The movement of drifting ships on the sea is closely related to marine environmental forces such as waves, currents, winds, etc. To develop a prediction model for trajectories oi drifting ships, an experiment on the movement of drifting ships was carried out in the Southeastern Sea of Korea. Five types of ships including a lire raft and tour ships with G/T 10tons, G/T 2o tons, G/T 50 tons, and G/T 80 tons, were considered in the experiment. The G/T 50 ton class ship was used as a base ship for obtaining the currents, winds and heading angles of ship following the trajectory. The trajectory of each ship was measured by DGPS(Differential Global Positioning System) and collected using APRS(Automatic Position Reporting System) installed on the base ship. The error range in position fix of DGPS are approximately ±1 m. The drift speed of ship in the experiment was between 3% to 5% of wind speed and drift direction of ship was deflected by ±90° from wind direction. Also, the heading of drifting ship was normal to wind direction.

For the Purpose of the measurement of drifting condition of the anchovy drift gill net, some experiments were carried out in M. S Seong-Yang at the near sea of Kampo harbor in Korean east sea from August to October 1994, by using three set of GPS equipped with her net. The main results obtained are as follows : 1) In fixed position by GPS at Taebyon, the radius of 95% probability and shifted distance from standard position were respectively 79.8m, 21.0m. 2) The mean values of PDOP and HDOP of GPS at Taebyon were respectively 3.5, 1.9 and the stability of the position by GPS at Taebyon was found to be very high. 3) In the fishing ground of the position from Lat. $35^{\circ}$ 41.5'N to $Lat^{\circ}$. 43.5', from Long. $129^{\circ}$ 32.0'E to Long. $129^{\circ}$ 32.5'E, the direction of the whole stretched drift gill net was $190^{\circ}$ and the direction of the whole casted net was $200^{\circ}$ when casting the net was finished. When whole net was found to be drifting into the direction of $170^{\circ}\;to\;180^{\circ}$, and the mean drifting speed of that was 0.82kt. 4) In the fishing ground of the position from Lat. $35^{\circ}$ 44.0'N to Lat. $35^{\circ}$ 45.2'N, from Long. $129^{\circ}$ 30.1'E to Long. $129^{\circ}$ 31.2'E, the direction of the whole stretched net was 20$^{\circ}$ and the direction of the whole stretched net was $20^{\circ}$ when casting the net was finished. When hauling the net, the direction of the spreaded net appeared from the North into the South and the whole net was found to be drifting into the direction of $210^{\circ}\;to\;220^{\circ}$, and the mean drifting speed of that was 0.75kt. 5) In the fishing ground of the positioning from Lat. $35^{\circ}$ 44.9'N to Lat. $35^{\circ}$ 46.0'N, Long. $129^{\circ}$ 33.0'E to Long. $129^{\circ}$ 34.0'E, the direction to the whole stretched net was $35^{\circ}$ and the direction of the whole casted net was $50^{\circ}$ when casting the net was finished. When hauling the net, the direction of the spreaded net appeared into the South from the East and the whole net was found to be drifting into the direction of $330^{\circ}\;to\;40^{\circ}$, and the mean drifting speed of the was 0.63kt.

Wave drift forces which are small in magnitudes compared to the first order wave exciting forces can cause very large motion of a vessel in waves. In this paper a theoretical and experimental analysis is made of the mean and slowly varying wave dirft forces on the semi-submersible platform. Theoretical calculations are performed by using near field method with three dimensional diffraction theory and model tests are carried out in regular and irregular waves with a 1/60 semi model. Test results are compared with theoretical calculations and the mooring spring effects in the test are discussed.

When a disabled ship is being towed in a seaway, the resistance increase of the towed ship caused by both the external conditions such as wave and wind and the hull conditions such as drifting angle, should be accurately predicted. Most of the disabled ships cannot be towed in the front direction of hull, but they are usually towed in drifted direction with some drifting angle. In this sense, the resistance increase caused by the drifting angle is not an element to be ignored. In this paper, various methods for prediction of the resistance increase caused by the drifting angle are studied. In addition, new prediction methods such as front-lateral projected ratio method and empirical formula method by multiple regression analysis have been derived. The front-lateral projected area ratio method has been applied to a computer program for prediction of the towing condition, and this method has been approved to be a useful method in practical situations.

In general, station relocation for a geostationary orbit satellite is formulated as a request for moving the spacecraft from its present longitude to the target longitude within a given time interval. The station relocation maneuver is composed of drift orbit insertion maneuver and target orbit insertion maneuver. During station relocation, the satellite orbit is continually influenced by the non-spherical geo-potential. When we plan a maneuver, if we do not consider the influence, the satellite may not be relocate to desired longitude successfully. To solve this problem, we applied the linearised orbit transfer equation to acquire maneuver time and delta-V. Nonlinear simulation for the station relocation of multiple satellites is performed in order to verify the distance between two satellites.

Recently, the size of container ships has been progressively increasing, and much attention is required for safe navigation in shallow areas such as coastal waters and ports due to increases in draft. It is necessary to understand the characteristics of ship motion not only in still waters but also with waves. Especially in shallow regions, squat due to the vertical movement of the ship can be an important evaluation factor for the safe navigation, and wave drift force acting in the horizontal direction can have a great influence on the maneuverability of a ship. In this study, a numerical simulation using computational fluid dynamics has been performed for the wave exciting force acting in the vertical direction and the wave drift force acting in the horizontal direction for a very large container vessel sailing in shallow zone. As a result, it was found that total resistance in still waters greatly increased in shallow water. Wave drift force was shown to decrease given longer wavelengths regardless of water depth. It was observed that the wave exciting force in shallow water was considerably larger than at other water depths. As wave height against the central part of the ship lowered, the aft side rose.
The daytime and nighttime sea surface temperature (SST) differences and their seasonal variabilities in the East Sea were studied using Argos drifters data during 1996~1999. The SST differences for 1,438 data set were derived from 30 Argos drifters related to the NOAA satellite-based location and data collection system. The horizontal variation of SST differences in summer in the East Sea were higher than those in winter. The relationship between the SST differences and the half day moving distances of Argos drifters was studied. Monthly SST difference in the northern and southern part of 38$^{\circ}$N in the East Sea was considered. The SST differences derived from NOAA-14 satellite were compared with those from Argos drifter between daytime and nighttime in the turbulent eddy off Wonsan coast of Korea.
The temporal and spatial distribution of the coastal cold waters which was formed due to winter colling in the South Sea of Korea was analyzed by IR images from satellite and in situ data from shipboard observations. The coastal waters are known to be consisted of the Yellow Sea Coastal Waters(YSCW) and the South Korean Coastal Waters(SKCW). The former is driven around the Chuja-do and drifted into the Cheju Strait by residual currents, while the latter expands toward offsea by southward wind forcing. The expansion patterns of the SKCW were observed as sinking expansion or drifting expansion such that both were strongly dependent on the surface heat flux conditions. Under the condition of positive heat flux(warmer sea surface) or when the sea surface heat is lost to the atmosphere, the surface water started sinking and eventually expanded toward the open sea causing the cooling of the water column. For the negative heat flux the surface water was just drifted horizontally and expanded seaward and in this case only the surface layer of water was cooled.
