Gender differences in Korean elementary students: An analysis of TIMSS 2011 and 2015 fourth grade mathematics assessment (한국 초등학생들의 성차: TIMSS 2011 2015 수학 학업성취도 평가를 통한 분석)

  • This study examined Korean fourth-grade students' performance by gender on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study(TIMSS) 2011 and 2015 mathematics assessment. We first identified items which had significantly higher mean scores by gender to decide which gender did better on a certain domain(domain-level analysis). Then, we examined the content of items(item-level analysis) to understand which items lead to gender differences in mathematics achievement. Our findings showed that about 80% of the items on both assessments did not show statistically significant differences between males and females. However, there were meaningful gender differences in the other 20% items. On both assessments, females had more items with significantly higher mean scores than males on the Shapes domain, and males had more those items on the Numbers and Measurement domains and all cognitive domains(Knowing, Applying, and Reasoning). In particular, females outperformed males on items related to identifying two- and three-dimensional shapes and drawing lines and angles and identifying them. Conversely, males had higher performance than females on items related to the pre-algebraic thinking, fractions and decimals, estimation of number differences, unit of length, and measuring time, height, and volume. The effect sizes for each item ranged from .12 to .33 and the mean effect size of all items across both assessments was .20, which indicated significant gender differences but small.

Automatic Face Region Detection and Tracking for Robustness in Rotation using the Estimation Function (평가 함수를 사용하여 회전에 강건한 자동 얼굴 영역 검출과 추적)

  • In this paper, we proposed automatic face detection and tracking which is robustness in rotation. To detect a face image in complicated background and various illuminating conditions, we used face skin color detection. we used Harris corner detector for extract facial feature points. After that, we need to track these feature points. In traditional method, Lucas-Kanade feature tracker doesn't delete useless feature points by occlusion in current scene (face rotation or out of camera). So we proposed the estimation function, which delete useless feature points. The method of delete useless feature points is estimation value at each pyramidal level. When the face was occlusion, we deleted these feature points. This can be robustness to face rotation and out of camera. In experimental results, we assess that using estimation function is better than traditional feature tracker.

High Resolution Satellite Image Segmentation Algorithm Development Using Seed-based region growing (시드 기반 영역확장기법을 이용한 고해상도 위성영상 분할기법 개발)

  • Image segmentation technique is becoming increasingly important in the field of remote sensing image analysis in areas such as object oriented image classification to extract object regions of interest within images. This paper presents a new method for image segmentation in High Resolution Remote Sensing Image based on Improved Seeded Region Growing (ISRG) and Region merging. Firstly, multi-spectral edge detection was done using an entropy operator in pan-sharpened QuickBird imagery. Then, the initial seeds were automatically selected from the obtained multi-spectral edge map. After automatic selection of significant seeds, an initial segmentation was achieved by applying ISRG to consider spectral and edge information. Finally the region merging process, integrating region texture and spectral information, was carried out to get the final segmentation result. The accuracy assesment was done using the unsupervised objective evaluation method for evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method has good potential for application in the segmentation of high resolution satellite images.

Transformer Network for Container's BIC-code Recognition (컨테이너 BIC-code 인식을 위한 Transformer Network)

  • This paper presents a pre-processing method to facilitate the container's BIC-code recognition. We propose a network that can find ROI(Region Of Interests) containing a BIC-code region and estimate a homography matrix for warping. Taking the structure of STN(Spatial Transformer Networks), the proposed network consists of next 3 steps, ROI detection, homography matrix estimation, and warping using the homography estimated in the previous step. It contributes to improving the accuracy of BIC-code recognition by estimating ROI and matrix using the proposed network and correcting perspective distortion of ROI using the estimated matrix. For performance evaluation, five evaluators evaluated the output image as a perfect score of 5 and received an average of 4.25 points, and when visually checked, 224 out of 312 photos are accurately and perfectly corrected, containing ROI.

  • This dissertation was aimed at finding an implication of selecting and educating the gifted of information science discovering features of gifted learner in the field of math and science and the gifted of information science through comparative analysis of observing evaluation for the gifted of information science. Subjects of the study are foundation course learners of University Science Education Institute for the Gifted in the field of physics, earth science, math, information science. We have compared the features of learners of each field through one-way ANOVA about an observing evaluation for one year. In consequence, information science learners showed mostly different features from physics and earth science learners in details of an attitude area and a problem solving area. And an analysis of each subject of information science learners showed that the test of attitude area in the fields of math and information was relatively superior to that of science. On this, the researcher concluded that there must be features of the gifted on information science and their difference from gifted learners in math and science was caused by learner levels and features of each field. Based on the result of this study, we expect that we can imply it to selecting and educating the gifted of information science.

  • CRESST(the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing at UCLA) is now carrying out the research, which was scheduled for a five year period from 2007 to 2011. This research aimed at testing the effectiveness of the formative assessment program by continuously conducting the program on the target group and steadily applying the recurring feedback, in order to reform the teachers' teaching and to facilitate students' learning. To do this, CRESST has set out to develop the material for 7th graders since January 2007, and KICE(Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation) have been running a collaborated research since July 2007, while sharing the instructional materials developed by CRESST. In 2008, the pre-test was conducted prior to this study in 2009. Especially, this paper deals with the Korean 8th graders' scholastic achievements in algebra domain measured by PowerSource(c). In addition, this study would examine the responses of teachers and students on its application.

Difference in Results according to Scorer and Test Date in Clinical Practice Test (진료수행 시험에서 채점자 및 시험 일자에 따른 결과 차이)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the difference between the scoring results by scorer(doctors and standardization patients) and examination dates. A total of 101 students in the fourth grade of medical school participated in four clinical practice test. Students were randomly assigned to either day-1 or day-2, which was consisted of a standardized patient scoring set or a physician scoring set. Station checklists consisted of history taking, physical examination, patient education, physician-patient relationship and clinical courtesy. The achievement scores of each case and each domain were converted to the standard score, and the differences between groups were compared. Female students' achievement scores were significantly higher than male students' achievement scores in all domains. There was no significant difference between means by the standardized patients' group and doctors group. Day-2 group was significantly higher than day-1 group in both of history taking and physical examination domains. If the principles of checklist are clearly defined, the scorer status (either physician or standardized patients) does not determine the difference of students' practice test scores.

Usability and Accessibility Evaluation of South Korean and American Health-Related Websites for the Elderly (노인들을 위한 건강관련 웹사이트의 사용성과 접근성 평가)

  • 연구목적: 노인을 위한 건강정보 웹사이트들이 사용성과 접근성을 높이기 위해 지켜야 할 디자인 요소를 어떻게 반영하고 있는지 평가·비교함으로써 개선 방향을 제언하고자 하였다. 연구방법: 국내 및 미국에서 개발된 노인 대상의 건강정보 웹사이트를 각각 9개씩 선정하였다. 근거 기반의 웹디자인 지침서인 Make Your Website Senior Friendly: Checklist와 Research-based Web Design & Usability Guideline을 통합 수정하여 얻은 4개 영역의 평가 항목 48개를 적용해 두 명의 평가자가 선정된 총 18개 웹사이트를 평가하였다. 연구결과: '가독성' 영역 중 서체 선택, 줄 간격, 배경색과 글자색 선택 등은 양호하였으나 국내 웹사이트들 중에는 글자 크기가 조절되지 않는 경우가 빈번하였다. '정보의 표현과 구성' 영역에서 다수의 웹사이트들은 정보 배치 등이 우수하고 소비자 용어를 사용하는 노력을 보였다. 그러나 일부 국내 웹사이트들은 프린트 기능을 제공하지 않거나, 노인들의 저하된 인지 능력을 배려하려는 노력이 부족하였다. '미디어 사용' 영역에서 국내 웹사이트들은 글자 외에 다른 매체를 사용하는 빈도가 미국 웹사이트들에 비해 낮았고, 시청각 매체를 사용할 때는 동일한 내용을 문자로도 볼 수 있도록 하라는 권고안을 준수하지 않았다. '내비게이션과 검색의 용이성'에서는 메뉴나 링크의 명칭이 명확하며, 이용 중에도 쉽게 홈페이지로 돌아갈 수 있도록 구성되었다. 그러나 다수의 국내 사이트들이 사이트맵을 제공하지 않거나, 검색어의 철자오류 등에 대한 배려가 부족하였다. 결론: 국내 웹사이트들은 미국 웹사이트들에 비해 노인들의 사용성과 접근성을 높이는 것으로 밝혀진 연구 근거들을 제대로 반영하지 못하고 있었다. 노인 대상의 인터넷과 웹을 활용한 교육이 지속적으로 증가할 것이므로, 그 효과성을 높이기 위해 간호사들은 정보의 질 뿐만 아니라 디자인 측면의 중요성을 인식하고 실천할 수 있어야겠다.

통계모형의 전문스포츠 현장 적용 사례

  • 스포츠 통계와 관련된 주제들은 경기결과의 설명 예측력 분석, 선수와 팀 평가, 경기내용의 요약, 경기의 환경적 요인 평가, 경기 규칙 분석, 경기결과의 시각적 표현, 토너먼트 구조 연구 등의 영역으로 다양하다. 이 글에서는 야구 축구 농구 테니스 종목을 중심으로 통계적 방법을 적용하여 스포츠 현장의 문제를 어떻게 접근하고 있는지를 개괄하였다. 전통적으로 스포츠 통계는 선수와 팀 그리고 전략의 평가가 주를 이루었지만, 오늘날 스포츠통계는 경기의 잠재적, 외적 요인 등의 주제로 관심영역을 넓혀가고 있다. 그러나 국내에서는 경기내용의 기술적(descriptive) 분석이 주류를 이루고 있으며, 전문적 수준의 통계적 접근은 활발하지 못하고 있다. 현장과 자료의 특성을 고려하여 통계와 스포츠(체육)분야의 다양한 협동연구가 필요하다.

자격검정제도의 제안

  • 한국주거학회 자격관리위원회는 자격검증을 위한 과목 선정을 위해 다수의 검정과목안의 장단점을 비교 분석하고, 국내 12개 주거학과의 의견조회 결과를 참고로 하여, 현행 주거학과의 교과과정을 잘 포괄하고 있고 직무영역의 능력을 균형적으로 평가할 수 있는 (가칭)2급 주택사 검정과목(안)과 직무영역의 평가가 강화된 (가칭)1급 주택사 검정과목을 제안하였다. (가칭)주택사는 설정된 검정과목에 따라 2급 주택사의 검정방법은 1차, 2차로 구분하여 실시하고 1차는 기본 지식 및 이론을 평가하는 객관식 시험형태를, 2차는 실무능력을 평가하는객/주관식 혼용의 시험형태를 제안하였다. 1급 주택사는 1차에 한하며 실무의 전문성을 평가하기 위한 논술형을 시험형태로 하였다. 또한 응시자격은 국가기술자격법 시행령 제 21조 제1항과 관련하여 2급의 경우 "기사"등급에, 1급의 경우 "기술사" 등급에 해당하는 자격을 기준으로 제안하였다.
