  • Precast reinforced concrete bridge columns with hollow rectangular section were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial force to investigate its seismic performance. After all the precast column segments were erected, longitudinal reinforcement was inserted in the sheath prefabricated in the segments, which were then mortar grouted. Main variables of the test series were column aspect ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, amount of lateral reinforcement, and location of segment joints. The aspect ratios were 4.5 and 2.5, and the longitudinal steel ratios were 1.15% and 3.07%. The amount of lateral reinforcement were 95%, 55%, 50%, and 27% of the minimum amount for full ductility design requirements in the Korean Bridge Design Code. The locations of segment joints in plastic hinge region were 0.5 and 1.0 times of the section depth from the bottom column end. The test results of cracking and failure mode, axial-flexural strength, lateral load-displacement relationship, and displacement ductility are presented. Then, safety of the ductility demand based seismic design in the Korean Bridge Design Code is discussed. The column specimens showed larger ductility than expected, because buckling of longitudinal reinforcing bar was prevented due to confinement developed not only by transverse steel but also by sheath and infilling mortar.

  • In this study, we have constructed the acoustic microscope using quadrature technique and analyzed the relative variation of image intensity and the quality of image by reconstructing the amplitude and phase image for surface defects with tiny hight variation. In this experiment, we have constructed the scanning acoustic microscope using the focused transducer with 3㎒ center frequency and the quadrature detector. And we have fabricated aluminum samples with round defects whose depth is different and reconstructed the amplitude and phase images for the samples. One sample has round defects with 2㎜ diameter and 100㎛ depth and the other has round defects with 4㎜ diameter and 5㎜ depth. In the result of line scanning for the sample with 100㎛ round defects, it has been shown that the variation rate of amplitude image intensity is 7% and the variation rate of phase image intensity is 89%. The phase image has better contrast than amplitude image for the sample. In contrast to this, the amplitude image has better contrast than phase image for the sample with 5㎜ depth's defects. Accordingly there is big difference between amplitude image and phase image for depth variation of defects whose boundary is 1 wavelength. Consequently the acoustic microscope using quadrature detector can be evaluated efficiently more than using envelope detector, for detecting defects which have height variation less than 1 wavelength. And also the phase image and the amplitude image can be used for detecting defects of tiny height variation with complimentary relation.

  • Grouting has been practiced as a reliable technique to improve the mechanical properties of rock mass. But, the study of ground improvement by greeting is rare especially in jointed rock mass. In this study, joint compression test and direct shear test were performed on pure rock joint and cement milk grouted rock joint to examine the grouting effect on the property of rock joint. In the pure rock joint compression test, joint closure varied non-linearly with normal stress. But after cement milk grouting, the normal deformation characteristics of the joint was linear at the low normal stress level. As normal stress increased. deformation of the sample rapidly increased due to the stress concentration at the joint asperities. Peak shear strength of the grouted joint in low normal stress was higher than that of non-grouted joint due to the cohesion, decreased exponetially as the grout thickness increased. Thus after cement milk grouting, the failure envelope modified to a curve that has cohesion due to grout material hydration with decreased friction angle. Shear stiffness and peak dilation angle of the grouted joint decreased as the grout thickness increased. The peak shear strength from the direct shear test on grouted rock joint was represented by an empirical equation as a fuction of grout thickness and roughness mean amplitude.

  • In this paper, we have studied the OCT(Optical Coherence Tomography) system which has been advantages of high resolution, 2-D cross-sectional images, low cost and small size configuration. The characteristics of light source determine the resolution and coherence length. The light source has a commercial SLD with a central wavelength of 1,285 ill11, 35.3 nm(FWHM). The optical delay line is necessary to make equal with the optical path length to scattered light or reflected light from a sample. In order to make equal the optical path length, the stage that is attached to a reference mirror is controled by a step motor. And the interferometer is configured with the Michelson interferometer by using a single mode fiber, and the scanner can be focused on the sample by using a reference ann Also, the 2-dimension cross-sectional images were measured with scanning the transverse direction of the sample by using a step motor. After detecting the internal signal of lateral direction, a scanner is moved to obtain the cross-sectional image of 2-dimension by using step motor. A photodiode, which has high detection sensitivity and excellent noise characteristics has been used. The detected small signal has a noise and interference. After filtering and amplifying the signal, the output signal is demodulated the waveform And then, a cross-sectional image is seen through converting this signal into a digitalized signal by using an AID converter. The resolution of the sample is about 30${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, which corresponds to the theoretical resolution. Also, the cross-sectional images of onion cells were measured in real time scheme.

  • The shear behavior at the particle/surface interface such as rock joint can determine the mechanical behavior of whole structure. Therefore, a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms governing its behavior and accurately estimation of the interface strength is essential. In this paper, PFC, a numerical analysis program of discrete element method was used to investigate the effects of the surface roughness on interface strength. The surface roughness was characterized by smooth, intermediate, and rough surface, respectively. In order to investigate the effects of particle shape and crushing on particle/surface interface behavior, one ball, clump, and cluster models were created and their results were compared. The shape of particle was characterized by circle, triangle, square, and rectangle, respectively. The results showed that as the surface roughness increases, interface strength and friction angle increase and the void ratio increases. The one ball model with smooth surface shows lower interface strength and friction angle than the clump model with irregular surface. In addition, a cluster model has less interface strength and friction angle than the clump model. The failure envelope of the cluster model shows non-linear characteristic. From these findings, it is verified that the surface roughness and particle shape effect on the particle/surface interface shear behavior.

  • We studied the optical and structural properties of conventional and ion-beam-assisted-deposition (IBAD) Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ films which were evaporated by an electron beam gun. The vacuum-to-air spectral shift and the cross sectional SEM images of the Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ films were investigated. The results show that the IBAD Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ films have a higher packing density than the conventional Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ films. The average refractive index of IBAD Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ films was increased, while the extinction coefficient was decreased compared with the conventional films. As the oxygen flow was increased, the average refractive index and extinction coefficient of the conventional and IBAD films decreased. Both the conventional and IBAD Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ films showed inhomogeneity in refractive index, and the degree of inhomogeneity of the IBAD Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ films became larger as the ion current density was increased. All Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ films were found to be amorphous by x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and hence the crystal structure of Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ films was not changed by IBAD.

  • Unconfined compression test (UC) has been widely used to determine the undrained shear strength ($c_u$) of clay, because it is convenient and economical. However, UC can not represent the behaviour of in-situ stress condition and the strength obtained by the test is generally underestimated compared to that of triaxial compression, due to no confining pressure. Therefore, a simple and practical method to correct the ($c_u$) for sample disturbance and to be used in geotechnical practice is needed. This study is aimed at proposing the method to estimate in-situ undrained shear strength from UC with suction measurement. The proposed method is based on theoretical shear strength equation of perfect sample (Noorany & Seed, 1965), and effective overburden stress and analysis results ($A_f,\phi'$) of effective stress behaviour by UC are needed for the equation. The shear resistance angle ($\phi'$) can be simply estimated through the result that $K_f$-line slope of the UC is 1.6 times higher than that of triaxial compression test. The result of this study shows that the measured strength by this method is very similar to that of the undrained shear strength by triaxial compression test (CK$_0$UC).

  • In this study, shear strength characteristics of the Nak-Dong river sand in Taegu area are investigated by triaxial compression test, considering shear strain control velocity, relative density, and confining pressure. The results from Lade model and Modified Lade model are compared with the measured value in the laboratory test. The results by the change of shear strain control velocity, relative density, and confining pressure are as follows; 1) The stress limit, which can be Coulomb's law about the Nak-Dong river sand, have ranged 120~200 kpa at 0.08%/min and 120~150 kpa at 0.5%/min. These limits are smaller than that of the calcareous sand and the well-graded, quartz sand. 2) The parameters needed to Lade model and Modified Lade model are much affected by the strain control velocity and the relative density. Consequently, in the field, it is important to use parameters aptly after accurately understanding both the loading condition and subsoil condition. 3) Overall, the principal stress ratio obtained from constitutive model equations is not affected by the control velocity, but both the relative density and confining pressure affect the result of constitutive model equations. Consequently, the study on the various conditions about the relative density and confining pressure is needed to accurately predict the stress-strain behavior on the Nak-Dong river sand. 4) For the range of the used confining pressure in the study, the Lade model shows better agreements with the measured value than the Modified Lade model, comparing the measured value with the principal stress ratio at failure and the internal friction angle of failure envelope obtained from the Lade model and Modified Lade model.

  • The soil on the behavior of the nonlinear elastic work-hardening plasticity has a variety of stress paths due to the state of soil and the test conditions. The soil with a specific volume ${\upsilon}$ in principal stress space (${\sigma}_1$, ${\sigma}_2$, ${\sigma}_3$, and ${\upsilon}$v) displays the shape of an irregular hexagonal pyramid with an end cap. With variations of ${\upsilon}$ the size of the cap is changed but its shape remains unchanged and the movement of the cap is controlled by the increase or decrease of the plastic volumetric strain. By reflecting such a property of soil various cap models have been developed by researchers. In this thesis, a constitutive model of soil with a combination of the nonlinear elastic work-hardening plastic cap and the failure surfaces of Mohr-Coulomb (M-C cap model) has been developed. According to the the results of analyses using the work-hardening plastic cap model, the normally consolidated soil under shearing has experienced the work-hardening and plastic flow (movement of the cap). But in the shearing of the overconsolidated soil the elastic behavior is shown until the stress path has reached the failure surface and the cap does not move.

  • In this paper, minimum sampling rates and method of nonlinear characterization were suggested for low power, quasi-memoryless PAs. So far, the Nyquist rate of the input signal has been used for nonlinear PA modeling, and it is burdening Analog-to-digital converters for wideband signals. This paper shows that the input Nyquist rate sampling is not a necessary condition for successful modeling of quasi-memoryless PAs. Since this sampling requirement relives the bandwidth requirements for Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) for feedback paths in digital pre-distortion systems, relatively low-cost ADcs can be used to identify nonlinear PAs for wideband signal transmission, even at severe aliasing conditions. Simulation results show that a generic memoryless nonlinear RF power amplifier with AMAM and AMPM distortion can be successfully identified at any sampling rates. Measurement results show the modeling error variation is less than 0.8dB over any sampling rates.
