  • Since the expansion of perlite occurs in a few second in high temperature, it is difficult to identify an expansion phenomenon through experiments. In order to explain this phenomenon, a numerical study has been carried out by setting a model that water vapour diffuses to a tiny bubble existing in perlite melts and then makes the bubble grow and perlite expand. When the bubble grew and the perlite expanded due to the diffusion of water vapour, the dynamic temperature of perlite decreased. Meanwhile, the dynamic pressure of bubble increased at the beginning as water vapour diffuses in melts, but rather decreased after a rapid expansion of bubble.

  • This paper was performed to evaluate the properties of no-coarse lightweight concrete using perlite and expanded polystyrene bead on fine aggregate. The results were shown that w/c and unit weight was affected by absorption ratio and unit weight of using aggregate itself. The compressive strength of no-coarse lightweight concrete was showed $187kgf/cm^2$ by using natural sand, $170kgf/cm^2$ by using perlite. Tensile and bending strength were showed the same tendency of compressive strength, but when expanded polystyrene bead concrete dose not have strength nearly. The pulse velocity and static modulus of elasticity of no-coarse lightweight concrete were smaller than that of normal cement concrete. And stress-strain curves were shown that was increased with increase of stress, and when the stress-strain curve using expanded polystyrene bead was repeated at short intervals increase and decrease irregularly.

  • To verify model adaptation and flexibility, non-isothermal simulation for perlite expansion has been carried out. Temperature-dependent perlite properties are applied to energy equations for bubble temperature change and perlite melt temperature gradient. Bubble temperature is changed with volume change, water evaporation, and heat flux from melt. Temperature gradient of perlite melt is affected by decreasing bubble temperature. As a result, prediction model and code have been developed below 1100 K with 5% accuracy. At 1100~1400 K, lower 7% accuracy has been obtained from the calculation results.

  • With the aiming to improve the comprehension of an expansion process of perlite, a numerical study has been carried out, concerning a water vapor bubble growth in a softened perlite melt. Isothermal case of the model is investigated and compared with the experimental results. Water content is an intrinsic parameter in a perlite expansion. With increasing water content, the expansion time is faster. But it can not be changed easily in an industrial process. Initial temperature is a changeable parameter in an industrial process. Higher initial temperature hastens the expansion time and this can be a key parameter in an industrial process. Experimental results are observed by SEM. Increasing initial temperature, perlite shape becomes close to sphere. Calculated bubble growth results are compared with experimental results. Packing density is measured and compared with simulated results. These results indicate that some other factors are applied on the model during heat transformation to work.

  • High strength concrete is the occurrence of explosive spalling associated with high temperature such as a fire. The spalling causes the sever reduction of the cross sectional area with the exposure of the reinforcing steel, which originates a problem in the structural behaviour. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties of lightweight mortar using perlite and polypropylene fiber for fire protection covering material. For this purpose, selected test variables were the ratio of water to cement, the ratio of cement to perlite, contents of polypropylene fiber. As a result of this study, it has been found that addition of perlite and polypropylene fiber to mortar modifies its pore structure and reduces its density. And it has been found that a new lightweight mortar can be used in the fire protection covering material.

  • The viability of rhizobia according to various kinds of carrier materials, inoculum size, storage temperature and sterilization methods was investigated for the development of legume inoculat. The results were followings. 1. Peat and perlite were favorable as a carrier material. 2. Rhizobia counts were reached to $5{\times}10^8cells/g$ carrier 1-2 weeks after inoculation with inoculum size below $10^4cells/g$ carrier. 3. $10^9cells/g$ carrier was maintained 12 weeks after storage at room temperature. 4. Steam heat sterilization was the best method for carrier sterilization among methods used in this study. Dry heat and ${\gamma}$-ray sterilization were also applicable.

  • The magnetization directions of a polar anisotropic ferrite-bonded magnet are analyzed by finite element method (FEM). The influence of the width of Sm-Co magnets for magnetic field generation is investigated. The surface flux densities of the polar anisotropic magnets are analyzed and compared according to the pole number and thickness of the magnets. And the electromotive force (EMF) values of brushless DC motors with the magnets are investigated.
