  • The pretreatment of used newspaper for the enzymatic digestion preprocess was performed on a percolation reactor and a batch reactor. The test condition of percolation process was $170^{circ}C$, 60min, 1 mL/min, and 400psi, that of batch was $40^{circ}C$, 3hr. and latm Reaction solutions used in pretreatment process were aqueous ammonia, sulfuric acid, water, and hydrogen-peroxide as an oxidizing agent. As a result, the effect of pretreatment was similar to batch and percolation process, but the yield of enzymatic hydrolysis was higher in batch than percolation. This batch pretreatment enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis rate and increased glucose yield from about 15 to 20%. The inhibition factors influenced the rate of enzymatic hydrolysis was investigated, and the ink contented newspaper was the major factor.

  • The objective of this paper was the development of boards made from waste newspapers. The boards were produced from particle ONP(old newspaper) to reduce energy consumption in the board production process. ONP boards bonded with polyurethan adhesives(PU) were produced on a laboratory scale, and their physical and mechanical properties were examined. The average density of the ONP was $0.48g/cm^3$, and the densities of the boards were $0.50-0.90g/cm^3$. Therefore, th compaction ratios of the boards were in the range of 1.04-1.88. The results obtained were as follows: 1) An increase in board density results in a corresponding improvement in bending properties. 2) An increase in board density results in increased thermal conductivity. 3) In this research, ONP board can be used only for interior applications. To gain exrerior applications, the dimensional stability properties(thickness swelling and water absorption) need to be improved.

  • Lignocellulosic wastes available in abundance can be excellent substrates for the production of cellulase. Different types of substrates and various pretreatments were used to improve the production of cellulase. The steam-exploded wood chip gave the highest activities of FPase (0.84 IU/mL) and CMCase (6.5 IU/mL) in the shake-flask culture. In 30 L bioreactor the steam-exploded wood chip and residue after saccharification gave the FPase activity (0.72 IU/mL) and the CMCase activity (6.3 IU/mL), respectively, similar those obtained in lactose.

  • Because the household garbage had high water contents, it is difficult to compost it without an additive. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate possibility of using the waste newspapers as a humidity conditioner for the household garbage composting. The maximum temperature was $66.0^{\circ}C$ in spring, $69.2^{\circ}C$ in summer, $60.9^{\circ}C$ in fall and $56.0^{\circ}C$ in winter for composting periods. The seasonal pH value reached around 8.5 after 1 week and then repeated fluctuation at the narrow range in spring and fall, while it was stabilized at the range of $8{\sim}9$ after increasing to 8.5 after 1 week in winter. The water content was reduced little in winter, while decreased significantly in the other seasons. The water content after 8 weeks was 22.2% in spring, 47.6% in summer, 25.5% in fall and 72.5% in winter. The mass was reduced rapidly during the first week of each season, but it did not show much decrease. The volume reduced after 8 weeks to 59%, 32%, 27%, and 34% in spring, summer, fall and winter respectively. Organic matter content decreased over the four seasons. Nitrogen contents were in the range of 0.7% to 2.2% during the four seasons. The contents of inorganic compounds based on dry matyter were in the range of $0.94{\sim}2.59%\;P_2O_5$, $1.23{\sim}1.87%\;CaO$, $0.37{\sim}0.46%\;MgO$, $0.55{\sim}1.98%\;K_2O$. Concentration of heavy metals(Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Zn, As) based on dry matter were less than the limiting value of the by-product compost.

  • This study was Performed to evaluate applicability of color flexible pavement concrete (CFPC) for motorway pavement. Color flexible pavement has been applied to non-motorway pavements, such as pedestrian and bicycle road. Two polymers were used to modify the binder and to strengthen the stiffness of pavement mixture. Waste paper was used to prevent the asphalt of gap-grade mixture from draining. Marshall properties, indirect tensile strength(ITS), tensile strength ratio(TSR) before and after freezing-and-thawing treatment and artificial aging, permanent deformation and fatigue life were measured. Color bituminous concrete mixtures used this study had nearly the same quality in mechanical properties when compared with conventional asphalt concrete mixtures manufactured with AP-3 and all mixtures satisfied with domestic specification for motorway pavement. Therefore, it is proved that the color bituminous concrete used this study can be applied for motorway pavement.

  • Nowadays blending ratio of OMG (old magazine) in recovered paper used for manufacturing newspaper have been increased. When large amount of OMG is consumed in newsprint mill, brightness can be improved by inorganic pigments of coating layer. On the other hand decrease in yield of deinking process will be encountered because the pigments can be removed as reject of froth flotation process. Therefore selection of the optimal deinking agent is an important. Non-ionic surfactant have been used widely in newsprint mill. Non-ionic surfactant has amphoteric characteristics. Hydrophilic group is ethylene and propylene oxide that can induce hydrogen bonding with water molecules. In this regard, cloud point is an important parameter in order to control efficiency of deinking process because hydration of the hydrophobic group can be varied according to temperature of a system. In this study, deinking properties of ONP at high blending ratio of OMG was analyzed according to cloud points of non-ionic surfactants. $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$, brightness and effective residual ink concentration did not affected by the change of cloud points. Especially, flotation reject decreased significantly according to increase in cloud point of the non-ionic surfactant. Consequently, when a nonionic surfactant having a cloud point higher than the temperature of the system is used, properties of the deinked pulp can be maintained and yield of deinking process can be improved.

  • Cellulose insulation is primarily manufactured from recycled newsprint and treated with fire retardants for the fire resistance. Thanks to the fire retardants, it is not combustible and flammable. In addition to that, Its thermal resistance is much better than that of fiberglass or rock wool. It is made from waste paper and easily decayed when it is demolished, and it has small embodied energy. So it is very environment-friendly building material. For broader use of cellulose insulation in buildings in Korea, it is necessary to test its physical performance to compare the results with the requirements on the Korean Building Code. To this end, apparent thermal conductivity (ka) measurements of Korean-made loose-fill cellulose insulations were recently completed using equipment that was built and operated in accordance with ASTM C 518 and the fire resistance was tested in accordance with ASTM C 1485. Korean loose-fill cellulose has thermal conductivity about 5% greater than the corresponding U.S. product at the same density. This is likely due to differences in the recycled material being used. Both spray-applied and loose-fill cellulose insulation lose about 1.5% of their thermal resistivity for $5.5^{\circ}C$ increase in temperature. The fire resistance of cellulose insulation is increased in linear proportion to the increase of the rate of fire retardant. Thanks to the high fire resistance, cellulose insulation can be used as a substitution of Styrofoam or Urethane foam which is combustible. The thermal conductivity of cellulose insulation was $0.037-0.043W/m{\cdot}K$ at the mean specimen temperature from $4-43^{\circ}C$. It corresponds to the thermal resistance of "Na Grade" according to the Korean Building Code. The effect of chemical content on thermal conductivity was negligible for all but the chemical-free specimen which had the highest value for the thermal conductivity over the temperature range tested. The thermal resistance of cellulose insulation is better than that of fiberglass or rock wool, and its fire resistance is higher than that of Styrofoam or Urethane foam. Therefore it can be substituted for those above considering its physical performance. Cellulose insulation is no more expensive than Styrofoam or rock wool, so it is recommended to use it more widely in Korea.
