  • To prevent the lowering of structural capability due to freezing and thawing in cold winter, numerous researches on frost heaving have been performed. As the result, the freezing index contour map of the Korea peninsula has been made for the design of the anti-freezing layer of pavements. However, the validity of the anti-freezing layer needs to be evaluated because systematic investigations on the variation of freezing depth with the thickness and material types of pavement layers and the configuration of the ground have been rarely performed. The freezing index of the Korea Highway Corporation test road site was calculated and the freezing depths of the concrete and asphalt pavements of the test road were investigated using the ambient and pavement temperature and water content. In addition, the investigated freezing depths were compared to the values estimated by existing freezing depth models. This is the preliminary study on the freezing-related data measured at the test road. The results with higher reliability will be produced by the long-term accumulation of the data and the analysis on it.

  • Adapting the maintenance criteria of Seoul City pavement is not applicable for borough pavement due to differences between the pavement of Seoul city and the borough, such as priority of maintenance, traffic volume, thickness of pavement, and pavement deterioration rate by distresses. To develop an efficient and reasonable evaluation method of the Seocho borough pavement condition within a limited budget, this study suggested the borough pavement condition evaluation model based on the PMS (Pavement Management System) of Seoul Metropolitan SPI (Seoul Pavement Index). The SPI was modified to predict the remaining life and determine the proper maintenance method for the pavement in Seocho borough. This was suggested to reflect the rate of the designed performance life and field performance life of pavement as well as the pavement condition at the stage of the completion of construction. Primary variables, such as crack, rutting and IRI in the final model affect the overall performance life due to their even composition. Therefore, the suggested model considering the lowered criteria, design performance factor, and construction factor can be used for the more efficient maintenance of Seocho borough pavement.

  • The results of a recent case study for material characterizations and structural evaluation to design asphalt overlay thickness of William P Hobby airport in Houston, Texas are presented herein. The existing runway 12R-30L of Hobby airport consisted of thick asphalt overlay over Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) and the localized surface shoving as evident in the closure of surface groove has been observed recently. Using the field cored asphalt concrete mixtures, measurements of percent air voids, asphalt content and aggregate gradation were conducted to find out the causations of surface shoving and groove closure. The FAA layered elastic program, LEDFAA was utilized to evaluate pavement structural conditions for new asphalt overlay. Two different composition assumptions for existing pavement were made to evaluate the pavement as followings: 1) APC, Asphalt Concrete Overlay over PCC pavement and 2) AC, Asphalt Concrete pavement. Based on laboratory testing results, a ratio of percent passing #200 to asphalt content ranged 1.1 to 2.2, which is considered a high ratio and a tendency of tender mix design was observed. Thus, the localized surface shoving and groove closure of the runway 12R-30L could be attributed to the use of excessive fine contents and tender mix design. Based on the structural evaluation results, it was ascertained that the analysis assuming the pavement structure as AC pavement gives more realistic structural life when the asphalt overlay is thicker enough compared to PCC layer because the existing PCC pavement under asphalt overlay acts more like a high quality base material.

  • The compaction equipment and the Marshall stability head are the two important testing equipment for the Marshall test. The compaction equipment is closely related to the air void, VMA and compactability of the mixtures, and the stability head is related to the Marshall stability and the flow, therefore the size and the shape of the equipment is essential for finding the accurate optimum asphalt content for the asphalt mix design. However, the size and the shape of the equipment currently used and the condition of the installation of compaction pedestal in this country are different from each agency and manufacturer. The national inspection of the Marshall equipment is necessary because the difference can affect the test results and also the performance of the asphalt pavement.

  • The excellent load transfer at transverse joints ensures the high performance of jointed plane concrete pavements(JPCP). Load transfer efficiency(LTE) is affected by dowel-bars, aggregate interlock and types of underlying layers, and these factors have to be modelled adequately for a reasonable analysis of JPCP. Generally, the joint stiffness has been represented by a spring model for the shear transfer by aggregate interlock or dowels. However dowel-bars, aggregate interlock and types of underlying layers have not been considered together in the design of joints. In this study, the joint stiffness that considered those factors was presented by comparing LTE obtained using FWD(Falling Weight Deflectometer) with theoretical results obtained using the finite element analysis. In addition, the effects of temperature and concrete age, on the joint stiffness were investigated.

  • Recently, the new pavement design method considering Korean environment and the specification for improving performance of pavement are being developed in Korea. The Jointed Concrete Pavement Program Applying Load Discretization Algorithm (called HEART-JCP) is one of the results of Korea Pavement Research Project in Korea. HEART-JCP program is developed to analyze various loading condition using the load discretization algorithm without mesh refinement. In addition, it can be modified easily into multi-purpose concrete pavement nidyses program because of the modularized structure characteristic of HEART-JCP. The program consists of basic program part and load discretization part. In basic program part, the displacement and stress are computed in the concrete slab, sub-layer, and dowel bar, which are modeled with plate/shell element, spring element and beam element. In load discretization program part, load discretization algorithm that was used for the continuum solid element is modified to analyze the model with plate and shell element. The program can analyze the distributed load, concentrated load, thermal load and body load using load discretization algorithm. From the result of verification and sensitivity study, it was known that the loading position, the magnitude of load, and the thickness of slab were the major factors of concrete pavement behavior as expected. Since the result of the model developed is similar to the results of Westergaard solution and ILLISLAB, the program can be used to estimate the behavior of jointed concrete pavement reasonably.

  • Pipe installation following excavation of pavement and underlying-soils induces settlements, cracks and bad roughness near utility cut. This study is to use PMT and LDWT in order to evaluate stiffness and/or degree of compaction of sublayers and backfill in utility cut section because no specially designed efforts for evaluating stiffness condition of the substructures below new pavement after pipe installation are offered at this time. From test results of PMT, comparable stiffness and/or degree of compaction in recompaction process is not obtained comparing to that of the existing sublayers before excavation. Thickness of the new surface layer after pipe installation must be designed thicker than that of the existing surface layer. It is verified that LDWT comparing to PMT is effective only to get stiffness and/or degree of compaction within limited depth from surface of materials, but it is not useful to evaluate stiffness of substructures in full depth in case of utility cut.

  • Flexible pavement responses to vehicular loading, such as critical stresses and strains, in each pavement layer, could be predicted by the multilayered elastic analysis. However, multilayered elastic theory suffers from major drawbacks including spatial dimension of a numerical model, material properties considered in the analysis, boundary conditions, and ill-presentation of tire-pavement contact shape and stresses. To overcome these shortcomings, three-dimensional finite element (3D FE) models are developed and numerical analyses are conducted to calculate pavement responses to moving load in this study. This paper introduces a methodology for an effective 3D FE to simulate flexible pavement structure. It also discusses the mesh development and boundary condition analysis. Sensitivity analyses of flexible pavement response to loading are conducted. The infinite boundary conditions and time-dependent history of calculated pavement responses are considered in the analysis. This study found that the outcome of 3D FE implicit dynamic analysis of flexible pavement that utilizes appropriate boundary conditions, continuous moving load, viscoelastic hot-mix asphalt model is comparable to field measurements.

  • Korea is known to have seasonal frost during winter and the effect of low temperatures and water may cause a weakening of pavements. For that reason, frost protection layers have been constructed in pavements to avoid damage caused by frost action. The practies established in USA and Japan have been adopted as anti-frost design methods in Korea. However, the characteristics of Korean soils are different. Additionally, there is no formulation of a reasonable equation for frost penetration depth and the criterion to identify potentially frost-susceptible soils in present pavement design manuals in Korea. Therefore, adequate pavement design procedures in seasonal frost areas, as well as construction and maintenance practices are required. In this paper, frost penetration depths along national roads in Korea were measured and analyzed over several years. The frost penetration depth was analyzed with respect to the provinces of Korea and sunny/ shaded areas. Additionally, measurement results were compared to the formula of the US Army Corps of Engineers and Ifukube in Japan.
