High adaptability and scalability are two critical issues in implementing a very complex system in a single chip. To obtain high adaptability and scalability, novel system design methodology known as communication-based system design has gained large attention from SoC designers. NoC (Network-on-Chip) is such an on-chip communication-based design approach for the next generation SoC design. To provide high adaptability and scalability, NoCs employ network interfaces and routers as their main communication structures and transmit and receive packetized data over such structures. However, data packetization, and routing overhead in terms of run time and area may cost too much compared with conventional SoC communication structure. Therefore, in this research, we propose a novel methodology which automatically generates a hybrid communication structure. In this work, we map traditional pin-to-pin wiring structure for frequent and timing critical communication, and map flexible and scalable structure for infrequent, or highly variable communication patterns. Even though, we simplify the communication structure significantly through our algorithm the connectivity or the scalability of the communication modules are almost maintained as the original NoC design. Using this method, we could improve the timing performance by 49.19%, and the area taken by the communication structure has been reduced by 24.03%.
As with appearing new applications that requires QoS guarantee such as VoIP, VPN in Internet, problems of IP QoS has been one of most important issues in next-generation Internet. IETF has proposed integrated services model(Int-Serv) and differentiated service(Diff-Serv) to supply IP QoS in Internet. Int-Serv model uses the state information of each IP flow, so satisfies QoS according to traffic characteristics, but increases the amount of flow state information with increasing flow number. Diff-Serv model uses PHP(Per Hop Behavior), and there are well-defined classes to provide differentiated traffics with different services according to delay and loss sensitivity. Diff-Serv model can provide diverse services in Internet because of having no the state and signal information of each flow. As MPLS uses the packet forwarding technique based-on label, it implements the traffic engineering in the networks easily. The MPLS can set up the path with different traffic parameters, and assign each path to particular Class of Services. Therefore it is possible to support the Diff-Serv model with well-defined classes. In this paper we investigate the performance improvement of Diff-Serv function in the MPLS network to guarantee class of services in Internet.

Due to the movement of nodes, ad-hoc networks suffer from the problems such as the decrease of data delivery ratio, the increase of end-to-end delay, and the increase of routing overhead. The backup routing schemes try to solve these problems by finding the backup routes during the route discovery phase and using them when a route fails. Generally the backup routing schemes outperform the single-path routing schemes in terms of data delivery ratio, end-to-end delay, and routing overhead when the nodes move rapidly. But when the nodes don't move rapidly, the backup routing schemes generate more routing traffics than the single-path routing schemes because they need to exchange packets to find the backup route. In addition, when the backup route fails earlier than the main route, it can not use the backup route because in many backup route algorithms, the backup route is found only at the initial route discovery phase. RBR(Reactive Backup Routing Algorithm) proposed in this paper is an algorithm that provides more stable data delivery than the previous backup routing schemes through the selective maintenance of backup route and the backup route rediscovery. To do that RBR prioritize the backup routes, and maintain and use them selectively Thus it can also decrease the routing overheads. Also, RBR can increase data delivery ratio and decrease delay because it reestablishes the backup route when the network topology changes. For the performance evaluation, OPNET simulator is used to compare RBR with the single-path routing scheme and some of the well known backup routing schemes.

Most of the previous mobility management protocols such as IETF MIPv4/6 and its variants standardized by the IETF do not support global seamless handover because they require partially changes of the existing network infrastructure. In this article, we propose a simple mobility management protocol (SMMP) which can support global seamless handover between homogeneous or heterogeneous wireless networks. To do this, the SMMP employs separate location management function as DMMS to support global user and service mobility and the bidirectional tunnels are dynamically constructed to support seamless IP mobility by using the IEEE MIH extension server, which is extended the IEEE 802.21 MIH standards. The detailed architecture and functions of the SMMP have been designed. Finally, the mathematical analysis and the simulation have been done. The performance results show the proposed SMMP outperforms the existing MIPv6 and HMIPv6 in terms of handover latency, packet loss, pear signal noise ratio (PSNR).

As the demand for ubiquitous mobile wireless Internet grows, vehicles are receiving a lot of attention as new networking platforms. The demand for 4G all-IP networks encourages vehicle networks to be connected using IPv6. By means of network mobility (NEMO) support, we can connect sensors, controllers, local ,servers as well as passengers' devices of a vehicle to the Internet through a mobile router. The mobile router provides the connectivity to the Internet and mobility transparency for the rest of the mobile nodes of an in-vehicle nv6 network. So, it is .important for the mobile router to assure reliable connection and a sufficient data rate for the group of nodes behind it. To provide reliability, this paper proposes an adaptive multihoming architecture of multiple mobile routers. Proposed architecture makes use of different mobility characteristics of different vehicles. Simulation results with different configurations show that the proposed architecture increases session preservation thus increases reliability and reduces packet loss. We also show that the proposed architecture is adaptive to heterogeneous access environment which provide different access coverage areas and data rates. The result shows that our architecture achieves sufficient data rates as well as session preservation.

In this paper, we propose a new time synchronization algorithm using CoAP(constrained-application protocol) in sensor network environment, which handles a technique that synchronizes an explicit timestamp between sensor nodes not including an additional module for time-setting and sensor node gateway linked to internet time server. CoAP is a standard protocol for sensor data communication among sensor nodes and sensor node gateway to be built much less memory and power supply in constrained network surroundings including serious network jitter, packet losses, etc. We have supplied an exact time synchronization implementation among small and cheap IP-based sensor nodes or non-IP based sensor nodes and sensor node gateway in sensor network using CoAP message header's option extension. On behalf of conventional network time synchronization method, as our approach uses an exclusive protocol 'CoAP' in sensor network, it is not to become an additional burden for synchronization service to sensor nodes or sensor node gateway. This method has an average error about 2ms comparing to NTP service and offers a low-cost and robust network time synchronization algorithm.
The most important factor influencing the robustness of the Internet Is the end-to-end TCP congestion control. However, the congestion control scheme of TCP Reno, the most popular TCP version on the Internet, employs passive congestion indication. It makes worse the network congestion. Recently, Brakmo and Peterson have proposed a new version of TCP, which is named TCP Vegas, with a fundamentally different congestion control scheme from that of the Reno. Many studies indicate that the Vegas is able to achieve better throughput and higher stability than the Reno. But there are two unfairness problems in Vegas. These problems hinder the spread of the Vegas in current Internet. In this paper, in order to solve these unfairness problems, we propose a new congestion control algorithm called TCP PowerVegas. The existing Vegas depends mainly only on the rtt(round trip time), but the proposed PowerVegas use the new congestion control scheme combined the Information on the rtt with the information on the packet loss. Therefore the PowerVegas performs the congestion control more competitively than the Vegas. Thus, the PowerVegas is able to solve effectively these unfairness problems which the Vegas has experienced. To evaluate the proposed approach, we compare the performance among PowerVegas, Reno and Vegas under same network environment. Using simulation, the PowerVegas is able to achieve better throughput and higher stability than the Reno and is shown to achieve much better fairness than the existing Vegas.
TCP(Transmission Control Protocol) is one of the most important Internet protocols, which is widely used in wireless networks as well as wired networks. However, when TCP is deployed for wireless networks, it takes severe performance degradation because TCP was designed for wired network. To overcome this drawback, a number of TCP variants have been proposed in the literature. However, most previous schemes did not consider TCP enhancement over heterogeneous networks. In heterogeneous networks, an mobile node (MN) may move from one access network to another(i.e., vertical handover). In the case of vertical handover, an MN experiences a TCP performance degradation caused by the packet loss and the sudden change of link characteristics between two different access networks. In this work, we investigate the TCP performance degradation occurred in vortical handover across heterogeneous networks. First, we have conducted the measurement study over GPRS-WLAN testbed. In the measurement study. we observed the TCP performance degradation in the case of handover from WLAN to GPRS. In order to study more different TCP behaviors during vertical handover, we performed comprehensive simulations using a network simulator 2(ns-2). Based on measurement and simulation results, we investigated how to improve TCP performance in vertical handover and we concluded that the existing mechanisms cannot be perfect solutions and new mechanisms are strongly required.

With the advance of wireless communication technology in terrestrial area, underwater communication is also evolving very fast from a simple point-to-point transmission to an elaborate networked communications. Underwater acoustic channel has quite different features comparing with the terrestrial radio channel in terms of propagation delay, Doppler shift, multipath, and path loss. Thus, existing technologies developed for terrestrial communication might not work properly in underwater channel. Especially medium access control (MAC) protocols which highly depend on propagation phenomenon should be newly designed for underwater network. CSMA/CA has drawn lots of attention as a candidate of underwater MAC protocol, since it is able to resolve a packet collision and the hidden node problem. However, a received signal could be degraded by the interferences from the nodes locating outside the receiver's propagation radius. In this paper, we study the effects of interference on the CSMA/CA based underwater network. We derived the SNR with the interference using the sonar equation and analyzed the degradation of the RTS/CTS effects. These results are compared with the terrestrial results to understand the differences. Finally we summarized the design considerations in CSMA/CA based underwater network.

In this paper, we present a distributed fault-tolerant topology control protocol that configure a wireless sensor network to achieve k-connectivity and (k+1)-coverage. One fundamental issue in sensor networks is to maintain both sensing coverage and network connectivity in order to support different applications and environments, while some least active nodes are on duty. Topology control algorithms have been proposed to maintain network connectivity while improving energy efficiency and increasing network capacity. However, by reducing the number of links in the network, topology control algorithms actually decrease the degree of routing redundancy. Although the protocols for resolving such a problem while maintaining sensing coverage were proposed, they requires accurate location information to check the coverage, and most of active sensors in the constructed topology maintain 2k-connectivity when they keep k-coverage. We propose the fault-tolerant topology control protocol that is based on the theorem that k-connectivity implies (k+1)-coverage when the sensing range is at two times the transmission range. The proposed distributed algorithm does not need accurate location information, the complexity is O(1). We demonstrate the capability of the proposed protocol to provide guaranteed connectivity and coverage, through both geometric analysis and extensive simulation.
