  • This study was conducted to investigate the community structure of arthropods, including various insect pests and their natural enemies, in walnut orchards. Furthermore, we tried to compare the species richness and community structure of arthropods by three different sampling methods, including beating, funnel trap, and pitfall trap. Arthropods were surveyed in three walnut orchards located at Gimcheon, Buyeo, and Hwaseong in South Korea from May to September, 2016. A total of 408 arthropod species were identified from 4,372 individuals, and 63 species were collected in all study sites. The species richness was the highest in funnel trap, while the abundance was the highest in pitfall trap. The species composition of the insects collected by the beating method was more similar to that of the funnel trap than the pitfall trap. Although the distributions of the economically important pests were different according to the study sites, six species, including Dichocrocis punctiferalis, Pseudaulacaspis pentagona, Gastrolina depressa, Lycorma delicatula, Metcalfa pruinosa, and Pochazia shantungensis, are the potentially important pests in walnut orchards. We also found a variety of predators and parasitoids, which will be important for walnut pest management.

  • The ground beetles or carabids are essentially predaceous feeding on a wide variety of insects including forest pests, slugs and land snails containing those injurious to livestock or veterinary, thus many are predominantly beneficial and serve as natural enemies. In the present investigation, some morphometric multivariate analysis were done for 9 different populations in 5 subspecies of D. (C.) jankowskii, which are one of the most common ground beetles in Korea As the results, when the comparison was conducted between intraspecific groups regardless of subspecies in external morphological characters, the average group membership revealed 97.46% correct assignment For intersubspecific comparisons alone 96.3% were correctly classified. Between the groups of ssp. jankowskii an average of 100% individuals were classified in their known group. Thus the predict group membership was highly significant(P<0.001), exceeding so-called 'the 75% rule'. Whereas, the average group membership using the male genitalic characters represented less than the 75% assignment, except only in ssp. quelpartianus (85.6%). The population from Is. Chindo were described here as a new subspecies for qualitative as well as the resultant quantitative differences. Therefore, a total of 7 subspecies are represented in Korea. Among them, the nominate subspecies, ssp. jankowskii(sensu lato), revealed distinct intrasubspecific differences between different geographic populations. These differences can be as notable as intersubspecific variation which need substantial revision of the previous intuitional concepts on the infraspecific level.

  • These studies were conducted to investigate the effect of temperature on the development and seasonal occurrence of Chrysopa pallens Ramber, a predator of aphids. Mean developmental periods of C. pallens from egg to adult emergence at four different temperatures of 17, 22, 27, and $30^{\circ}C$ were 39.5, 32.0,25.0, and 19.8 days, respectively. The longevities of adult females of C. pallens at the four temperatures were 84.7, 79.6, 77.7, and 69.8 days, respectively, whereas the total numbers of eggs laid by a female were 973, 1085, 1637, and 1735, respectively. Egg hatchability, rate of adult emergence, and sex ratio of C. pallets were slighty higher with increased temperature with 84.1~95.9%, 67.6~86.3%, and 1:1. Under three humidity conditions of 35, 55 and 75% RH, the mean developmental periods of C. pallets from egg to adult emergence at the $27^{\circ}C$ were 26, 24, and 22.9 days, respectively, while the number of eggs laid by a female were 1042.8, 1526.5, and 1640.0, respectively. Oviposition of C. pallets usually began 5~6 days after the emergence at $27^{\circ}C$. Then females laid ca. 30~40 eggs a day, reaching a peak of 80~90 eggs a day about 22~28 days after the emergence. Population fluctuation of M. persicae and A. gossypii showed the highest peak in late May through the mid-June, and the second peak appeared in early~mid-September. The adult occurrence of C. pallens by the light trap record started from mid-May, and show two peaks, in mid-late July and mid-late September in Chonbuk area.

  • The ecological characteristics of the specialist insect predator, Oligota kashmirica benefica, were investigated for developing artificial rearing method with special interest on the oviposition behavior, the pattern of adult emergence and temperature in storage, and its effect on the density of the citrus red mite, Panonychus citri. Female beetle oviposited eggs mainly, $95\%$ of the eggs, on the bottom of leaves of the yuzu tree, and $91.3\%$ of them were covered with ecdysis skin of the red mites or the feces of themselves. The rate of adult emergence of the beetle rose up to $86.7\%$ when the horticultural media was provided for pupation from $60\%$ when it pupated in upland soil. Most larvae, $88\%$ of them, were found from the surface to the depth of 2 cm in the horticultural media. The optimum temperature for the storage of the adult beetle was found to be $12^{\circ}C$, at this temperature the 96.7, 73.3 and $70.0\%$ of the beetle survived for 10, 20, and 30 days, respectively. The control effect of the citrus red mite was appeared highest by releasing the beetle at the rate of one beetle against 150 mites.

  • This study was performed to investigate the immature development period, fecundity, emergence rate and sex ratio of Sclerodermus harmandi against different host insects, Monochamus alternatus, M. saltuarius and Psacothea hilaris. Full grown larvae and pupae of host insects were provided with foods. The mean larval period of S. harmandi female was $29.2{\pm}0.93\;and\;25.1{\pm}0.47$ days in larvae and pupae of M. alternatus, $27.1{\pm}0.41\;and\;26.0{\pm}0.69$ days in M. saltuarius, and $26.3{\pm}0.38\;and\;31.2{\pm}0.24$ days in P. hilaris, respectively. S. hilaris adults were emerged at $12.9{\pm}0.2$ days in female and $11.9{\pm}0.2$ days in male after pupation when hosted M. alternatus pupa. Development period in male showed shorter one day than in female. Success rate of oviposition against different hosts was higher as 98.6 and 97.5% on full grown larva and pupa of M saltuarius. Emergence rate was higher as 90.1 and 87.3% on M. saltuarius larvae and pupae. Sex ratio of emerged S. harmandi adults was approximately 10:1 (Female : Male), females showed higher emergence rate than males. The period until first oviposition after emergence in S. harmandi female was the shortest in $4.6{\pm}0.1$ days on M. saltuarius pupa. When three females of S. harmandi were inoculated on M. saltuarius larva, the number of laid eggs was the highest $62.7{\pm}2.5$ per female.

  • The major species of fungus gnats which caused the severe damage in shiitake farm were identified as a Bradysia difformis, B. alpicola, and Camtomyia cortocalis on oak log beds cultivation. The B. difformis occurred early in the middle of March while B. alpicola and C. cortocalis appeared since the beginning of May. The occurrence rate for adults of B. difformis showed highly at the end of July (11.9~1,774.2 in dong-myeon and 0.4~2,583.3 in pungse-myeon) in 2012 and mid-June (10.7~4,650 in dong-myeon and 36.8~4740 in pungse-myeon) in 2013. The counting numbers on the traps for B. alpicola reached highest peak in the middle of June (2.1~63.2 in dong-myeon and 1.0~21.7 in pungse-myeon) and the end of May (0.8~163.7 in dong-myeon and 0.5~280.5 in pungse-myeon) in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The number of C. cortocalis showed high record in the middle of May in 2012 (0.6~4.7) and in the middle of June (2.1~17.3) in 2013 in dong-myeon whereas showed the peaks in the middle of May (0.6~4.7) in 2012 and in the late of May (1.3~17.6) in 2013 in pungse-myeon. The fruiting bodies of shiitake mushroom by fungus gnats were severely damaged from mid-June to late-July and the damage rate were 0.625.5% (2012) and 0.7~30.5% (2013) in dong-myeon and 1.5%~21.6% (2012) and 1.9~36.8%(2012) in pungse-myeon. To investigate the control effect for fungus gnats by Hypoaspis aculeifer, H. aculeifer (30 mixutre of nymph and adult per $m^2$) were treated to oak log beds shiitake cultivation for six times (May 2 and 28, June 25, July 10 and 25 and August 28). The occurrence rate of adults and damage rate of fruiting bodies of 3 major species reduced 79.3% (adult numbers) and 74.8% (fruiting bodies) in dong-myeon and 64.1% (adult numbers) and 65.5% (fruiting bodies) in pungse-myeon, respectively, compared to non-treatment. Accordingly, H. aculeifer effectively controlled the fungus gnats on shiitake mushroom and can be used as good control agent.
