  • A parallel crack in bonded dissimilar orthotropic planes under out-of-plane loading is analyzed. The problem is formulated by Fourier integral transforms, and reduced to a pair of dual integral equations. By solving the integral equations, the asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are determined in closed form, from which the stress intensity factor and energy release rate are obtained. Discontinuity in the stress intensity factor as the distance ratio h/a of the parallel crack approaches zero is found, while the energy releas rate is shown to be continuous at h/a = 0. This information can immediately be used to generate the stress intensity factor for the parallel crack near the interface. By employing "the maximum energy release rate criterion", it could be shown in the case of no existing crack initially that the parallel crack is formed far from the interface for the more compliant material, while it is formed close to the interface for the stiffer material. material.

  • A warpage analysis program has been developed for fiber-reinforced injection molded parts. The warpage is predicted from the residual stress and anisotropic thermo-mechanical properties coupled with fiber orientation in the integrated injection molding simulation. A simple elastic model is used for the calculation of thermally and pressure-induced residual stresses which are employed as the initial conditions in the structural analysis. To improve the reliability of warpage analysis, a new triangular flat shell element superimposing well-known efficient plate bending and membrane element is presented. The numerical examples address the necessity to use anisotropic models for fiber-reinforced materials and show that predicted warpage is in good agreement with experimentally measured one.

  • The planar anisotropic FEM analysis for predicting the earing profiles and draw-in amounts in the deep-drawing processes is introduced. An implicit, incremental, updated Lagrangian formulation with a rigid-viscoplastic constitutive equation is employed. Contact and friction are considered through the mesh-based unit vectors and the normal contact pressure. the consistent full set of governing relations, comprising equilibrium and geometric constraint equations, is appropriately linearized. Barlat's strain-rate potential is employed, whose in-plane anisotropic properties are taken into account with anisotropic coefficients and potential parameter. The linear triangular membrane elements are used for depicting the formed sheet. with the numerical simulations of deep drawing processes of flat-top cylindrical cup for the 2090-T3 aluminum effects on the earing behavior are examined. Earing predictions made for the 2090-T3 aluminum alloy sheet show good agreement with experiments, although some discrepancies were observed in the directional trend of cup height and thickness strains.

  • Effective material properties of active fiber composites with interdigitated electrodes are derived as a function of the fiber volume fraction. For the purpose of applying the rule of mixture, three unit cell models are introduced; each for the deformation and stress continuities in the out of plane and in-plane directions, and the continuity of the electrical displacement in the longitudinal direction. Derived effective material properties are compared with the results by the finite element method; good agreements are observed between them. As an application, the electromechanical behavior of the angle ply laminates with the active fiber layers bonded on the top and bottom surfaces are investigated; the angle of piezoelectric fiber to maximize the twisting curvature is obtained using the present model.

  • This study investigates the stress distribution in a transversely isotropic medium containing a spheroidal cavity where the medium is under uniaxial tension in z-direction in one case and pure shear in the plane of isotropy in another case. The technical approach used in this study combines exact analytical and numerical methods. The exact analytical method is based upon three potential functions taken in terms of the Legendre associated functions of the first and second kind. The numerical method is based upon the finite difference approach. Numerical results concerning the two loading conditions with five anisotropic materials are presented.

  • The purpose of this study is to apply the zone method expressions for a gray, absorbing, emitting, and linearly anisotropic scattering medium enclosed in an infinite plane layer to evaluate heat transfer applications. The medium is assumed to be homogeneous and has a refractive index of unity. The boundary surfaces are opaque and gray, diffusely emitting and reflecting at a constant temperature. Radiative equilibrium condition, combined conductive and radiative heat transfer, and thermal ignition are studied in terms of the governing parameters, and the results are compared with previous studies. Wall heat flux results agree well with those of others. Except for the minor discrepancies observed for some cases, temperature results also agree well with those of previous studies. Good agreement with results from other methods indicates the accuracy of the zone method as well as its compatibility with other modes of heat transfer.

  • An improved analysis model for material nonlinearity induced by elasto-plastic deformation and damage including large strain response was proposed. The elasto-plastic-damage constitutive model based on the continuum damage mechanics approach was adopted to overcome limitations of the conventional plastic theory, which can manage the anisotropic tonsorial damages evolved during time-independent plastic deformation process of materials. Updated Lagrangian finite element formulation for elasto-plastic damage coupling problem including large deformation, large rotation and large strain problems was completed to develop a numerical model which can predict all kinds of structural nonlinearities and damage rationally. Finally, a finite element analysis code for the 2-dimensional plane problem was developed and the applicability and validity of the numerical model was investigated through some numerial examples. Calculations showed reasonable results in both geometrical nonlinear problem due to large deformation and material nonlinearity including the damage effect.

  • Elastic constants were measured for 70 samples of transversely isotropic banded gneiss from the Onyang region. Anisotropic angles of samples are $0^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$. Exact values of $E_2$ and ${\nu}_{21}$ can be measured from samples with anisotropic angles of $0^{\circ}$ and those of $E_1$ and ${\nu}_{12}$ from samples with anisotropic angles of $90^{\circ}$. These values are set as reference values. Elastic constants measured from samples with anisotropic angles of $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, and $75^{\circ}$, using the methods proposed by Jang et al. (2001) and Park et al. (2008), are compared with the reference values to examine the effectiveness of the two methods. $E_1$ were measured correctly from samples with anisotropic angles of $60^{\circ}$ and $75^{\circ}$, and $E_2$ from samples with anisotropic angles of $15^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, when using the method suggested by Jang et al. (2001). $E_1$ were measured correctly from samples with anisotropic angles of $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$, and $E_2$ from samples with anisotropic angles of $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, and $60^{\circ}$, when using the method proposed by Park et al. (2008). The effectiveness of the two methods was determined by error rates between exact values and measured values. The effectiveness of the two methods was similar. However, the method suggested by Jang et al. (2001) may be more effective in measuring $E_1$, while the method suggested by Park et al. (2008) may be more effective in measuring $E_2$.
