  • A field experiment of the leeway of person-in-water(man with wetsuit) was conducted during October 1997∼ April 1998. The experiment area was northeast side of Cho Do island in Pusan. The college students whose weight ranges 60∼87 kg, height 170∼178 cm were actually drifted for the experiment. The person-in-water wore 5 mm neoprene diving wetsuit to prevent heat loss of the body. The current near the target was measured using a colored vinyl bag. To compare the result a scuba diver equipped with scuba gear and with his BC(buoyancy compensator) fully inflated was drifted alongside. The average leeway speed of man with wetsuit and that of scuba diver were about 0.4 percent and 1.3% of the 10 m wind speed above the water respectively.

  • In the present study, the amount of slow drift motion damping of shuttle tanker in still water and various environments is measured through free decay model test. Although the estimation of slow drift damping is essential in analysing slow drift motion of moored FPSO or DP controlled shuttle tanker, it is difficult to predict damping accurately by theoretical analysis. The estimation of drift damping depends on model test mostly. Through the model test, the amount of slow drift damping is measured and the effects of environments and thruster action on drift damping are investigated. The measured damping characteristics are expected to be used in the analysis on slow drift motion of moored vessel.

  • The movement of drifting ships on the sea is closely related to marine environmental forces such as waves, currents, winds, etc. To develop a prediction model for trajectories oi drifting ships, an experiment on the movement of drifting ships was carried out in the Southeastern Sea of Korea. Five types of ships including a lire raft and tour ships with G/T 10tons, G/T 2o tons, G/T 50 tons, and G/T 80 tons, were considered in the experiment. The G/T 50 ton class ship was used as a base ship for obtaining the currents, winds and heading angles of ship following the trajectory. The trajectory of each ship was measured by DGPS(Differential Global Positioning System) and collected using APRS(Automatic Position Reporting System) installed on the base ship. The error range in position fix of DGPS are approximately ±1 m. The drift speed of ship in the experiment was between 3% to 5% of wind speed and drift direction of ship was deflected by ±90° from wind direction. Also, the heading of drifting ship was normal to wind direction.

  • This study investigates the drift characteristics of the Yellow Sea using a finite element model. A tidal model of the Yellow Sea was constructed, and its accuracy was verified by comparing the calculated tide levels and tidal current results with observed data. Six points with distinct tidal characteristics were selected across different areas of the Yellow Sea, and the drift paths due to tidal currents were analyzed. Additionally, the drift paths under the influence of increasing wind, in combination with tidal currents, were examined. At the point where a north-south reciprocating current occurs, the particle movement distance increases when a southwesterly wind blows, compared to the influence of the currents alone. On the other hand, at the point characterized by a counterclockwise elliptical current, the drift distance either increases or decreases depending on the location. The relationship between wind and water depth was analyzed, revealing that the shallower the water depth, the greater the wind's influence, leading to increased particle movement.

  • We examined the temporal characteristics of the oceanic eddy diffusion at 5 coastal regions of Korea by measuring the separation distances of multiple drifters released simultaneously at the same by the GPS and Decca transponder system. The observed variance of separation distance, for the time scales from minutes to hours, is proportional to t/SUP m/ with scaling exponent m between 1.2 and 2.0. The observed Lagrangian trajectories of drifters show fractal characteristics instead of random walk or Brown motion. As an effort toward a development of a realistic model of the oceanic eddy diffusion, we simulated the Lagrangian trajectories of drifters by fractional Brown motion (FBM) model. The observed variances of drifter separations can be generated by the FBM process provided the Hurst exponent is the same as the observed one. We further showed that the observed power law in the variance of drifter separations cannot be simulated with an ordinary Brown motion or random walk process.

  • To understand the dynamics of a drifting object, an analysis based on fluid dynamics theory is presented. A simplified analysis shows a consistency with the linear formula currently used for search and rescue mission. Also an experiment using miniatured human models has been conducted to study the drift characteristics of Person-in-Water. The tests were carried out at the water channel facility and the models were tested in different positions and styles. The measured drag coefficients for human body ranged over 0.4-1.2.

  • To provide reliable data for drift prediction models, field experiments were carried out in the coastal region off Busan port. Four different size of vessels(10, 30, 50, 90G/T ton) were deployed for the experiment. Among them G/T 50ton class vessel was equipped with instruments measuring the currents, winds, headings and trajectory data. In the rest of vessels only the position data were recorded for the purpose of target divergence study. The trajectories of each vessel were measured by DGPS(Differential Global Positioning System) and collected by APRS(Automatic Position Reporting System). The experiment was done in wind of 2~10m/s and current of 0.5~1.5m/s. The leeway was derived by subtracting surface current velocity from target drifting velocity. The leeway rate of G/T 50ton vessel was found to be about 3.6% and the computed leeway speed equation was $U_L$=0.042 W - 0.034. The processed leeway angle data were deflected by $-30^{\circ}$~$40^{\circ}$ from the direction of ship drift.

  • A GEO satellite launched by Arian 5 ECA launcher will be located in a transfer orbit where it requires several Apogee burn maneuvers to reach the target orbit. To obtain the required performance of Apogee burn maneuvers, a calibration of gyro drift error needs to be performed before each maneuver. In this paper, a unique gyro calibration scheme which is applied to COMS is described and the calibration error budget analysis is performed.
