Threshold Current Reduction of GaAs/AlGaAs Quantum Cascade Laser due to the Deep Mesa Structure (GaAs/AlGaAs Quantum Cascade Laser에서 Deep Mesa 구조에 의한 문턱전류 감소)

  • GaAs/AlGaAs based quantum cascade lasers were fabricated with two different types of i) the shallow mesa type which was etched up to above active region and ii) the deep mesa type which was etched through active region. While the threshold current density of shallow mesa type was $26-32\;kA/cm^2$, the one of deep mesa type was reduced drastically up to $13\;kA/cm^2$. Such lowered threshold current density at deep mesa type attributed to the reduction of current loss to the lateral directions.

Geomorphological Processes of Jaein Waterfall and Dissection Valley in Hantangang Lava Plateau, Central Korea (한탄강 용암대지의 재인폭포와 개석곡의 지형 형성)

  • This study aims to analyze geomorphologically Jaein Falls in Hantangang Lava Plateau for the landform structure, landform classification, falls dissection and recession. The height and recession length of the Falls are approximately 18m and 340m. after dissection valley arrive at area of the Jijangbong Volcanic Rock Complex of Mesozoic era, the fall will disappear. The structure of the dissection valley shows totally well vertical columnar joint near falls and plunge pool, colluvial talus deposits toward lower reach by the freezing-thawing and wet-dry activities, and alluvial cone and delta in estuary to Hantangang River. The Falls' age date and recession rate in the valley maybe relate to the age of the lava plateau. The estimated recession rate of the fall should be 8.75m/ka to 2.3m/ka, depending on the age 500ka to 40ka in lava plateau.

A Study on the Information of Landforms in the vicinity of the Hantan River (한탄강(漢灘江) 일대(一帶)의 지표기복(地表起伏)에 관한 정보(情報))

  • The purpose of this study is to clarified the geology and geomorphic characteristics of the Hantan River Basin. In this area, some kind of landforms are developed such as pre-land forms, lava plateau, and present landforms etc. Some river terraces are peculiar features in the area. Some conclusions are as follows : The vicinity of the Hantan River is lava plateau formed from the volcanic activity. Some steptoes are located in the lava plateau. Baekeuiri formation means the river bed boulder beneath the lava formation. The development of drainage patterns are unstable and the bifurcation ratio, the ratio of mean length of the river are lower than the other rivers. The relative height of the terraces is about $5{\sim}25m$ and the terraces are alluvial terraces. In the Jiktang Fall area, bedrock is granite and basalt plateau covered the bedrock. In that point, the old erosion surface is relatively steeper than the horizontal-basalt plateau. Vertical columnar joints are developed and weathering materials creep on the valley wall. The cross section of the landform of the Kosukjung vicinities are somewhat different from the landforms of Jiktang Fall. The bedrock near the Kosukjung is granite that is the same with the Jiktang Fall. But the cross section shows a asymmetrical curve from each side.
