in animal model, collectively. The average breeding values of milk yields, fat yields and protein yields for 545 sire bulls applicable to the criteria of interbull MACE programme were 453.54kg, 10.75kg and 14.33kg, respectively and when the heterogeneity was adjusted they were 432.06kg, 10.15kg and 13.40kg, respectively, which were lower in all milk traits collectively. In animal model, coefficients of phenotypic correlation between dataset I and II were 0.839 in milk yields, 0.821 in fat yields, and 0.837 in protein yields, while in HV model, they were 0.841 in milk yields, 0.820 in fat yields, and 0.836 in protein yields, showing similar results in 2 models. When compared using animal model and HV model, the regression coefficient for ratio of number of daughters by calving year of milk yields increased from 15.157 to 16.105 and that of fat yields increased from =0.227 to =0.196, but that of protein yields decreased from 0.630 to 0.586.

  • This study was performed to obtain the effective selection informations for improvement of quality and increase of yield in red pepper. The eight parents and twenty eight crosses from partial diallel were used as materials for estimation of correlations among the pericarp characters, viz, fruit length, fruit width, pericarp thickness (fresh and dry) and pericarp weight (fresh and dry), between pericarp weight and seed weight and between pericarp weight and the percent of seed weight/pericarp weight and path coefficients on fresh and dry pericarp weight. Results were as follows. In $F_1s$, fresh and dry pericarp weight had positive correlations with fruit length, fruit width, and pericarp thickness. Fresh pericarp weight was also positively correlated with dry pericarp weight. Dry pericarp thickness had a negative correlation with fruit length but had positive correlations with fruit width and fresh pericarp thickness. Fresh pericarp thickness had a positive correlation with fruit width. Significantly positive correlations between $F_1s$ and mid-parents were observed in pericarp characters. Pericarp weight had a positive correlation with seed weight but had a negative correlation with the percent of seed weight/pericarp weight. In path coefficient analysis, it was found that fruit length, fruit width and pericarp thickness had direct effects on fresh and dry pericarp weight and that fruit length had the largest direct effect in $F_1s$.
