  • Morphological and population characteristics of the Cottus koreanus were investigated at Hoam stream from October 2015 and April 2016. This is the first record on C. koreanus not only from Hoam stream (the upstream region of Daejong stream, Gyeongsangbuk-do Gyeongju-si Yangbuk-myeon Hoam-ri) but also from the stream flowing into the Samcheogosip stream, in the southern part of East Sea, Korea. The distribution of C. koreanus ranged from Girim temple to Yongyeon waterfall, about 1.2 km, and the water surface were about $3,600m^2$. The population size was assumed to 1,656 individual number, 46 object per $100m^2$. The morphometric characteristics of C. koreanus in the Hoam stream and the Han river are very similar except that the population at Hoam stream shorter head length, ventral fin ray length, pectoral fin ray length and mouth width when compared with the population at Han river. Other than that, the two populations showed the same meristic characters. Frequency analysis of total length indicated that the group with 40~59 mm in total length was one year old, the 60~79 mm was two years old, and the group over 80 mm was three years old. The average number of eggs in the ovaries was estimated as 361 (239~468) per matured female. The number of matured eggs size in ovaries was $2.6{\pm}0.21$ (23.~3.1) mm and this species was large eggs type. Calculation of the length-weight relation of C. koreanus showed the value of constant a as 0.00001 and b as 3.01, and the Condition factor (K) was 1.26 an on average.

  • The population ecology (Ecological characteristics) of Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae were investigated at Geum River from March to November, 2013. This species inhabited midstream of the river where was mostly covered with cobble and sand. The depth of the habitat was 30~60 cm and velocity of stream was 2.27~4.88 cm/sec. The sex ratio of female to male was 1 : 0.86. They were sexually mature when they were over two years of age. The spawning period was from June to July with water temperatures from $25^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$. Sexually matured individuals appeared over the two year of age. Frequency analysis of total length indicated that the group with 55~70 mm in total length was one year old, the 71~90 mm was two years old, and the group over 91 mm was three years old. The average number of eggs in the ovaries was estimated as 2,219 per matured female. The number of matured eggs size in ovaries was 0.64~0.98 (mean: 0.85) mm. Calulation length-weight relation of S. chankaensis tsuchigae show the value of contant a as 0.0002 and b as 2.81, and condition factor (K) was 1.06 on average. The stomach contents were Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Crustaceae, Copepoda, Nematota, Actithocephala, and Ephemeroptera, Hemiptera, Diptera, and Trichoptera that belong to Aquatic insect, and dormant bud of Pectinatella that belongs to Phylactolaemata. The diet of S. chankaensis tsuchigae was omnivorous, mainly vegetable feed on attached algae (filament form), and mainly animality feeded on benthic invertebrates such as Chironomidae larvae.

  • Maturity and spawning of spinyhead sculpin, Dasycottus setiger were investigated using samples collected by the eastern sea danish seine and gillnet in the East Sea of Korea from January to December 2004. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stages, gonadosomatic index (GSI), egg diameter, fecundity, total length at 50% group maturity, and sex ratio. GSI began to increase in August, reached a maximum between September and November, and decreased in December. The spawning period was August to December, and the main spawning period was September to November. The fecundity ranged from 6,210 eggs at 22.3 cm (TL) to 15,898 eggs at 32.2 cm (TL). The relationship between total length (TL) and fecundity (F) was $F=25.475TL^{1.818}$ ($R^2=0.761$), and F increased with TL. The TL at 50% group maturity was estimated to be 23.4 cm. The sex ratio was 1 : 1.3 (female : male), indicating the male population was seem to be slightly predominant.

  • Gonadal development, reproductive cycle and embryonic development of the marbled rockfish, Sebastiscus marmoratus were investigated histologically. A total of 1,035 specimens were collected from the Cheju Island from July of 1992 to May of 1996. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) in female reached the maximum during October to March, thereafter, the values decreased from Norvember to April. GSI in male reached the maximum in September (before one to three months of the female's maximum), thereafter, the values rapidly decreased from October to December. The annual reproductive cycle can be divided into five stages in female and four stages in male: females, Growing(June to September), Mature(September to February), Ripe and copulation(October to March), Gestation and parturition(November to April), Degenerative and resting(December to May); in males, Growing(April to July), Mature(August to November), Ripe and copulation(September to December), and Degenerstive and resting(November to March). Size frequency distribution of eggs and larvae showed non-synchrony. Maternal larvae parturition occurred one or two time during November to April. Mean length of the larvae parturition was 3.5 mm. Mean number of eggs and maternal larvae for the 15 cm minimum class of female was 58,377, and fecundity increased with the increase of total length and body weight.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate spawning period characteristics and early life development of eight barbel loach, Lefua costata (Balitoridae) at the Jusucheon stream, Okgye-myeon, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, Korea between January and December in 2018. The spawning period was estimated to be from May to August, considering the change in the gonad-somatic index, the appearance of young fry, and frequency distribution in egg diameter. It was a multi-spawning type. The gender ratio was 1:0.79 with 1,117 females and 879 males collected. The egg size was 0.24-0.93 mm, with mature and immature eggs found during the spawning period. The size of mature eggs was 0.71±0.02 mm, and the average number of fecundity was 1,786±818 (n=31). Observation of the egg development showed that the fertilized eggs were the sticky, gray, segregated, and demersal type with 0.76±0.03 mm in diameter. The hatching of the embryos began at about 34 hours (hatching rate 50%) after fertilization underwater temperature of 25℃. The average length of the newly hatched pre-larvae was 2.7±0.11 mm. The average length of pre-larvae at 4 days after hatching was 4.5±0.16 mm, and the yolk sac was completely absorbed and entered the post-larvae stage. At 20 days after hatching, the average length of post-larvae was 11.5±0.67 mm, and their fin rays were formed before they transitioned to the juvenile stage. At 100 days after hatching, the average length reached 49.8±2.60 mm, and the appearance and the lateral sideband patterns were similar to those of the adult fish.

The river bed structure of this species' habitat was rich in pebbles and gravel. The water depth ranged from 12 to 85 cm with an average of 23 cm, which was shallow. The stream velocity was rapid at 1.03±0.34(0.72-1.47) m/sec. The ratio of females to males was 1:0.86. The age according to the total length-frequency distribution as of summer (June, July) indicated that the group with less than 50 mm (30.4-49 mm) in total length was one year old, the group with 50-69 mm was two years old, and the group over 70-92 mm was three years old. Both male and female fish sexually matured at 50 mm long and two years old in June and July. The spawning season was from July to August, and the water temperature was between 25.8℃ and 28.2℃ during the period. The prosperous spawning season was July. The matured eggs were yellowish and spherical with a mean diameter of 0.52±0.16 (0.33-0.77) mm, and the average number of eggs found in the ovaries of mature female fish was 2,593 (1,343-4,672). As for the food of M. yaluensis, only attached algae, which grow by attaching to stones and gravel of the stream rapids, were identified. The feeding habit of M. yaluensis was reported to be herbivorous, ingesting Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta and Bacillariophya. Also, the species belonging to Bacillariophya and Chlorophyta were abundant in Dugye Stream.
