Adsorption Thermodynamics, Kinetics and Isosteric Heat of Adsorption of Rhodamin-B onto Granular Activated Carbon (입상 활성탄에 의한 Rhodamin-B의 흡착 열역학, 동력학 및 등량 흡착열에 관한 연구)

  • The adsorption of Rhodamine-B dye using granular activated carbon from aqueous solution was investigated. Adsorption experiments were carried out as a function of the adsorbent dose, pH initial concentration, contact time and temperature. The equilibrium adsorption data showed a good fit to Langmuir isotherm model. Based on the estimated Langmuir separation factor ($R_L$ = 0.0164~0.0314), our adsorption process could be employed as an effective treatment method. The kinetics of adsorption followed the pseudo first order model. Also, the negative values of Gibbs free energy (-4.51~-13.44 kJ/mol) and positive enthalpy (128.97 kJ/mol) indicated that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic process. The isosteric heat of adsorption increased with increase in the surface loading indicating lateral interactions between the adsorbed dye molecules.

  • Rheological properties of gelatinized chestnut starch solution were investigated with a narrow gap rotational viscometer. The starch solutions at 1.2-1.8% concentration showed pseudoplastic behaviour with yield stress. At higher concentrations (1.65 and 1.8%), the starch solution showed more pseudoplastic tendency and time-dependent characteristics. Values of yield stress were small and independent of concentrations 1.2, 1.35 and 1.5%. Significant increase of yield stress was observed at 1.65% concentration. Consistency index was exponentially dependent on concentration and temperature. The activation energy for 1.65% starch solution was about 5 Kcal/g.mol.

Kinetic Studies on Hydration of Akibare and Milyang 23 Brown Rice (아끼바레와 밀양 23호 현미의 수화속도)

  • Kinetics of water diffusion during soaking of two brown rice varieties, Akibare (traditional rice) and Milyang 23 (high-yielding rice), were studied. Brown rice reached at the equilibrium moisture content after 18 hours. The absorption of liquid water by brown rice grain was directly proportional to the square root of hydration time and could be described by the simplified solution of Fick's diffusion equation. The diffusion coefficient was given by the Arrhenius relation: $D\;=\;2.738{\time}10^{-1}\;exp\;(-9,300/RT)$ for Akibare and $D\;=\;4.302{\time}10^{-1}\;exp\;(-9,500/RT)$ for Milyang 23. Hydration rate calculated from hardness change followed the equation of a first order reaction. Hydration mechanism of brown rice was changed at the gelatinization temperature of rice starch.

  • The absorption capacity and initial absorption rate in 5 %, 10%, 15 % and 20% $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ under the constant temperature at $40^{\circ}C$ and the initial absorption rate in mixture of different alkaline salts such as $KHCO_3$, $CaCO_3$ and $K_{2}CO_{3}$ were measured using batch type stirred cell contractor. 10% $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ showed the highest absorption capacity and $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ and $K_{2}CO_{3}$ showed the somewhat increased absorption capacity and initial absorption rate respectively. Further more, we have studied the effect of adding Pz and Pp to $Na_{2}CO_{3}$. The result showed that absorption rate of $CO_2$ was increased by adding these additives.

  • A study on the behavior of boron extraction by TMPD(2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol) was carried out to find the optimum conditions for the boron extraction from brine. In case of boron extraction from 0.736 g/L boron-containing brine, typical optimum extractive conditions would be confirmed to be 0.75 mol/L of extractant concentration at 3.0 pH of brine with 1 of phase ratio and 20 min. of shaking time at 298 K respectively. And 1 mol/L sodium hydroxide of stripping agent was shown above 99 % of boron extraction and stripping efficiencies. Also, extraction equilibrium equation were obtained through experiments as follows : log D = 1.7 log $[TMPD]_O$ + constant at pH < 6.

  • 해안 대수층은 해수와 담수가 공존하는 지역으로 상대적으로 밀도가 큰 해수가 대수층의 담수 아래에 쐐기형태로 존재하게 된다. 이러한 쐐기형태의 해수와 담수의 경계면은 압력경도의 평형에 의해 경계면이 유지되며, 해수면 또는 지하수위가 변동할 경우 해수-담수 경계면의 균형이 무너짐과 더불어 압력경도의 평행이 이루어질 때 까지 해수-담수 경계면의 이동이 계속 진행된다. 수위 변화의 주요 원인으로는 지구온난화 및 기후변화로 인한 지속적인 해수면 상승과 도서지역의 인구증가 및 산업화로 인한 무분별한 지하수의 사용 등에 의한 지하수위 저하 등을 꼽을 수 있다. 이와 같은 원인으로 해안 및 도서지역에서는 해안 대수층의 해수침투거리가 증가하여 지하수 이용에 큰 어려움을 겪고 있다. 이에 해안 대수층의 해수침투 범위 및 거리를 추정하기 위한 많은 연구들이 다양한 분야에서 지속해서 이루어지고 있지만, 서로 밀도가 다른 해수와 담수가 공존하는 해안 대수층 내의 수리특성을 명확히 파악하기에는 아직까지 미흡한 점들이 많다. 과거에는 Darcy의 법칙 및 Ghyben-Herzberg 식에 근거한 이론적인 연구들이 주로 이루어졌고, 근래에 현장관측이나 수리모형실험이 국내 외적으로 수행되고 있으나, 모든 영역의 지하수의 특성을 조사하는 것이 사실상 불가능하다. 이에 최근에는 컴퓨터 성능의 비약적인 발전과 더불어 다양한 수치해석방법에 의한 수치모델들이 개발되어 시뮬레이션에 적용되고 있다. 하지만 거의 대부분의 수치모델은 해안 대수층 수리특성을 투수계수에 의존하고 있을 뿐, 대수층 내부의 해수-담수에 의한 밀도류의 유동특성을 전혀 고려하지 못한 채 정수압에 근거한 해수-담수 경계면에 대해 모의하고 있는 정도이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 해안 대수층 내부의 유동현상을 투수계수에 의존하는 방법에서 탈피하여 대수층 매체의 입경, 공극, 형상 등을 고려할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 염분 및 온도차에 의한 밀도류를 해석할 수 있는 강비선형 수치모델을 개발하여 해수침투 현상을 직접 모의한다. 나아가 대부분의 이전 연구들에서 간과하고 있는 해안지역의 대표적 물리력인 파랑과 조석의 영향이 해안 대수층의 해수침투에 미치는 영향, 해안 대수층의 지하수위 및 해수면의 수위차에 의한 해수침투 특성 그리고 이를 제어 할 수 있는 새로운 대응기술을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다.

  • Water vapor transmission was tested in water bath controlled by $20^{\cire}C$, 90%RH for T800/AD6005 based composite motor case which made by filament winding method. We detected internal relative humidity of composite motor case by inserting the humidity detector through the head of motor case for the study of humidity transmission through the wall of composite motor case. We found out that this composite material appears the water vapor flux of 2.88${\times}$$10^{-9}$g/$\textrm{m}^2$sec and diffusivity of 7.98${\times}$$10^{-7}$$\textrm{mm}^2$/sec at $20^{\cire}C$, 90%RH water vapor condition.

  • For the evaluation of the corrosion behavior of the aluminum cladding in the KMRR(Korea Multipurpose Research Reactor) fuel, a modified Griess correlation was derived by introducing a heat flux factor derived from the comparison of the measured in-reactor corrosion data with the prediction of the Griess correlation. As a design criterion on the corrosion to maintain the KMRR fuel integrity, prevention of the oxide spallation was conservatively selected, which is conservatively assumed to occur when the temperature difference across the oxide layer exceeds 114$^{\circ}C$. A bounding power history of the KMRR fuel was determined by examining all the power histories of the KMRR fuel from cycle 1 to equilibrium cycle, and used to predict the maximum possible corrosion. Results of the corrosion prediction of the KMRR fuel with the bounding power history showed that the maximum local thickness of the oxide layer would be below 50$\mu$m and the design criterion on the oxide spallation would be satisfied with a factor of two margin. Therefore, it can be said that corrosion of the cladding will not impair the integrity of the KMRR fuel. Nevertheless, the applicability of the modified Griess correlation to the KMRR needs to be further verified through the KMRR fuel corrosion surveillance.

  • A program for analyzing the transient behaviors of industrial gas turbines was developed. Each component (compressor, combustor, turbine and ducts)of gas turbine is modeled as a fully module to enhance the expandability of the program. We used object-oriented programing for this purpose. The mass and energy balance equations are solved numerically by Multivariable Newton Raphson method. The characteristic maps for the compressor and turbine were used for predicting the performance of a gas turbine engine. Combustion in the combustor is assumed to be complete combustion. PID control is used to maintain constant rotational speed and turbine exhaust temperature by the control of the fuel flow rate and the changing of the compressor inlet guide vane angle at the same time. It was confirmed that stable control of the gas turbine was possible, even for a rapid load change.

Removal of Quinoline Yellow by Granular Activated Carbon (입상 활성탄에 의한 Quinoline Yellow의 제거)

  • The adsorption characteristics of quinoline yellow by granular activated carbon were investigated experimently in the batch adsorber and packed column. The adsorptivity of activated carbon for quinoline yellow were largely improved by acidic pH and higher temperature. When the pH was 3 at $60^{\circ}C$, quinoline yellowcould be removed 97 percent of initial concentration(10 mg/L). It was estabilished that the adsorption equilibrium of quinoline yellow on granular activated carbon was successfully fitted by Freundlich isotherm equation in the temperature range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$. The estimated values of k and ${\beta}$ are 38.71~166.60, 0.380~0.490, respectively. The breakthrough curve of activated carbon-packed column depends on the design variables such as initial concentration, bed height, and flow rate.
