  • Thumbnail, the small sized graphic file such as JPEG or GIF, serves to help the users to be recognized as a rapidly helps to make it easier recognize while browsing the large sized graphic file. Gallery application, which is installed in a later version of the 4.4.x(Kitkat) Android smartphone records the generated time of graphic file in thumbnail metadata. Thumbnail can be used to draw up the timeline of user action about user's action such as creation, modification, deletion with original graphic file analysis. Also, take advantage of the features thumbnails are stored sequentially in a single thumbcache file, even if the thumbcache is deleted, we can restore the thumbnails. This paper illustrates the feature of thumbnail created by Android OS basic gallery app and methods for utilization in digital forensics.

  • There was a large scale of DDoS(Distributed Denial of Service) attacks mostly targeted at Korean government web sites and cooperations's on March 4, 2010(3.4 DDoS attack) after 7.7 DDoS on July 7, 2009. In these days, anyone can create zombie PCs to attack someone's website with malware development toolkits and farther more improve their knowledge of hacking skills as well as toolkits because it has become easier to obtain these toolkits on line, For that trend, it has been difficult for computer security specialists to counteract DDoS attacks. In this paper, we will introduce an essential control list to prevent malware infection with live forensics techniques after analysis of monitoring network systems and PCs. Hopefully our suggestion of how to coordinate a security monitoring system in this paper will give a good guideline for cooperations who try to build their new systems or to secure their existing systems.

  • Lately, intrusive incidents (including system hacking, viruses, worms, homepage alterations, and data leaks) have not involved the distribution of an virus or worm, but have been designed to acquire private information or trade secrets. Because an attacker uses advanced intelligence and attack techniques that conceal and alter data in a computer, the collector cannot trace the digital evidence of the attack. In an initial incident response first responser deals with the suspect or crime scene data that needs investigative leads quickly, in accordance with forensic process methodology that provides the identification of digital evidence in a systematic approach. In order to an effective initial response to first responders, this paper analyzes the collection data such as user usage profiles, chronology timeline, and internet data according to CFFPM(computer forensics field triage process model), proceeds to design, and implements a collection application to deploy the client/server architecture on the Windows based computer.

  • Recently, the use of digital audio and video as proof in criminal and all kinds of litigation is increasing, and scientific investigation using digital forensic technique is developing. With the development of computing and file editing technologies, anyone can simply manipulate video files, and the number of cases of manipulating digital data is increasing. As a result, the integrity of the evidence and the reliability of the evidence Is required. In this paper, we propose a technique for extracting the Electrical Network Frequency (ENF) through a grid of power grids according to the geographical environment for power supply, and then performing signal processing for peak detection using QIFFT. Through the detection algorithm using the standard deviation, it was confirmed that the video file was falsified with 73% accuracy and the forgery point was found.

  • Thanks to the development of diverse audio editing Technology, audio file can be easily revised. As a result, diverse social problems like forgery may be caused. Digital forensic technology is actively studied to solve these problems. In this paper, a hand-held device identification method, an area of digital forensic technology is proposed. It uses the noise features of devices caused by the design and the integrated circuit of each device but cannot be identified by the audience. Wiener filter is used to get the noise sounds of devices and their acoustic features are extracted via MIRtoolbox and then they are trained by multi-layer neural network. To evaluate the proposed method, we use 5-fold cross-validation for the recorded data collected from 6 mobile devices. The experiments show the performance 99.9%. We also perform some experiments to observe the noise features of mobile devices are still useful after the data are uploaded to UCC. The experiments show the performance of 99.8% for UCC data.

  • With the rapid development of information and communication technology, mobile devices have become an essential tool in our lives. Mobile devices are used as important evidence in criminal proof, as they accumulate data simultaneously with PIM functions while working with users most of the time. The mobile forensics is a procedure for obtaining digital evidence from mobile devices and should be collected and analyzed in accordance with due process, just like other evidence, and the integrity of the evidence is essential because it has aspects that are easy to manipulate and delete. Also, the adoption of evidence relies on the judges' liberalism, which necessitates the presentation of generalized procedures. In this paper, a mobile forensics model is presented to ensure integrity through the generalization of procedures. It is expected that the proposed mobile forensics model will contribute to the formation of judges by ensuring the reliability and authenticity of evidence.

  • Recently leakages of confidential information and internal date have been steadily increasing by using booting technique on portable OS such as Windows PE stored in portable storage devices (USB or CD/DVD etc). This method allows to bypass security software such as USB security or media control solution installed in the target PC, to extract data or insert malicious code by mounting the PC's storage devices after booting up the portable OS. Also this booting method doesn't record a log file such as traces of removable storage devices. Thus it is difficult to identify whether the data are leaked and use trace-back technique. In this paper is to propose method to help facilitate the process of digital forensic investigation or audit of a company by collecting and analyzing BIOS firmware images that record data relating to BIOS settings in flash memory and finding traces of portable storage devices that can be regarded as abnormal events.

  • Computer technology and Internet advances enable easy massive file transfer by messenger, email, and web hard service users this means that a child pornography file owner who is illegally possessing itself can quickly transfer that to other users However there are currently no specific ways to prevent or block the distribution of child pornography between messenger, email, and web hard service users. in this paper, we propose a method to prevent the distribution of child pornography using the MD5, SHA-1 hash value stored in the 'police Child pornography Profiling system' and to identify the child pornography suspects using the subscriber information. the user extracts the hash value of the file before distributing the file, compared it with police system, and if it has the same value, blocks the transmission of the file and sends warning to the owner. the service provider sends the subscriber information to investigation agency child pornography owners can conduct a quick and accurate investigation.

  • Various video conferencing and collaboration applications have emerged due to the global epidemic of new viral infections. In addition to real-time video conferencing, video conferencing applications provide features such as chat and file sharing on various platforms. Because various personal information is stored through functions such as chatting, file and screen sharing, these video conferencing applications are the major target of analysis from a digital forensic investigation. In the case of applications that provide cross-platform, the form of stored data is different depending on the platform. Therefore, to utilize data of video conferencing application for forensic investigation, preliminary research on artifacts stored by platform is required. In this paper, we used the video conferencing applications GoToWebinar and GoToMeeting and analyzed the artifacts generated. As a result, we list the main data from a digital forensic investigation. We identify data stored for each platform provided by GoToWebinar and GoToMeeting and organize artifacts that can estimate user behavior. Also, we classify the data that can be acquired according to the role and environment within the video conference.

  • In tandem with the advancements in the digital era, the significance of digital data has escalated, necessitating an increased focus on digital forensics investigations. However, the process of collecting and analyzing digital evidence faces significant challenges, such as the unidentifiability of damaged files due to issues like media corruption and anti-forensic techniques. Moreover, the technological limitations of existing tools hinder the recovery of damaged files, posing difficulties in the evidence collection process. This paper aims to propose solutions for the recovery of corrupted MS Office files commonly used in digital data creation. To achieve this, we analyze the structure of MS Office files in the OOXML format and present a novel approach to overcome the limitations of current recovery tools. Through these efforts, we aim to contribute to enhancing the quality of evidence collection in the field of digital forensics by efficiently recovering and identifying damaged data.
